F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin - PAGE 4
Gabriel Vega - Friday, February 20th, 2009

F.E.A.R 2 features online modes (of course.) The modes are pretty standard in the FPS scene: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag and more are all featured in the online portion of the game.

My experiences with multiplayer were nothing to rave about. But your mileage my vary. Most games that I participated in were CTF matches, but the combination of lack of players, weapon imbalance, and some annoying game mechanics was enough to put a damper on things. For the most part my biggest gripe in multiplayer was with the weapon balance. The game maintains damage characteristics similar to single player, so although there is no one hit magic gun that obliterates the opposition, a few guns come close.

The game arranges players in balanced teams for the most part. But one problem that seems to have come up is maintaining some level of consistency within the game. Unfortunately, being dumped from the winning side to a losing side in a match was not that much fun when it happened for the 3rd or 4th time in a row. Hopefully there’s something server-side that can be adjusted to keep people playing -- instead of getting frustrated at being tossed to the losing side all the time. Not to mention that there are few options for online matchmaking at the moment.

Besides those hang-ups, once things get going there is some enjoyment to be had. The game features ranked and unranked play, for those performing ranked matches there is an ability to move forward in rank (experience levels) and of course, in achievement rewards as well. The achievements are fairly reasonable, so obtaining them shouldn’t be that tough of a job for most players.

Overall the online experience could not sufficiently be explored to come up with a final judgment for this review. This is primarily because there were too few players, and too few games, to really engage the experience properly. For what I did play, lag was non-existent for much the of my time playing online, and the experience, overall, was very fun. It should be noted however that due to the lack of players, I really only properly sampled the CTF mode properly.
