Samsung 173MW - PAGE 1
Terren Tong - Friday, March 5th, 2004

Introduction

It was years ago that Apple released the Apple Cinema Display and like every tech enthusiast it immediately caught my eye. Wide screen televisions were not even the norm yet but here was Apple releasing a wide screen LCD for a computer. Unfortunately she was a harsh mistress- the interface was a proprietary Apple Standard instead of the usual 15 pin VGA or DVI connection. The price tag was also stratospheric- inane thoughts of robbing several banks to finance this indulgence had to dismissed with reluctance. Widescreen LCD displays have remained more or a less an Apple only exclusive with their Apple Cinema Display line and no other major manufacturer on the PC side has made any real attempt to manufacture and market a similar product but instead have stuck with the traditional VGA aspect ratio screens. Widescreen on the television side is making more of an impact as they are becoming as ubiquitous as the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio but for some reason the same trend is not catching on the PC front as quickly. It was a few months ago that we took a look at Samsung's 172MP; a product that we came away sufficiently impressed with although it had a few minor issues. Today we take a look at the 173MW, a hybrid of the 172W and 172MP.
