Samsung YEPP YP-700H MP3 Player - PAGE 2
Michael Thu - Thursday, July 25th, 2002

File Transfer/Software

Loading music into the player is like basically like going for a jog without any effort - quick, easy and effective. There is a file manager and a CD ripping software that comes with the YP-700 and both setting up the USB cable and installing all necessary software took me less than 5 minutes. Once the software is setup and the USB cable is in place, all that's needed is to find a little plug on the player to connect the cable to the player. Once plugged in, the usage is similar to using Windows explorer and you could be ripping CDs and putting in music into the player to prepare for that boring Chemistry class with enough time left to iron your clothes. And talking about classes, the YP-700 comes with a sound recorder, which can record that lecture as long as there is still space left in the player's 128MB memory. You can then copy that lecture back to your computer and make some money off the guy who was cutting class.

How does it sound?

Now comes the moment of truth for any and all audio players - MUSIC QUALITY. The YP-700, luckily, produces a good enough sound and passed the test in my books. The pass however, is not a very high pass and most of the points deducted comes from the fact that there is just nothing to adjust the quality of the music and the equalizer seems just plain useless in improving music quality. There are three options in the equalizer - Classic, Jazz and Rock - and there seems to be little difference when switching between the three settings. For example, I decided to put down some hardcore Hip Hop beats and was totally dissed by the extreme lack of bass - no big bassing G is going to dig this …hmmm…back to the boom box. The sounds came in clean & detailed, but the bass really was not apparent at all.

That being said, one thing that surely can be improved upon is adding more bass or at least more equalizer options that actually make a difference. The standard issue earphones however are not bad at all. They fit nicely in my ear and didn't become annoying for a long time - that's really good compared to most of the other earphones out there designed apparently by people who possess no ears.

Radio quality is quite average and tuning the radio is relatively easy to do. The tuner doesn't seem to pick up the stations in stereo. The sound is slightly muffled when you listen to the FM tuner.

When using the voice recorder, I found the sound files playback to be muffled. For a digital recorder, I would expect better quality playback.

Concerns and complaints

There are a few concerns about for the YEPP YP-700 player.

  • Firstly, there is the lack of bass which is really quite annoying as this reduces some of the finest tunes out there to semi-working radio quality.

  • The buttons on the YP-700 in general are quite small and most NBA stars will probably end up squishing the buttons and …. eventually switching back to the boom box with them large switches. Therefore, increasing the size of the buttons will probably make the device a more user-friendly device.

  • The portable battery pack does not seem to fit the player probably and easily slide out of its slot ending whatever musical bliss one might be in. This is quite annoying but given the rather long time the rechargeable battery lasts, this is not a very big problem.

    Evaluation.

Upon weighing out the various factors such as the quality of music and looking at the pros and cons as listed above, it can be concluded that the YEPP YP-700 is pretty neat stuff and it gets a rating of:

    Overall Score: 77%
