Cornerstone P1460 19" Monitor Review - PAGE 2
Ren-Jie Huang - Monday, August 13th, 2001

First Glance

At first glance, the Cornerstone p1460 appeared to be just another monitor. There just wasn’t anything differentiating it from the next monitor. However, subjective tests showed otherwise. Still pictures were surprisingly vibrant and the colours were astonishing. However the corners were slightly blurred, but this was somewhat expected due to the tube used. But, the Cornerstone p1460 does have its fair share of controls, which are cleverly hidden, that can fix otherwise visually unpleasant images. They range from brightness, contrast, position and size to more advanced controls such as pincushion, trapezoid and colour temperature. We were able to fix most problems visible straight out of the box; however, the corners were still blurry.

Under the Scope

The objective tests using DisplayMate had more to say about the shortcoming of this particular monitor. The uniformity was adequate; however, the screen was darker around the sides by about 1 cm. This problem is inherent to LCD displays but is rarely seen on CRT displays. This translates to some disappointment with the gradient. The gradient is noticeably coarse when compared to other monitors; however, its colour scale is top notch. In the sharpness and focus tests, we found that the p1460 was fairly sharp with slight blooming, but there were no signs of streaking or ghosting. The raster visibility and resolution were below average causing it to be hard to see individual lines. At full resolution, there were vertical bands present along the screen which faded towards the right. In addition, the corner resolution was not sharp and appeared fairly fuzzy. Having said all that, we were surprised to see that the colours on this monitor were extremely vibrant compared to monitors from Samsung. The images jumped off the screen, albeit slightly on the blurry side. However, the Cornerstone p1460 performed favourably in flicker, distortion, colour, and geometric linearity. All in all, it was fairly disappointing.

As for gaming, the Cornerstone p1460 performed well, given that it did beat out most other monitors with respect to colour vibrancy. Games ran smoothly and without a hitch on this monitor. However, the brightness was a little low, and increasing it produced poorly saturated images. In addition, the text was a smidge on the blurry side as our objective tests clearly showed. This monitor is highly suitable for graphic intensive games with little to no text.

Conclusion

Even though CRT technology is well established, there is still work needed on the Cornerstone p1460 before it can even touch some of the monitors in its price range. The performance of this monitor was a letdown and is not recommended for users which require high precision monitors. Although the colour reproduction is superb and is almost flicker free, many other areas such as clarity and resolution are lacking. The p1460 would be great for gaming and viewing images; however, the price is unjustifiably too high.
