Bluetake I-PHONO Cordless Headphone Review - PAGE 4
Anthony Roberts - Wednesday, August 4th, 2004

Range and reception

Reception using these headphones is quite good. One of the worst pair of cordless headphones I used was several years ago, and it was an IR based model. As with cordless IR mice, IR headphones have the annoying disadvantage of requiring constant line of sight. For reception quality and range, the I-phono's beat out any other cordless headphones I've had the chance of using. The range on these puppies is also pretty decent. I was getting from 15-20 feet range before the signal started to drop off enough to lose reception. Surprisingly, if I fall too far out of range, the headphones can "resume" their connection when you get within range again. My experience with Bluetooth headsets for phones is quite the opposite: any loss of connection results in the cellphone terminating the connection between the headset and the phone.

Sound Quality

I was pretty skeptical when I first took the i-phono for a test run. I was definitely hopeful, since it seemed like a VERY interesting and innovative product, but my hopes were tinged by a fear of poor quality reception or poor music quality. Thank goodness the music quality is superb for a device of this type. I have very limited experience using headphones in general, but out of the dozen or so casual listening headphones I've gone through, the I-Phono easily matches or beats the best of them. Keep in mind I am talking about casual listening phones here - the headphones don't have the soundstage, reproductive quality, and overall musicality of a good pair of high quality speakers matched with a good amp and CD player. For those who have a more discerning taste I would warn that the I-PHONO's did tend towards the boomy side, with a slight preponderous towards slightly bloated bass and muddied lower range. I think few of you will fault the headphones for this since most people looking at wireless solutions will tend to find that they do not have much chance in getting an audiophile level product. For its purposes, which is to provide high quality audio with high compatibility and high freedom, I'd say that Bluetake succeeded 100% in their goals. If you just want to use these to listen to some tunes, and to blow things up at night without disturbing your neighbours, this will suit you perfectly.
