Great graphics and sound, but some poor AI knocks the overall score down a point or two.
Gameplay: This game was run under Windows 2000 (doesn't say it supported it on the box).

The gameplay is, in a word, involving (if you want it to be). The beauty of this game is that you can take over manual control at any point for any of the positions. One second you can be dropping bombs on the target, the next you can be attacking the formation in an enemy fighter. There are five main parts to this game, fighting off enemy fighters from the bomber, flying through flak, bombing the target, defending the formation in a fighter, and attacking the formation in an enemy fighter. I found I spent most of the time flying through flak and shooting the enemy fighters from the bomber. The only thing that lets the game down is the poor AI when it comes to flying the plane. It quite often flies planes in the formation into each other, or even into the ground. The superb atmosphere makes up for this though. Be prepared for long missions - even with time skip, one mission can take 45 minutes or longer to complete. A lot of this time is spent in flak or defending the formation. If this game had been released as a multiplayer (as it was originally intended to be) it could have been one of the most popular flight sims on the 'net. Shame on the marketing people for forcing the release of the game without this support. It's a crime against humanity !!! I found myself actually caring about the other planes crews. I was saddened as my short-lived elation from shooting an enemy plane turned to horror as I watched it crash into a nearby plane, taking the bomber down with it to a watery grave in the sea below. I also caught myself (on more than one occasion) counting the crew's 'chutes as men bailed out of stricken planes. It's not often I get emotionally attached to anything - let alone a computer game !!!

Graphics: Excellent plane models and effects from fire, smoke etc. A flat landscape dates the game, but since you are spending most of the time at several thousand feet, this is acceptable. Lovely smooth framerate on my machine.

Sound: Great ! I particularly liked the flak.

THE GOOD:
Good Grafx.. I like the "hands on" control of different aircraft also! A regular flight can keep you very busy! Hours and hours of fun! (which is interrupted by shear CHAOS intermittently) You'll be wanting to kiss the ground IF you make it back!

THE BAD:
There's really more good than bad in this game. However, there are a few problems with installing the game..(hint: Make sure your sound and video drivers are up-to-date) it'll make it alot easier on you. Also besides the install problem.. the AI (artificial intelligence) can get a little "Bossy" when changing views. Example: You might be trying to land in "manual" mode then want to change to an outside view and the game will kick it back in "AI" mode that's when the "AI" may decide you don't need to land or may bring you to the ground in a very Un-Safe landing if you know what I mean.
And Last but not least ... the Norden Bomb sight.. has good control however, it seems that it may be missing a few controls..( I don't know what the REAL Norden bomb sight looks like but it just seemed to me that there would be more to it.. go figure)

All in All it's worth the trouble!..It was a great game in it's infancy (with the first DOS version) and has matured nicely with the "Mighty Eigth" edition.

SUMMARY:
I think I've tooted my horn enough

Oh ! one thing!...it plays great on a 900Mhz computer! with a AMD ATHALON Processor!

THE GOOD:
Excellent graphics and sound, takes a while to get use to all the buttons and to know exactly what to do, making the game more interesting.

THE BAD:
The training missions should be more detailed in what buttons need pressing, and it should help you with the what you should be doing, and i found it took a while to assign all the buttons to make it faster to get to them.

SUMMARY:
Overall an excellent game for anyone. Though little kiddies might experience great difficulties.
