THE GOOD:
Great immersive storyline with carefully developed characters, requires sound tactical reasoning, brilliant graphics, plenty of hours of play.

THE BAD:
Sometimes a little easy, identical strategies can be applied to multiple missions, the game characters are not always introduced, weapons could pack more meat!

SUMMARY:
Hardcore strategy gamers will adore this game. The limited number of units you can use at any one time means real strategy is required, none of that "produce a thousand tanks" rubbish. An extremely clever story and suberb graphical realism make for a very involving experience - when it's snowing, you really feel cold. The units are very much geared towards specific roles and learning to use them effectively is an art. You have to select an appropriate crew member to control each vehicle and you can become surprisingly attached to them (even though the crew themselves can't be killed).

On the off-side, the missions can sometimes be a little too easy. Once you've found a combination of units that work it tends to work in every mission. In addition the carefully created characters that crew your units are not always introduced with a cutscene, and the manual doesn't even mention them, which is silly because each crew member is supposed to have an area of expertise that you could do with knowing about. The method of introducing the early crew members is to show a written background while the mission is loading, so if you have a fast computer that loads the missions quickly, then you don't have time to read the background...!

If you like a game with a story (like me) then you'll love Hostile Waters, if you like building armies and bases then you probably won't like Hostile Waters. Gamers who enjoyed Ground Control, Dogs of War, or Homeworld will enjoy Hostile Waters.

THE GOOD:
Excellent interface for controlling all of your attack and recon vehicles. Simple to use interface and command interface allowing multiple commands and therefore excellent flexibility for individual playing styles.

THE BAD:
This game is demanding for those unfamiliar with multiple strategic command intefaces. It is fairly difficult to keep ontop of everything at the beginning.

SUMMARY:
As is usual with these kinds of games, the learning curve becomes the driving force behind playing the game. The more you learn about controlling what you build, the more you want to learn about the possibilities open to you. Destruction, demolition, air supremecy, land domination and general "beat the enemy" scenarios, drive you on to complete your missions.
I can stop playing it myself, and many hours of pleasure are still ahead.

THE GOOD:
Storyline, graphics, sound & structure of missions.

THE BAD:
Sometimes a little hard to know what to do.
A little hard to match AI persons with correct veicle

SUMMARY:
From the moment I heard about this game (which has roots way back to the age of Amiga) I knew it had to be good. There are only SO many really good games nowdays - but this is one of them!
What i like most is two things:

1) For once you (the player) have a story worth fighting for. It is well written and told in a very appealing way - not unlike a graphic novel. The table is turned; the world is NOT a bad, dark and cynic place. It has survived and created something good out of it self. BUT not all like this new brave world. Some need the old ways back....

2) All missions are story driven in a nice clear way.
You advance slowly but surly as you visit one island after the other. This game has a structure that gives you action and tactical elements without swamp you like most RTS-games. Almost all enemies are event-triggered; they do not react unless you are spotted or attack. Naturally the enemy do act on it's own and send choppers and stuff at you, but only to keep you at you toes. The real fighting occurs when you enter uncharted terretory on each island.
This means you can take your good time and make different stuff in the mean time. You do NOT get overly stressed and can make good tactical moves when you need to. The fact that you can not use to many units at a time also contributes to this nice pace.

All this combined with very good (and fast) graphics and equally good voice overs makes Hostile Waters a big winner in the long run.

There is no multiple player mode (or online) and this can be a negative for some persons. But the single campain is so well constructed that the game still succeeds in delivering good value for money.

In short: A well crafted modern (and better) version of the old "Carrier Command" first seen on the Amiga platform.

A good buy!
