Soul Calibur is one of the first Dreamcast games released and is one of the best beat-em-up games in history. In the beginning, I just selected Sonic Adventure as I have my own financial problems at that time. After having a couple of bucks, I shelled out some money and this game is mine. It’s actually a fighting game that leads you to a new world, with dozens of missions for you to do and for you to unlock all the playable secret characters.

Graphics – 10
The sleek and beautiful introduction in a form of FMV was astoundingly amazing. This game will show all the characters at once with a rapid, beating music, flashing movements and flawless animations. If you have unlock more secret characters, they will be in the introduction of the game. Cool feature from Namco! While in the game itself, Namco enhanced the graphics from the arcade machine and everything was a simple port with numerous improvements. As this game was superior between the two versions, you’ll see the colours are much brighter, powerful internal Namco engines created a new Dreamcast version all together.

The background was simply beautiful and is created in a full 3D form. Indescribable marvelous fully 3D rendered characters followed without any strange looks in them, as in Virtua Fighter 3tb (If you want to look for any examples, just look at Pai and you can see that she looks really strange with her eyes!). Moreover, the light source, is simply cool whenever you attack the enemies. Trails of flashing red will follow together with slashes in a double-quick and smooth animations.

Music – 10
This game has been developed enough and there are simply tons of background music for every stages. There is even the name of the background music when you enter the particular stage. Personally, I simply like the beating music in the background, sort of giving you an adrenaline rush. Of course, once you’re engaged in a battle, you won’t notice the background music one bit, as all beat-em-up games have been!

Loud sound effects are more than bargained. Example, a slash from Sophitia’s sword will result a sound of knife plunging into the enemy and if the enemy protects, you will hear some sort of shield used. The voices are used in quite a big amount of number and they’re different for each character. Although it’s in Japanese, the almost-transparent subtitles will surely guide you efficiently.

Gameplay – 10
There are simply lots of modes for you to play, especially as there are hidden ones as well. But let’s concentrate on the main ones. The Arcade should be a mode that you will play always, after the Mission Battle. Once you completed the Arcade with any character, you will see the ending of the character’s quest thus unlock a new character for you to control as. After all through the good parts, the downside is that there are only 8 stages for each character and it’s pretty short.

The Mission Battle Mode, on the other hand provides points for you to buy more arts in the Art Gallery. Some of the arts contained hidden secret stages, missions, character’s costumes and even new modes for you to play! As the name already suggests, you’re in for a mission and a story will follow each time before you play, whether it follows the logic of the character’s story or not.

The Museum Mode contains the Art Gallery, together with other modes that you can see. There are certain modes that allow you to view each character’s movements automatically as you unlock them in the Mission Battle Mode. The Practice Mode is of course, for you to perfect your character’s fighting skills till you’re familiar with them. You can even view each character’s move lists with the name for each moves too!

Survival Mode is also fun for you to fight against all characters at once to see how far you can go. If you fancy for a multi-player game against your friend or any members of your family, plug in a second controller and head towards the Versus Mode. The Team Battle Mode also works for a two-player game but you can also opt to play against the computer. It allows you to choose characters as a team up to 8 players all together! Playing with friends or playing against computer don’t really matter in this game, there are lots of modes for you to be entertained and honestly, you won’t feel tired playing even after months!

Controls – 10
Controls are not too bad and they’re easy to perform, considering that you're using a Dreamcast controller. You can buy the arcade stick if you like if you feel more comfortable with it. Attacks just needs a combination of buttons and moves and it's incredibly easy that even a five year-old will learn them! Added to that, there are also simply many moves that you can easily perform and that’s why you’ll mostly get confused if you see the move list!

Replay Value – 10
As this is a fighting game, it will definitely last long, added with Namco’s superior reputation together with the familiar internal fighting engines, all from Tekken too! About more than six modes for you to play, more than 10 characters for to explore the moves on and the fancy Mission Battle mode for completely! Especially as there are over 300 Arts for you to buy, ranging higher and higher points all the time.

Overall – 10
Namco’s biggest success is definitely the hot-selling Soul Calibur in my opinion and their Playstation successor, the Tekken series should be the second. As Namco has made a wise investment to Dreamcast, you shouldn’t be worried about any bugs in it as Namco is a company with good reputation. I’m not trying to exaggerate every categories but honestly, this game is worth ten times that you spend! Shell out some money and grab this game before it’s sold out! Now, how about Soul Calibur 2?

THE GOOD:
Everything

THE BAD:
Nothing

SUMMARY:
I really enjoyed playing this game. It was so much fun and I like picking all my different characters. I like Sophitia the best and I like her second outfit. it is cool how you could change their outfits for battle. well....there was one really ugly dude...oh yeah! The gay one i think it was Volvo. He was really gay and he walked weird. I didnt like Crevantes either. Oh well....I just have to live with it. Anyway. I thought Maxi was cool cuz he just is. None of the people there were cute guys but I still like the game. lol It is worth buying. It is good but I think Soul Calibur 2 is really better. I think you should buy Soul Calibur 2 first! ^-^ Thats what I would do but I have the first one already. Well....overall the game was good and I enjoy fighting games ^-^ Like grand theft auto ^-^ Well....thats it...the game is fun and it is really cool.

THE GOOD:
Awsome fighting, good graphics, and sweet charcters, like Kilik

THE BAD:
After a while, 1-player mode can get a bit boring. Also, Ivy is prettty cheap w/ her whip.

