We take it to the streets, the tracks and rally courses in R Racing Evolution. The wheel again is put to the test for compatibility. The game itself is set to dance between simulation and arcade gameplay with various unique characteristics.
First up of course has to be rally, Waterbridge standard is the target course and the WRX STi Impreza is the weapon of choice. One of the first things I noticed was that the steering response was a bit too high so I reset it to the default of 0 for maximum radius turning. From there things started to shape up. Given that R Racing Evolution is a picky title to begin with on the off-road from things were a bit strange from the start. The response and accuracy of the wheel and pedals were solid throughout the Waterbridge area, the only thing was managing to control the sensitivity which still might be a bit much.
Taking things to Monaco is next, a street course with steep grades, hard turns and pleanty of room to test the response of the wheel on pavement. Using the RX7 the game seemed to level out on sensitivity, the unfortunate part was that the game tends to be a bit spin happy with FR setup cars. After nursing the pedals for a lap I was able to get a fairly decent time but I should warn that even slightly going a bit over half throttle in a corner can result in some sharp responses from the game itself. I do not really think that Fanatec could have anticipated that being an issue so it's hard to hold such a thing against them.
Next up is Philips Island, We jump in the FF RSX and let loose on the track. The lower power car seems to be just in the sweet spot and really lights up the track in the game, gear shifts are quick and accurate and steering is dead on for response, coming in hot into each corner I can lay the car right into the line I want and handle it through the corner. The blind corners and hard angles seemed to be nothing difficult for the RSX to take on with the Fanatec.
Overall compatibility seems to be based on the software more than the hardware, due to some issues with the game itself it makes some cars a bit hard to control in race application.
