THE GOOD: + Amazing visuals + Almost flawless control system + Cool power ups + Many levels + 120 stars to collect + Funny title screen + Fun ways to get stars
THE BAD: - Bosses are so easy it's funny - Occasional control faults - The camera. Uggh. - Can be frustratingly difficult
SUMMARY: Super Mario 64 is considered to be not only one of the best N64 games but one of the best games of all time. All of its reivews were positive and very high. Since 1997 Super Mario 64 has sold around 12 million copies and around 5-6 million on the Wii's Virtual Console. It was also so popular it was a remake on the DS (Super Mario 64 DS) which has sold 5 million around the globe. Honestly, and oddly, I prefer Super Mario Sunshine, but this is a fantastic game. If you don't own this on the Wii or anything else, you are officially bonkerz.
GRAPHICS Look! That castle looks stunning! These visuals are spectacular.
Super Mario 64 puts the Nintendo 64's graphics to the maximum use. The worlds are detailed and all the surfaces are textured lovely. Nintendo have even added in background objects to suit the environments and make them look nicer. Also, in a stage called "Jolley Roger Bay", Nintendo even put a fog effect above the water making it look realistic. All the stages are detailed and the imagination of the folks at Nintendo has turned the stages into magnificent pieces of art. They are funny, some are challenging and many of them are nice to look at. Simply fantastic.
GAMEPLAY The main play concept of SM64 is to collect all 120 stars.
Super Mario 64 trashes all the old Mario gameplay for a new fresh style of play. Unlike the other games where Mario HAD to follow and 2D route to the end of the stage, Mario 64 is in full 3D, thus giving you the experience of exploring the massive Peach's Castle and all the levels as you please. Sometimes it's fun in Mario 64 to just stuff the aim of the game and mess around in levels. All the levels are big and have many secret areas and it just feels so fun to explore them. Ofcourse you can't ditch the aim of the game forever, and that's where it comes in. In Mario 64, you must collect all the 120 stars in each level. There are 6 in each of the 15 worlds and the rest are hidden in places in the main castle. Super Mario 64 has great replay value thanks to the amount of stars players must gather. Fun as hell, man.
STORY In SM64 you have to get the power stars, beat Bowser and save Princess Toadstool (A.K.A: Peach).
Super Mario 64 follows the main plots of all the Mario games, bar a few. Basically, Mario recieves a letter from Princess Peach asking him to come to the castle and have cake with her. When Mario arrives in the castle, he finds out that the princess was captured by the King Koopa, Bowser, and now Mario must gather together the Power Stars to restore the castle and save Princess Peach. First you begin in the door that wasn't sealed and get stars there, then Mario can adavance to further levels in the game.
BAD You know what the camera in this game must do? It must die.
Super Mario 64 is highly overhyped in my opinion. Only a few Youtubers have noticed and taken into account the games main flaws. Lets check them out,. Firstly, the bosses. They are easy as eating a cupcake, all you mainly have to is go behind them and punch them or pick them up and throw them. In the Bowser battles all you do is grab Bowser by his tail and throw him into a spike mine to damage him. You only have to do this once, bar the final battle where you must do it 3 times. In fact, only the final battle actually creates a challenge. Secondly, Mario 64 has some nasty controls faults at times. The analouge control is great, but sometimes Mario will not do what you want or you may lose control of him if certain things happen (i.e: when his butt gets set on fire). Thirdly, and worstly, Mario 64's camera. Believe me, it sucks mostof the time. It may go behind walls and leave you unaware of where you are, or sometimes you may be unable to turn it because of a nearby wall which get really annoying. Last of all, Mario 64 can be very hard at times. Sometimes things you need to get, like Red Coins, are placed in difficult areas that require serious skill and many retries to get. And that concludes this episode of Super Mario 64 Bad Points. See you again;)
OVERALL I love this game to the full. It's fun, brilliantly designed , oh and the music is awesome too. Super Mario 64 is a brillaint game and one of the best, actually THE best jump from 2D to 3D. This game rules so much you have issues if you hate it. Go see your doctor now. Mario orders you to buy his amazing game. Do so now.
