PS2 Do It Yourself Guide - PAGE 1
Gabriel Vega - Sunday, February 15th, 2004

Ah the Playstation 2, Sony's dream console for the time being in many countries. In others the new dream is the PSX but that's another story. The PS2 contains quite a bit of technology and for many it's a thing they don't plan to face without proper prep work. The DRE, Tray misalignments, blown powerboards are all some of the errors that people encounter with the machine over time. Some of these can be repaired for a fraction of the cost that people believe it would be. I've heard quite a few questions and I've issued watered down answers but this time I'm going to go into detail and drop images along the way so that everyone can hopefully get their systems running again.

**Warning** This guide will void your warranty completely. If you value your warranty then I suggest that you seek out an authorized service center or get your console fixed by Sony. We will not be held responsible for failed repairs using this guide. You perform these actions at your own risk. If you feel uncomfortable doing so then seek out another party to service it for you. Don't come to us waving repair bills because you decided to spill alcohol on the entire laser assembly, broke a part of your tray because you wanted things out faster, went blind because you forgot to unplug the console before doing anything else, ripped your power/eject cable because of careless behavior or etc. You're doing this on your own power we're not forcing you to do anything.

Also, if you paid for this link or a copy of this info then you got ripped off. This info is free for everyone. If you want to report someone pawning this info off feel free to report them in the comments section or via email.

Sony has a massive variety of Playstation 2 consoles on the world market, often redesigns occur to the heatsink or to the drives to defeat previous problems. With this said don't expect everything you see here to mirror your console exactly.

You'll need the following tools for this whole mess so I'll list them below.

1 - #2 Philips Head Screwdriver (check the fit on the case screws)
1 - 2.0 m/m #0 Philips Head Screwdriver
1 - 1.4 m/m #0 Philips Head Screwdriver
1 - Bottle of Alcohol (preferably around 70% or so)
1 - Box of Q-Tip's for lens cleaning & drying

Optional Items:

1 - Air Duster/Dust off etc. Canned Air

**Warnings on Usage/Substitions: Canned Air is perfectly fine the way it comes. Do not shake the can or you will get a frost like spray from it which can damage components! Please be careful and use it as directed. Do not turn the can upside down or to the side as you run the risk of damaging things. Also with the cleaning solution. Lens Cleaner (specifically noted for lasers) 70% alcohol and to a limited extent 91% alcohol should work. I would recommend the first two as 91% is really harsh. Please avoid using the cleaning section of the guide if you lack these items. Wait until you purchase or can get ahold of the solution then go ahead with it. Spit, water and other things don't really do anything but smudge things around leaving a coat of whatever is in it on the lens which now has to be cleaned off.**

Alright lets get to business. I'll actually demostrate on a V0/1 (SCPH-10000,15000,18000) series console. Depending on who you talk to the version varies. I note the numbers right there so it's all out in the clear.

Flip the console over so the PS2 logo is facing down. You should see a 10 or 8 pattern of plugs which cover the screws to open up the console. Using a small flat tip screwdriver or a fingernail pull these all off and store them safely somewhere. You'll need these if you want it to look nice after you finish the dirty work inside the console. Next you'll see a bunch of philips head screws. Don't take all of these off at once. A certain pattern takes off just the top or bottom. You don't want the whole thing open to the elements. I'm going to travel from the top to the bottom. So using the #2 Philips unscrew the lower area where the Control ports, DVD Drive and powerboard reside. Also after those small screws are out you'll need to remove two long screws from the upper right area as noted in the image. This will allow that cover to be taken off. Store the screws in a safe place then flip it over holding the top onto the system securely.
