SUMMARY:
If you own a Dreamcast, or did back in the day, you're probably familiar with Sega Rally 2. A big racing hit in the arcades. It was the biggest racing game on the Dreamcast.
It boosted sales by a massive amount, due to gamer's hype about the analog controls, which the PS2 didn't have unless you bought a steering wheel with pedals.
Sega Rally 2 is an excellent arcade experience for Sega's Dreamcast.
The game has excellent fun gameplay, a large library of late 90s rally cars, like the Citroen Saxo and the Renault Clio, and it has great rally courses.
Though the game is let down by a few things.
First of all, the gearshifting on manual mode is terrible. You can't hear your engine over the most annoying co driver in the world. Also, if you can get xlose enough to some speakers to hear the engine, it's dubbed in engine sounds are inaccurate, and you'll find yourself hitting the rev limiter sooner than you'd expect. The gearshifting is terrible, and your only option is to go with the boring automatic mode.
Second, the male co driver is the most annoying co driver anyone can have. Colin McRae of Richard Burns would throw him over the edge of a big cliff and find it easier to drive the course without him.
"OH NO!" whenever you hit the wall. "EASY LEF-EASY RIGH-MEDIUM LEF". It's so hard to understand him, and the female co driver is a lot better.
Third, the physics in the game are terrible. You get cars that corner horribly, and you get cars that slide more than full fat butter in a wok at 150 MPH.
This can be turned into fun though, but those are the only two types of physics.
And the rallying is so unrealistic, you actually race people, rather than trying to get the best time and beat the other drivers.
But the game can also be excellent. The analog controls are awesome, the cars are great to look at, and the courses are cool. The multiplayer mode is excellent, up to four players can race.
The addition of the Dreamcast wheel in this game is probably your best thing to do. It does provide better control.
But I do recommend this game if you're a collector, it's a must have for a Dreamcast owner, and it can be very cheap to buy today.
Pick up your copy and have a fun time with friends.
They tried something new with the analog controls, and found it to be a bit more difficult than they imagined, and scrapped the idea of a brilliant physics engine.
But it's fun to play. Buy a copy if you like racing games, or if you are a collector.