FINAL SCORES Neoscore------------4.7 % Score-------------95% /10 Score-----------9/10 Grade---------------A+
THE GOOD: + Easy to learn controls + Mario's many moves + Lots of levels + Excellent graphics for it's time + Great Storyline + Decent Sound
THE BAD: - Sometimes glitches can mess you up in a few levels
SUMMARY: This game is full of action, starting from when you first turn it on before you even get to choose one of four files to play from. After the Nintendo logo, you'll see the Super Mario 64 logo, and then come to an interactive screen with Mario's head. Using your analog stick, you can move the hand around and grab and stretch parts of Mario's face such as his ears, nose, etc. After this little gimmick, you'll be at the file selection screen where you will first start off.
In this menu, you can move Mario's facial features around such as the ears, nose, etc.
The story starts off with Mario popping out of a pipe in front of Princess Peach's castle, with Mario reading a letter. The letter was an invitation for Mario to come and have some cake. Unfortunately when he gets there, he doesn't find a cake, but that the host was captured by his nemesis Bowser. Mario must go throughout the castle collecting Stars in each level to face off against Bowser in order to save the Princess.

The mechanics and levels of Super Mario 64 are excellent to say the least. In each level, there are a total of seven regular stars, and an extra star that you get by collecting 100 coins in the level. To into a level, you must jump through a painting usually portraying a certain area within the level. The levels range from many different environments and gimmicks. The first level is bob-omb themed level, with bombs everywhere and even water bomb cannons shooting at you. Other levels include a fire level, a sand level, a water level, an underground level, and a snow level. A few levels with gimmicks include a level where if you jump in a pipe, you'll pop out bigger than most of the enemies, and while going back inside the pipe you'll be smaller than the enemies.
Lethal Lava Land, one of the game's many different levels.
Mario has plenty of moves to use during the game, and some are pretty cool looking too. The more basic moves of Mario are the running, walking, and tip-toeing, which will change depending on the pressure you put on the analog stick in any direction. Using the A button Mario can do a regular jump, a second jump right after that will do a higher jump, and if you perform this while running and add in a third jump you will do a somersault in the air which is the highest jump in the game. Also, if you jump towards a wall, and right before hitting it press A again, you can do a wall kick. Fighting moves include using the B button to do a regular punch, use it while running to dive into an enemy, press it twice to do a one two punch, and three times to do a punch kick combo. When in mid-air, pressing B will make Mario kick. Crouching moves all include using the button Z. By holding it down and jumping while stationary, Mario will do a double backflip, while running, a long jump. Press B while crouching will result in a break-dance type leg sweep.
This image shows one of Mario's fighting moves, the punch/kick combo.
The graphics of the game were exceptionally good, especially for the Nintendo 64. Everything was clear cut, Toad, Mario, and everything else was very well done compared to other games for the N64. The sound was very good too. When Mario is running, you can clearly hear each footstep. You can hear waterfalls, goomba's, birds, monkey's screeches, and of course, Mario's grunts and sayings such as "Mama Mia!" All of these are well timed, and fit perfectly as well.
In the level "Jolly Roger Bay", you can see a perfect example of how advanced the graphics were for its time. You can clearly see every part of Mario, the platforms, stalagmites, and even the fog above the water!
The gameplay was definitely the best aspect of the game. The missions you had to complete were very different, and usually they were specific to the level's environment. One example would be in the first snow level, you had to make a snowman, race a penguin on your belly, and help a mother penguin find her lost baby. In a few missions, you had to race Koopa the Quick, basically a track star Koopa who if you can beat, you will earn a star. Canons played a fun role in the gameplay as well. Using them, you could shoot to a secluded part of a level that you normally couldn't reach, which was what you needed to do in a few missions.
