Hotway HD9-U2LA Review - PAGE 2
William Henning - Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

Before you do anything else, follow the instructions in the manual to install an IDE hard drive in the LanDrive. I installed a Maxtor 200GB 7200rpm 8ms drive, however you can use any 3.5" IDE drive. If you don't need to store a lot of information, there are some really cheap 80GB drives out there, however if you need to store a lot, you could actually add a 500GB monster.

Now connect your LanDrive to your network - in most cases you will use the supplied Ethernet cable to connect the LanDrive to a hub or router. I was pleased to find that the LanDrive has Auto MDI/MDIX, so you don't have to worry about using a straight-through or crossover patch cable.

By default, the LanDrive has an IP address of 169.254.0.1 - but make sure to check your manual, as it looks like there are several re-labeled versions of the LanDrive on the market, some of which may have different default IP addresses. First thing you need to do is to use a web browser to configure your LanDrive.

As you can see, you can control the host name, workgroup, time, date, language and enable a DHCP server from this page.

You can also see the type of drive that is connected, and how much space is available on it.

The manual really should have spent more time on how to find and configure the IP settings; novice users will be quite confused here.

Once you have connected to the LanDrive, you see the System Information screen above (Status on the menu).

Now that you are logged in, you need to configure the network settings to match your home network.

The IP Configuration menu lets you set the LanDrive to accept a DHCP provided IP address, or lets you manually specify the IP address, netmaks, gateway and dns servers.
