THE GOOD:By far the best First-Person shooter on the GBA. Great multiplayer and a classic remake.
THE BAD:
Allthough by far the better game, it wasn't as challenging as backtrack, and there are far less weapons and no bot-based deathmatches.
SUMMARY:
That said, however. This game is utterly fantastic. It is a remake of the original pc Doom - thought of as the greatest First-Person shooter of all time. The game was made by legendary developers ID, who, apart from making Doom, also made the first ever FPS (first-person shooter) - Wolfenstein 3D, Quake (the first FPS to incorporate full 3d entities), Quake II (thought of as the world's greatest game at the time), Quake III (A hugely popular multiplayer FPS to rival Unreal Tournement), and, as well as loads of Doom spin-offs, the allmighty Return to Castle Wolfenstein. ID have never failed in any of their games.
And Doom has survived the PC/GBA journey very well. The gameplay's as addictive as ever, the weapons are varied (you just love the shotgun) and everything's just utterly fantastic.
The multiplayer is also very good, it has the standard deathmatch but also a very nifty co-operative mode. Turn the difficulty level up to Nightmare and you and your friend have a very challenging game ahead, where co-operation is vital.
The small touches are great as well. The face at the bottom of the screen is a famous part of doom. The face has a look of pain when you're shot and glares over to the direction where he was hit, which can be useful if you're being sniped at by a hidden gunman. His face gets bloodier and more battered depending on your health status (when you're on 1 health his face is covered in blood and its almost non-recognisable), and his eyes glow when you have God mode on. One thing I like about the face is the way that when you blast away with your railgun at a massive horde of demons, the face contorts into the gritted-teeth snarl that you'll doubtless be having at the time (everyone I know had that face at the time).
To sum up. Doom is a lot better than both BackTrack and Ecks Vs Sever (unless you like being sneaky and completing mission objectinves, in that case choose E v S) apart from that, this game is undeniably brilliant. If you like gung-ho carnage games, get this, if you don't, get it anyway, because its a bloody good game.