This video shows the gameplay perfectly. It shows many of the moves of Mario as well as what the first level looks like and how to get a star.
The different caps Mario had in his arsenal extended the gameplay and mission's boundaries to an almost intangible extent. There were a total of three caps, the Wing Cap, Metal Cap, and Invisible Cap. With the Wing Cap, jump three times and you can take off and fly (though it resembled gliding) almost anywhere in the level. You can even shoot out of a canon with the cap on for maximum height. The Metal Cap let you walk underwater, and let you literally be invincible except falling down a hole or something else like that. The Invisible Cap let you walk through some walls, and also let you be invincible to the extent of the Metal Cap. One of the coolest things about the caps though, is that you can have more than one on at the same time. You even have to combine the Metal and Invisible caps in a mission to get a star in Dire Dire Docks!
Mario with the Metal Cap on. Chrome isn't too bad of a look for Mario. Especially with the added invincibility.
A small, but very important part of the game was the lifespan of Mario. By falling from high places, getting hit by enemies, or by staying underwater too long, Mario's health meter would go down. Unless at full power, the health meter will be displayed at the center-top of the screen. It has a total of eight bars, and once they go down Mario is done and you have to start from where you last saved. The replay value of this game is very good. Once it is beaten, you still have three other files you can start all over on to try to beat it again. Unlike most games, replaying this game actually isn't boring. After you've beaten the four available files you'll be begging for more!
Scores
Gameplay: 5 - Long hours of fun and action packed gameplay.
Storyline: 5 - The classic "Damsel in Distress" theme of the game is definitely a plus.
Graphics: 5 - For the N64, the graphics displayed in Super Mario 64 are definitely some of the best.
Sound: 5 - Everything was easier to hear, whether it was the punches, kicks, jumps, and even the footsteps of enemies and Mario alike.
Levels: 5 - The variety of the levels was excellent.
Lifespan: 5 - The eight bar life meter was good, and it being in the form of a pie chart on Mario's head was pretty cool too.
Replay Value: 5 - After beating the game in '99, I still play it weekly and it is still fun.
Though this game is pretty old, I would definitely recommend picking up a copy of Super Mario 64 if you haven't already done so. With it's fun gameplay, excellent graphics, and wide variety of levels you won't be disappointed!
THE GOOD: Puzzles.
Bowser.
Replay ability, which I did 4 times.
Moves.
Suberb Game Engine.
Great Graphics, unless your a spoiled comp. fan.
Plot.
Level Design.
How you can get all the stars and still
not know everything the game has to offer, without a lot, and I mean A LOT of Exploring.
Not too hard not too easy.
Just Perfect.
THE BAD: Nothing really, except ametuers might have trouble with the camera, although I dont.
No Luigi.
SUMMARY: The game is great, theres all the classic stuff crammed into it, like the turtle shell,Ghosts and such. Great and innovative level design, positively enchanting. I had a really great gaming experience with this game, terrain is awesome kind of like in the Snow levels there different kinds of snow and ice and dirt and things like that. enemies are challenging like the giant "Bubba" fish and the Bomb-Ombs. The audio's marvelous, the game play is inspiring, words cannot describe the perfection of this game.
Its just so fun, you can dive bomb unsuspecting enemies, collect the caps, jump in all sorts of easy to remember button and control combinations, the sheer majesty of this game keeps me playing it even today. Also, you can beat the game, or MASTER IT.
you can get 70 stars and BEAT the game, OR you can MASTER the game by getting....120 STARS! Or you can COMPLETE your skills by getting ALL the coins! either way this game is terriffic. Two thumbs ups, Hooray, and lots of whistling is what this game deserves. Go ahead, buy a copy if you like.
You wont regret it, unless you have no appreciation for classics or your just down right ignorant of just what it takes to make a game, a GREAT GAME. This game slightly exceeds O. O. T. although there both good games, believe me you could not give evough praise for such a masterpiece as this.
