While the spells can range from structure creation to healing, by far the most powerful are the creature creation incantations. Depending on the type of creatures, they require more or less mana to create. Also, because the vessel is created, it needs one or more souls to inhabit it and give it life. Thus you cannot create creatures without having souls to inhabit them. Not to worry though, for these are war torn lands, and there are a numerous amount of souls lying around. Just as not all people are good or pure, not all souls are either. Blue souls are pure and ready for re-inhabiting a body, however red souls are the souls of the wicked and fiendish, and must be cleansed by a ritual at your altar performed by a shaman. Once the soul has been blessed by the deity at your altar, can it then be placed into a body.
Due to the fact that you yourself are very weak, it is necessary to amass quite a large fighting force as quickly as possible. Since the camera doesnt actually ever leave you, it simply rotates around and zooms in and out; it is very hard to remotely control your units. Thus what I find it easiest to do is to simply command all of your units to guard you, and in the mean time, assign them to hot keys on the keyboard. Thus when you are running around, they all automatically follow you, and when you finally find the enemy wherever he may lie, you can then tell all of your troops to attack them. You can then focus yourself on avoiding the conflict, and strategically removing elements of the enemies army.
The gods will have you perform numerous acts during your tenure with them.
They can vary greatly, however most tend to involve preventing a rival god from accomplishing a task that suits their agenda. These gods just like the one that whom you work for, have wizards to do their bidding. In order to actually kill a rival wizard, you must desecrate his altar, for like you, he will not die simply due to killing him. The gods altar keeps followers on the earth, and allow for regeneration. Thus I find it to be a good tactic to start the act of desecration, and then command your troops to focus their efforts on killing the rival wizard. If he or she is to die while their altar is being desecrated, their link to their god is severed, and the wizard will die.
When you first take a look at Sacrifice, the one thing that will strike you besides its unique look, is the fact that the graphics in the game are absolutely breathtaking. As I was playing it at my desk, passers by would actually stop and watch me play for a while, later commenting that Sacrifice had the best graphics they had ever seen in a video game.
One woman described the game as simply being beautiful, beautiful. The thing that really sticks out in my mind is just exactly how large the games world actually is. In most real time strategy games, or even third person perspective action/adventure games that utilize 3d acceleration, there is usually a finite horizon around the character that defines the limit of his vision. In order to increase frame rates and ensure that the game runs smoothly, a trick is employed which is usually refereed to as the fog of war. This gray mist surrounds the character, and limits the distance over which he or she can see. This can be very limiting and often intimidating, for in some games the fog of war prevents you from being able to adequately see enemies, or even destinations that you must reach in order to continue with the game. Occasionally, in such games as Turok 2, I would be forced to wander in this gray soup for hours, trying to find the entrance to some cave or town that was lost in the mist. With Sacrifice, no such fog exists. Instead your eyes are treated to rolling hills, jagged peaks, and cavernous valleys that can stretch for seemingly miles. The worlds are so incredibly vast that the game designers decided to help you find special places or characters. To do this, the designers created a ray of heavenly light that bursts from the sky, and encompasses a special character or area. In order to find out where you have to travel next, all you have to do is look for the spire of light in the sky.
