Bluetake BT500 Bluetooth Mouse - PAGE 1
Andy Zen - Monday, March 1st, 2004

Introduction

Bluetake is relatively new name on the market, having a lifespan barely as long as the lifespan of Bluetooth technology. If you take a look at their logo (pun not intended), you may be reminded of a certain company that rhymes with 'hermaltake'. Don't worry, there's no impending lawsuit building up due to copyright infringement. Bluetake is a spinoff company of Thermaltake, responsible for the manufacturing of Bluetooth devices. I mean, whoever has heard of a company responsible for addressing heat issues making Bluetooth mice?

EDIT: A coworker just made me eat my words. Here.

Today we will be reviewing one of Bluetake's new products - the BT500 Bluetooth mouse and BT009X Bluetooth adaptor combo. Bluetooth devices are slowly gaining popularity with the emergence of Bluetooth-enabled cellular phones and PDAs. With the BT500, Bluetake targets on-the-go laptop users who would appreciate the freedom of wireless connectivity without having a billion (slight exaggeration) dongles handing out of their laptop. Assuming all you have are Bluetooth-enabled devices, you should theoretically run everything off the BT009X adapter.

The Package

Looking at the box, you wonder what else they put in there, seeing as the mouse looks very small while the adaptor looks even smaller. Well, the good news first - the mouse really is that small and the adaptor really is smaller than the mouse. The bad news is, there wasn't much else in the box, minus the drivers CDs (one each for the mouse and the adaptor), the manual, and a pair of AAA Energizer batteries (brand name!).

BT009X

This dongle is multi-purpose, besides being a receiver for the mouse. It should be able to receive any Bluetooth product including cell phones (Sony Ericsson T610) and BT-enabled PDAs. It's about the size of a USB flash drive, and weighs pretty much the same too. Nothing spectacular here, that's pretty much all there is to it.

BT500

Although Bluetooth mice are not a new phenomenon, Bluetake does the smart thing and targets a completely different market. Whereas the big boys in the industry (e.g. Logitech and Microsoft) produce classy Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combos for the desktop, they are not exactly designed with the notebook user in mind (although some people would not mind carrying around a MX900).

The BT500 is TINY. Look at the pictures and see for yourself. The first photo shows the mouse on a generic Asian hand, while the second shows its size next to my Logitech MX700.

The weight of the BT500 is something to be appreciated too, weighing in at a scant 64 grams (without batteries). It's light enough to be tossed around easily when the user is bored (but is not something we suggest that you do).