THE GOOD: Gameplay. Graphics. Audio. Lasts quite a while too.
THE BAD: Not enough bosses. Camera is a real pain in the rear end.
SUMMARY: Lastability: 7/10. You need at least 70 Stars, which takes a fair while, and then you can collect a lot more to get them all, taking ages. What happens when you get them all? Not much, but hey, it's something to do. Graphics: 9/10. For a first with 3D graphics that's going to be on the new system (yeah, we know about Star Fox being the first 3D Nintendo game that is complete), these are pretty impressive. Mario looks like Mario, Bowser like Bowser and Toad like Toad. Sound: 9/10. Soundtrack is memorable and thank god they did a good job here because it is a great one to listen to. Sound effects are also good. Mario's voice is also well done. Actually I thought all the voices (when they existed) were pretty good. Gameplay: 9/10. Simple concept: Go into a painting, get stars, get to the bigger door with the large star, go through a level and defeat Bowser to get a key to enter the next floor. Repeat twice before finishing the game. Don't worry folks, it works very well. Some stars require just finding them, others require defeating a boss, others require winning at minigames and some are just "find 8 Red Coins" (which you can do at the Bowser levels as well). Well done Nintendo. Overall: 4.5/5.0 One of the first and best games on the Nintendo 64. Well worth a purchase. Well done Nintendo!
THE GOOD: Lots of levels, almost all of which are well-designed and fun The puzzles that are required to get each star are just plain fun The fights with Bowser are fun Cool power-ups, such as the ability to turn metal, invisible, or fly Can ride around on Koopa shells. How awesome is THAT? The classic Bowser kidnaps Peach storyline has been used again (overused or not, it still remains awesome)
THE BAD: Some puzzles can be tricky and kind of annoying Camera angles ocassionally screw up, which can get annoying at times Uh...that's about it?
SUMMARY: This game is just full of fun. The ways in which you have to collect the stars on each course are really cool. For instance, there are some races you'll have to do to collect one. Some others involve other cool stuff such as throwing a boss off a platform a number of times, or collecting a certain amount of red coins, and stuff like that. And the Bowser fights are damn fun, too. Simply put, this game is awesome with lots of fun puzzles and fun bosses, and plenty of other cool stuff.
would recommend this game. It is very fun and entertaining, but challenging. It took me six months to beat the game, and I didn’t use any guides.
In this game, Bowser has trapped the princess. The story takes place in the Princess’s castle. Mario must obtain Power Stars to free the princess. There are many enemies that must be defeated. You must beat Bowser a few times and then beat him a last time to free the princess. There is a total of one hundred and twenty Power Stars. There are many different levels, fifteen in all. There is a certain objective in each level and if you complete what you are supposed to do, you will get a star. You can also get stars in levels by collecting one hundred coins. You can also find stars around the castle that are not in the levels. There really are no weapons you can use in this game. By finding a certain amount of stars, you advance to more levels.
The graphics for this game are great. There are two different kinds of camera views, and you can see first person also. One setback is that sometimes you cannot change the camera view. In one level I was having a little trouble because of the camera view. The sound is good too. There is background music and Mario can say some things.
You might want to play this game again after you have beaten it and collected all one hundred and twenty stars. I played it a few times after I got all of the stars. I was so happy when I finally got all of the stars because that was the only game that I was playing for six months.
I would buy it and not rent it because it takes a while to beat. If you rent the game, it’s a waste of money because you will probably only beat like three levels, probably less. This game is one of the best games that I have.
THE GOOD: This game is really hard, so it lasts a while. The music's okay.
THE BAD: It's too hard for me. The graphics aren't that good.
