Corsair TWINX2048-4400 PRO - PAGE 1William Henning - Tuesday, June 27th, 2006
With AMD moving to Socket AM2 it seems that the days of DDR memory are numbered. However ...
There are millions of systems out there that still use DDR memory, and there are still a lot of DDR motherboards being sold for Socket 754 and 939 AMD processors. There are even some DDR-based motherboards for Intel's LGA775 platform.
This is still a significant market, which will for some time need more memory -- especially with Vista just around the corner, with its significantly increased memory requirements. A lot of these systems can use high-performance DDR memory ... after all, a gaming enthusiast can get quite a performance boost by upgrading to a high performance video card and adding memory!
Corsair's latest entry into the high performance DDR memory market is their TWINX2048-4400 PRO dual channel memory kit.
The modules are rated to run at a blistering PC4400 rating, which is 550MHz equivalent (275MHz, double data rate) - allowing for a theoretical maximum bandwidth of close to 8.8GB/sec in a dual channel configuration. They also have colored LEDs on top of the modules for an added enthusiast feel. Personally I only care about the performance of the modules.
These modules are guaranteed at a 3-4-4-8/2T @ 550MHz rating, and the reviewer's guide says that they can actually run at 3-4-4-8/1T on most systems!
Software used during testing consisted of the following:
- Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2
- NVIDIA ForceWare 84.21 drivers
- RightMark Memory Analyzer
- SiSoft Sandra
- WinRAR
- Doom 3
Do these modules perform to specifications? Do they have what it takes to earn a place in enthusiast systems?
