THE BAD:
Everything else sucks.

SUMMARY:
Definitely do not spend your money or your time playing this game. It tries to be the best of two worlds and winds up the worst of both. I mean strategy and tactics. The game encourages you to think at the strategic level offering a host of technologies to research, asteroids to explore, ships to build etc. But it also wants you to do the tactics. Should I attack this ship from the top down or from the rear behind the thrusters? Shold I use lasers or missiles? I know it may sound good but in order for you to have the time to devote to the tactics of each encouter the game handed over a lot of the strategic commands to the AI. In order for you to have time to devote to strategy the game handed a lot of the tactical commands to the AI. But the AI is stupid. You wind up playing a hands on game in a hands off way becuase the things the AI is doing are the things you want to be doing. You feel in the end like you have very little control of anything. The game just frustrates you to know end and you wind up quitting. The nice graphics and cool plot between missions isn't enough to carry the game because the game play sucks.
