E For All 2007 Editorial - PAGE 4
Gabriel Vega, Lydia Sung

Konami ran one of the hardest to enter booths at the show, by that I mean that it was insane waiting to get on what started as a 20min demo of MGS4 to around 12mins of gameplay, much of what was on display was either ready for retail or already entering the consumer market.

- Metal Gear Solid 4 - Snake returns again, although with a bit less enthusiasm than ever before into the future of warfare against liquid. Taking on a desert theme and a new console the game seeks to dazzle the eyes and produce a gameplay mechanic of suspense and action as things boil down in this last installment. In the demo for E For All they presented the english dub of apparently what they had to show at TGS, I guess for those gamers who had the money to head on out there then it may have been a letdown, for those that didn't the game was a demonstration of the CQC system, the improved threat ring the map / objective system and of course gameplay as well. Gameplay is pretty awesome in this demo, the ai is responsive not only to the routes but the overall behavior of the player, the control system is pretty smooth but I do have issues with how camera placement would behave at times, sometimes you want to hold close to a wall and not be looking directly on Snake's oldness. In those cases it took a bit of swapping around to get out of those spots but overall I would say they're onto a good push right now. The UI is coming around quite well and while there are a lot of things on screen, they're fairly well integrated to fall into the background of the game. Hopefully they keep on this development streak since it looks to be promising to the gamers when the game eventually hits retail. The VA's were clear and pretty well in character, the visuals were pretty nice as well, although given the onslaught of eyecandy going on these days it's easy to see how artistic taste will take priority over straight out realism.

- Contra 4 - The classic returns, as a fan of the series I was suprised to see the game up close and give it a good run, I loved the side scrolling series for it, the DS returns to the old days but with some updated graphics of course, unfortunately I didn't manage to get the old Konami code going but who knows, maybe it wont need it afterall. The basic gameplay is simple, advance through the system, pick up your favorite weapons and mow down everything you see without dying. The demonstration level was fast and a nice step back into casual gaming, when you could play games that take ages to work through but it didn't matter over time.

- Silent Hill Origins - There's something almost sad about the way this game is closing out, the whole last stop for Team Silent and passing of the torch to a new group. The game itself works around a lot of the elements that made Silent Hill a great series, there are some graphical traits though that really do seem to disturb the feel of the game, maybe it's the coding to the PSP that made getting the graphics right difficult or just the use of the lcd and smaller resolution. Either way the game is still eerie but the visual immersion takes me out of the game. Hopefully it was maybe just the lights and overall crowdedness of the game (the MGS line flooded straight past the kiosk).
