Palit HD 4870 Sonic Review - PAGE 3

Bundle'n'Box

Once again, international hardware-enthusiast recognized mascot Frobot, the dainty cybernetic frog, dominates this Palit box. This time around, Frobot is carrying some sort of super-advanced sandwich grill, over the backdrop of what appears to be a post-industrial wasteland.

On the back of the box, blurbs are written, in eight different languages (present also throughout the documentation): good ole English, Turkish, Russian, French, Polish, German, Italian, and Spanish for the Spaniards.

The bundle includes a great quick installation guide, a driver, a molex-to-PCIe power convertor, a DVI to VGA adapter, and a HDMI adapter.

All in all, a complete bundle, but a CrossFire bridge would be a nice addition to round out the package.

Overclocking

The Palit HD 4870 Sonic is already overclocked -- but hey, why not try to get every last little bit of speed you can?

The good news is that the Palit HD4870 Sonic was able to sustain the maximum allowable overclock allowed using the Catalyst Control Center. The 'Turbo' clocks for this video card are 776 for the core, and 1000 for the memory. Using the CCC, we were able to set the core to 790 -- a minor increase over the 'Turbo' clock -- while the memory gained another 100 MHz, going to 1100.

These settings were 100% stable through two back-to-back rounds of our benchmarks. However, the fan was a touch noisy when being pushed this hard.

On the next page, we made seperate charts showing the differences between the three settings: 'Normal' mode, 'Turbo' mode, and Max O/C mode.
