THE GOOD:atmosphere, graphics, gameplay, controls
THE BAD:
annoying map, no duct-tape on mars (reference to doom 3), story is vague, ammo and lack of reload
SUMMARY:
The DS is the perfect hand held for fps games, yet there aren't nearly enough ds fps games. Come to think of it neither is there any really good horror games (maybe Resident evil). so this game pretty much hits 2 birds with one stone. Its a great horror fps.
The story is not very well developed, but that doesn't detract from the atmosphere.
what amazes me most however, is the frame rate, its the smoothest running game on the ds by far.
I'm sure you heard it being called "doom3 meets silent hill" and thats pretty true, but what i like about it, as opposed to doom3, is that its scariness is in a generally creepy atmosphere and not in monster closets (meaning a monster popping out and making you crap yourself)
So.. gameplay... well at first the combat is a bit annoying, the nightstick is a horrible weapon (in fact i found myself just running away from most chestmores rather then fighting them, till i got the pistol) but once you get the first firearm, the pistol, the gameplay gets much better, and more doom3-ish. Enemies are cool, although shortsighted, i often manage to sneak up to an enemy till i can just see him, but he still cant see me (looking direct at me) and i shoot his weak spot killing him in a single shot. In fact i should have mentioned by now, the most common enemies, the chestmores take 3 pistol shots to die, however their heart is exposed and can be shot for an insta kill.. a headshot wont do much damage, so dont even think about it...
Graphics and sound are as good as you'll ever get for the ds, everything adding perfectly to the atmosphere. the lighting is especially stunning, while its no doom3, its pulls off the same effect from a gameplay point of view, and is still convincing. All sound is good, except those annoying slugs... but otherwise the sound is perfect, at times you'll hear children sing for example, and it will send chills down your spine.
2 annoying factors I have to mention however: no reloading, you can only carry the shots that fit in your gun, luckily theres ammo scattered everywhere.
Spawning: enemies respawn every time you re-enter the same room, this wouldnt be so bad if the ammo and health items respawned too, but they don't.. so you technically have unlimited enemies, but limited ammo
Summary: great gameplay, great graphics, great sound, only a few minor negatives.. must have for any fps fan!
