Playing through the All-Stars version made things a lot easier. I still haven't played through the game without using warp zones or saves, but I have completed every world dozens of times. On 6/27/09 I beat the BS Super Mario Collection 3 remake.
This was the first video game that I ever owned; got it during Christmas of 1991 with my NES. I still own the same game cartridge and console that I got back then, and both work perfectly. The gameplay was solid with excellent graphics (at the time) with a well rounded cast and a world map, allowing-to an extent-what level would be chosen to play. I would have beaten this game sooner, but I cracked my left clavicle during the February Vacation in 1992. I missed playing this game and my bowling league for three weeks until it healed; my arm was in a sling for the whole time.
I don't remember what my high score was exactly, but it was in the range of 1.5-1.7 Million. It's been so long I would have to play the game again just so I could have a high score to post, but I have finished with more than 90 lives before.
