"This style of gameplay certainly has its following, as ChunSoft has been doing this type of game for years. But its implementation in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon hasn't evolved a whole lot to provide enough variety that'll sustain its extensive storyline. It drags on and on without much change, which is why it's a good thing it's been structured in segments for quick-shot, handheld-friendly dungeon exploration. Both the GBA and the Nintendo DS versions are virtually identical in experience, with the exception of a couple of dual-screen elements that feel thrown in at a bare minimum level."

"A simplistic dungeon-hack that, despite its cornucopia of faults, is incredibly addictive and will keep veteran Poke-junkies coming back for more, even when they know they shouldn't."

"The injection of Pokémon characters and aspects hasn't done anything to improve ChunSoft's oft-copied dungeon hack."

"Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team may not be a typical entry in the long-running series, but it's an interesting new direction for the franchise. Quite frankly, it's a nice change from a formula that has, admittedly, grown a bit stale over the years. It may confuse some and frustrate others, but its addictive nature should keep you hooked until you learn to appreciate the art of the dungeon crawl."