SUMMARY:
*Awsome arenas
*Wicked awsome charaters
*Easy to play, but hard to master
*Amuteurs can compete equally w/ pros
*Cool throws, I like the one where Kilik hits them w/ his rod, jumps off and the pole flies to him
*Its really fun to beat on your friends, ecspecially Heiheichi, he fights w/o wepons, and thats good for bragging rights.
*Every character has a good crop of moves
*Collecting weapons is fun, and gratifing when you get the soul egde
*There is a blance between characters, likeRapheal is wicked fast, but is really light or nightmare is strong but a bit slow
*Seeing your friends crumble after you pull off an awsome combo gives you happy feelings inside
*The 3d spectrum is good because you can dodge attacks
*There is actually reasons for guarding, so when they leave an opening, you attack
*Nightmare looks wicked, and there's no wrong there
*Its fun to make hot chicks like Talim beat up on the tough guy, like Asteroth
*Asteroths hat is cool, I want one

THE GOOD:
Out of all the fighters of the PS1, or Dreamcast this is the best, it even beat most PS2 and Xbox fighters until Soul Caliber 2 came out! The Graphics were great, and the action was solid. Character design was as creative and cool as can be. The arena's were all really cool too! And of course, the various options and forms of combat the game provided were great too. Each of the characters has their own moves and styles of combat, and have special attacks that will rock your world! Different costumes add to customization. And to top it off there's a Museum in which you can learn more about your favorite characters.

THE BAD:
The arcade mode was a bit short and simple, and the story, although good, wasn't used to the fullest. Alot of the plot was left unexplained.

SUMMARY:
In total this is one of the greatest games ever made, and anyone with a Dreamcast should get it, even if they have Soul Caliber 2.

THE GOOD:
grfx, sound, plot, chars

THE BAD:
controls, levels

SUMMARY:
i liked this game. honestly i was impressed (which isnt common, if you are a loyal fan of my reviews). i thought it still tango-ed with some older style moves and level styles but all in all it was a breast of freash air, i mean breath of fresh air. im sorry i was still thinking about the graphics. I did notice many very accurate bodily features in some of the characters, there was definitely some perverted people who paid very close attention to body detail and changing weather conditions LOL. in all seriousness tho. it really was a very thouroughly completed game. the battles, the plot, even the idea of side-plots was gratifying to the most hard-core gamers. Though the Dreamcast completely failed and Sega went under only to sell video games to other companies now, I think Soul Calibur is a legacy that will continue to profit and flourish through it's sequels that are springing up universaly on all the new major systems.

Visuals
One thing, even now they look great, and at the time, they looked absolutely FANTASTIC!
I am still surprised they managed graphics that good on a system like that (although it was quite powerful).
There are a few things that should be sorted out like weapons and stuff going through walls etc. but the levels are lush and the characters and their weapons are nicely detailed.
One thing I like is how it flows nicely and some great lighting off of the weapon clashes.
This was alaso the very first game to use "weapon lines", which has been copied a lot, so it goes to show that it may sound cheesy, but it is a great aspect.
10/10

Audio:
I love the music, ending themes and character voices etc.
Sword clashes sound wierd but level music is good and the ned themes are great.
There isn't much else to say about it other than It is good for a fighting game.
8/10

Gameplay:
The main difference that seperates this fighting game from so many others is that you use weapons. This is fantastic. You can block and parry and there is so much you can do with your weapon.
The characters have different weapons and the game revovles around 2 swords called the "soul edge" swords, supposedly the most powerful swords ever.

The controls are nice and moves are asey to pull off but some characters have an unfair advantage because of tremendous speed power and range, e.g. Nightmare If you know all his moves and are good with him, the odds are low of you losing to a CPU.
9/10

longevity:
Like all fighters completing the game with everyone can be done quite shortly but it is god fun and get a mate round for a versus match and you can waste afew hours battling each other.
8/10

Overall this is awesome and deserves 2 thumbs-up.
A classic, to be truly remembered, I can't wait for the sequel.

THE GOOD:
the different weapøns are really fun tø use, the graphics are awesøme, and the players are pretty cøøl.

THE BAD:
peøple whø are playing før the first time just push a whøle bunch øf buttøns and usually they'll win.

SUMMARY:
i think this game is really fun tø play. the graphics are tyte [when they jump it'z kinda like the matrix but they can't fløat in mid-air ør anything] and i løve høw the the møvements are swift and fast. i alsø praise the fact that yøu can møve in all directiøns [nøt just frønt ør back]. it'z challenging against øther peøple ør at least nøt øn *bleep* møde and takes a løt øf skill tø really be a prø, but it's still a cøøl game. the backgrøunds are pretty interactive [seeing that yøu can fall øff if yøu're øn a platførm]. this is definately my favørite game [aside frøm the whøle tekken series øf cøurse].

THE GOOD:
The whole package

THE BAD:
Absolutely nothing

SUMMARY:
I had hours and hours of fun unlocking all the secrets and enjoyed every last minute.
The graphics are beautiful and the game just flows so perfectly.
It takes a while to learn all the character's move but it's well worth it.
No other fighter compares to this (except the joy of first playing Street Fighter when it first came out

THE GOOD:
Everything.

THE BAD:
*Nothing*

SUMMARY:
Hate to actually advertise, but this is quite simply greatest fighting game ever made. There's far too much to go in depth for, whether it be the graphics, soundtrack, amazing gameplay, unlockables, infinite replay value, or immense amount of FUN that you will gain from slashing away, skilled or unskilled, newbie or veteran...
It's simply the best fighting game, and best port of a game from the arcade, ever done, period. Pick up two copies. One for play, and one in case of emergencies.