SUMMARY: I never understand what was so popular about this game. I'm so glad I got it used, though, because I still don't understand what you peoples see in it. It's just way too hard. It really annoys me. The graphics aren't that good, either. Toad is just plain scary in this. Bowser looks pretty bad, too. Mario doesn't move right. He keeps sliding off things when I try to stop him. It's annoying. The music's not that bad, though. The music in water areas is good. I can't get very far in this game at all. Either he falls off something due to the possessed controls, or I get stuck somewhere with no idea where I'm possibly expected to find a star. I must admit, though, this game lasts a long time. After around two years, I still can't beat it. I wasn't playing two years straight, but you know what I mean. Bwooha!
THE GOOD: Called by many, "the greatest video game of all time", you've never seen Mario Like this before. 15 worlds and 10 different courses come to life as you immerse yourself in stunning 3D game play. I have to say, I am a fan of Luigi, but this game was amazing. The graphics, the gameplay, the difficulty, the music, the bosses, etc. It was all great and it would take me a whole year to say how great this game was.
THE BAD: Nothing. It's one of the greatest games of all time so how can there be any bad involved?
SUMMARY: This game is a true classic and this game really solidifies the name Mario and this game really makes the name Mario stand out. This game has everything you possibly imagined in a Mario game and I just believe, this game was remarkable and one of the best games to this day.
THE GOOD: all the different levels, whcih are unlike any of the other levels, so you dont get bored.
THE BAD: ummmm, well there are some frustrating levels which are quite hard, but bring 'em on!
SUMMARY: super mario 64 is a classic game, which is about mario being summond to princess peach's castle to have some cake. within that time her castle has been taken over by bowser and his men. mario has to jump into different paintings which somehow have a wierd different land in each of them. he needs to get the stars in each level, to be able to open other rooms with more stars in. once getting 120 stars a canon opens where mario can get access to the roof where another surprise lies. the levels of Mario are really well thought of, including a snow level an underwater level, a ghost level, a mountain level, a rainbow ride level and even a clock level. its defently a game worth having because its quite addictive once you get into it. along with great graphics, and fun loving music, this game is one of the best to come out of N64.
THE GOOD: + 3D adventure + Freedom to rome the lands + Big replay value
THE BAD: - Its a old game - Graphics are good but too todays standerds ...
SUMMARY: Super Mario 64 was the first EVER real class game to play. Coming out when the Nintendo 64 was created i was only a little boy and i thought this game was great.
It was the first ever major good game cos Nintendo 64 and the Playstation were the first main consoles to be realesed. And Super Mario 64 was out of this world.
As you probably know by now you are this little man with a red cap. He is on a mission to defeat the evil Bowser and win back his beloved Peach [how sweet]. He can kick and punch aswell as doing backflips and can jump all day long During you treck you go through 100s of levels and hours upon hours of gameplay. This just shows how much effort was put into the creating of this game.
Okay about the game. You have to rome this huge castle looking for portraits which you jump into [abit weird i know]. Then when in the level you have to collect stars. If i remember correctly there is 5 stars in each level and you have to do all these weird and wonderful things to get them. Like racing penquins or just beating the bom-bomb at the top of the hill. Also throughout the game you can get hidden stars which could be in a level or outside a level.
In the game you will also be abel to unlock some extra missions at some time. There is a total of 3 missions where you can unlock a colour block. The blocks are red, blue and green and they are all caps and each do a special thing. The green cap when caught will turn mario into metal mario and you will be able to sink into the water, the red cap can make mario fly for some time and the blue cap lets you move through walls ectra. Without these caps its impossible to complete the game so make sure you get them.
The graphics arnt brilliant in this game but they dont need to be as the gameplay is all you really need. The graphics are up to Nintendo 64 standerds so they are not too bad. Soundwise its okay with too. Its abit annoying on one level when you are trying to catch a penquin and it never shuts up but most of the sound is okay.
When i say this game is good i really do mean it. With hunders and hunders of levels i cant see how people can get bored of this game and this game to me is still one of the best.
Verdict
This game is still one of the best in my opinion as its just SOOOO good. And soon im sure i will make this review alot longer as there is so much to say.
