Age of Mythology Review

Age of Mythology (AoM) is MicroSoft’s latest real-time strategy game. Built on the Age of Empires game engine, AoM combines the resource management aspects of Age of Empires and adds a new twist—gods and creatures from classic mythology. Together, the solid Age of Empires resource- and technology- management mechanics, combined with the influence the gods have over the flow of the game, lead to a fast-paced game with a multitude of strategic possibilities.

Conquest: Frontier Wars Review

It seems that no review of Conquest: Frontier Wars would be complete without first giving a mention about its tumultuous past. Highly anticipated by many, C:FW almost never made it out of the construction queue.

MechCommander 2 Review

It appears that the Battletech universe is never at rest. In some form or another conflict constantly rages across the Inner Sphere, which is itself the fragmented remains of an old Terran empire known as the Star League. Strife and disorder rule the day as the various Successor States of the Star League vie for supremacy and one of the flashpoints in their struggle is the planet Carver V.

Mechcommander 2 Preview

The original MechCommander was but one of many games set in the Battletech universe. It had a good storyline and some cool graphics for its time and I enjoyed commanding the various mechs as they battled across the battered landscape of Port Arthur. It was followed up by the release of MechCommander Gold which included an expansion campaign as well as new options and new mechs. Now we are on the verge of getting MechCommander 2, and it looks very promising indeed.

Empire of the Ants Review

Everybody has spent some time in their childhood life examining these creatures, sometimes even playing God with them by feeding them sugar cubes and following the resulting line back to their colonies or flooding their home with water (bwahahaha!!). Some kids even went as far as getting their own ant colonies to watch them work. In any case, the developer Microids has given us the chance to run our own colony without the annoying problem of escaping ants. Published under Strategy First, Empire of the Ants can essentially be described as an RTS with elements of sim-style micromanagement mixed in.

Warcraft III Preview Part II

Last month was that of May, and for many people it meant term papers, and cramming for finals as everyone prepared for the impending summer. Fortunately for me, this also meant that the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 for all of you uncouth folks out there) would be making its way back to the Los Angeles Convention center. As usual I was as giddy as a schoolgirl at the opportunity to go and rub elbows with the gaming bigwigs as I had done last year. This year’s E3 however was a bit if a disappointment.

Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle Review

Waterloo – The name is synonymous with utter and total defeat, due to what can arguably be the biggest event of 1815. Without going into too much historical background, this was the site of Napoleon Bonaparte’s last battle against the combined might of the Anglo-Allied forces arrayed against France. Even to this day, the subject of Waterloo provides great fodder for debate, especially between historians who like discussing “what if?” scenarios.

Europa Universalis Review

Spanning 300 years of Europe’s colourful history and giving you a potential of over “800+ named provinces” to conquer… err control, EU promises to give megalomaniacal gamers a chance to satisfy their dark urges for world exploration, conquest and of course, domination.

Sudden Strike Review

Through all the ups and downs of the RTS genre over the last several years, one theme has been largely ignored - WWII. Turn-based strategy games have typically dominated the WWII scene with games such as 101: The Airborne Invasion of Normandy and others. While turn-based games might offer more grit and depth than RTS, they sometimes miss the mark in the action and graphics departments.

Red Alert 2 Review

Picture yourself sitting peacefully in the comfort of your living room watching your favorite television program, when suddenly a newscast flashes on the screen declaring that invading Soviet armed forces have destroyed the Statue of Liberty and their next target is Washington, D.C. and the Pentagon. Such a dreaded scenario plays out in Command & Conquer Red Alert 2, the long overdue sequel to the RTS game that helped put real-time strategy on the map.

Close Combat: Invasion over Normandy Review

Atomic’s newest addition to its’ real time strategy game Close Combat, Close Combat: Invasion Normandy has just been released and seems to be staying true to it’s successful formula. Depending on who you are that could be a good or bad thing. In this new title you control the outcomes of the D-Day landings from June 6, 1944 all the way through the to fight for the Cotentin Peninsula.

Sacrifice Review

From games such as MDK, and Earthworm Jim comes the next PC title from Shiny Entertainment, the real-time strategy title like no other. Imagine if you will, a third person RPG/Action/Adventure game similar in fashion to Drakan, mixed in with a 3d RTS such Myth, and you can kind of get a glimpse of the unique style of gameplay found in Sacrifice.

Homeworld: Cataclysm Review

Homeworld Cataclysm stands as a fine example of how to expand a game franchise with exactly the right mix of additions and enhancements to gameplay. To take an award winning RTS title like Homeworld and make it even better is a feat in itself. Cataclysm gracefully takes the series to a higher level in just about every facet of the game.

Submarine Titans Review

In today’s RTS world, the term “strategy” is synonymous with the terms “clicking” and “scrolling”. Many a would-be general has haggled over endless hours spent babysitting individual units and relaying orders to dense AI. Such disenchanting titles as Dune 2000 and Corsairs has bred a new spat of spoon-fed gamers who wouldn’t be allowed to command a latrine, let alone a platoon, in the event of a real war.

Dogs of War Review

An introductory cut scene sets the stage for an exciting game about some alien reptilian creatures attacking a human outpost on a foreign planet somewhere in space. Combined with a funky soundtrack, the intro conveys the story behind Dogs of War as good as any FMV could. Additionally, the first publicly released screenshots of Dogs of War showed a promising real-time tactical strategy game with a very impressive 3D engine.

Dark Reign 2 Review

"The graphics found in Dark Reign 2 is the area that Activision truly sets itself apart from the rest of the pack. I was truly taken back at times by the sheer beauty of the game. Everything in the game is completely 3d, and via clever use of lightmaps and particle effects. The developers did a great job in producing really awesome weather effects, as well as gargantuan and flowing waterfalls, that cascade down the sides of mountains."
