This is Sonys latest addition to the CD Mavica series. Riding on the success of the CD200, the CD300 is the 3.3 Megapixel version of that digital camera. The defining quality in the CD Mavica series is the Carl Zeiss 3x zoom lens and the direct write to CD-R/CD-RW.
The CD300 writes directly to a 156MB CD-R (8cm). The advantage of using this technology is that it is highly portable to computers with a CDROM drive. The great thing about the ability to use a CD-RW is that it allows you to perform functions similar to a memory stick but with a large 156MB capacity.
The downside to this is that the camera has moving parts and this consumes more battery life than those which use standard memory modules like Smartmedia or Compactflash. The CD-RW format can only be read by CD burner, which means only certain computer users, will be able to use the CD-RW. Furthermore, the camera itself is rather weighty and large so if you are looking for something that will fit in your pocket like the Sony Cybershot then this is not the right camera.
