THE GOOD:It was a good game overall, some good graphics (for when it was made), good gameplay, exciting adventure. You did many things from giving a drink to the Gate Guards to exploring the depths of caves. Pokemon were spread out greatly, and it was fun to have Pikachu following you around. Talking to him helped out nicely, and gave you a laugh sometimes. You could see how he acted, and I liked this a lot.
THE BAD:
Pikachu couldn't evolve, and I felt guilty whenever I didn't have him on my team. Without him following you, the game is a little bit worse. After the game it was very boring, there wasn't much to do besides keep challenging the Elite Four. Leveling up was extremely tedious, because it was hard to keep up with all the other trainers and gym leaders. I would have liked it more if they would have given more wild Pokemon that were good sooner in the game, and more water types. Fire types were also hard to come by, and took a lot of looking. The Special Attack and Special Defense were combined, and that annoyed me.
SUMMARY:
The same old, same old Pokemon story: You are a young teenager, who wants to become a Pokemon Master. When you start, your mom tells you that your rival was looking for you. You go out, and, after venturing into the grass (something you should never do if you do not have any Pokemon), you are confronted by Proffesor Oak. You are both thrust into a battle against a wild Pikachu (the only one of its kind), and Proffesor Oak catches it. Little do you know that will be your Pokemon. After a scolding, he brings you to his lab, where you would have been able to choose from 3 Pokemon to start out with: Squirtle, Charmander, or Bulbasaur, but he already gave them all away. This gets you stuck with Pikachu, who is very ignorant and thinks he is the boss of you. You rival will have Eevee, and depending on your how you fare in battle, he will evolve it into Vaporeon, Jolteon, or Flareon.
Of course, after receiving your Pokemon, you are thrust into a battle straight away with your rival. After winning - or losing - your rival demands he should be better. He challenges you to take the Pokemon Challenge, and see who really can be a Pokemon Master. After hopefully pounding your rival into the ground, you leave to go to the next town - Veridian City. There is a gym there, but of course, it is locked. This gym will be the toughest - and last - gym you battle, and the leader is Giovanni. There is a grumpy old man not letting you by because of the fact that he needs his coffee, so you should decide to head over to the Pokemon Mart. There the clerk says you should deliver Proffesor Oak's package, and of course, you agree. You have no other choice, as the Old Man won't move and you are still unsure of yourself. After bringing it back to Proffesor Oak, you get a PokeDex from him, and this really starts your adventure. Going back to the Old Man you see he has moved, and he gives you a lesson on how to catch a Pokemon. Now, let's head to the Veridian Forest. He wants you to collect data on all 150 Pokemon. Easy, right? Not quite so...
To me, the gameplay was good, it kept me very busy, and I liked it a lot. There aren't many ways they could have made it better, except for a more diverse challenge. It was good because it was based off the anime more, which rarely happens.
The music was enjoyable, and controls good. Something that I didn't like though was that some Pokemon had the same "cry", or sound they make. They made great use of everything, from the A Button to the Select Button. The Select was very important, as you could access something quick. Very helpful since the bag isn't organized at all. They bag could only hold 20 items, and you had only one section.
The graphics were incredible for the time is was made in - surpassing everything I could have thought was made then. I have to say that they did good on that. The sprites were well a little messy, but it was a 24-Bit game, so you can't blame them. which I enjoyed a lot. Comparing them to Red, and Blue, it was very, very good.
After you complete the game, I got bored and had nothing to do. You can't keep beating the Elite Four forever, and there isn't anything to do.
A few Pokemon troubles annoyed me. Special stats were combined, and the move pool was very small. No shinies were in it, and many factors were left out.
The HMs were annoying, as you couldn't get rid of them and they were hard to find. I had a lot of difficulties with this. They didn't do much, especially Flash. You don't often use that since you can easily beat most Pokemon.
There are new areas to navigate and explore into, which is another great thing because it just overall makes the game not seem so repetitive, even though it is. All in all, I think its a pretty great game, and I would recommend Yellow for anyone, even people who don't think they would like it.
