Background:
Cauis Qualls, a 15 year old boy, lives with his foster father near Alewallah. A beast attacks the village, and they fight it off. His father is judged because he is part of the beast heritage, and they run off along with Cauis' childhood friend, Rubian. The church's guards chase after them, but Cauis' father saves the two. Cauis now wonders about his parents and his birth.
