THE GOOD:
- Extremely customizable.
- Possible to use your own resources for the whole game.
- Plenty of default resources within the program to start with.

THE BAD:
- Takes a lot of digging to figure out everything due to lack of explanation on everything.
- Requires a load of scripting knowledge to make your game fully custom.
- Default battle system is stupid.

SUMMARY:
RPG Maker XP, as everyone may know, is a program used to make your very own RPG game. You are able to have your own characters, your own maps, your own stats, your own weapons, your own story...anything. The only thing the program doesn't have is your imagination. RPG Maker XP is an extremely useful and very addictive program. However, for beginners, this may not be the case, at first. There is a Help section within the program, but it tells the obvious stuff, and it does not go into detail of the stuff you really need to know. Lack of instructions on what everything does makes the program pretty confusing from the beginning. With enough determination and testing, you'll be able to surpass these problems rather quickly, figuring out what everything does.

Aside from scripting and extra resources, you're already able to customize your game in a large variety of ways. Characters, story, maps, music, weapons, skills, leveling up rate, enemies, you name it. The amount of things in the program is downright amazing. In fact, even a game without all those extra resources and scripting can be really well done. The downfall is the battle system. Scrapping side-view and switching over to front-view just doesn't seem all too innovative. Just seeing artwork of your characters at the bottom and artwork of the enemy up top isn't very engaging. To make the classic side-view again, you're going to have to do a lot of scripting.

Scripting is where the real meat of the program comes in. If you are a good scripter, you can make your game just about anything you want. You can have side-view battles, real-time battles, and shooters...and even go down to the most simple of things such as better menus, enemy HP bars, different types of text boxes, anything you could possibly want. To do this though, you'll have to be good at scripting or search down other people's premade scripts. All in all though, this adds much-needed depth to the program that the other RPG Maker programs simply did not have.

Default resources not enough for you? You can have your own graphics and music in the game, if you wish! Upload character files, music, pictures, maps, animations, sounds, etc. This means you can have an endless warp of resources, and make your game fully custom, if you want.

Once you get past the lack of explanations, your imagination can do the rest. The program can get a tad bit tedious at times, requiring even the most specific of details to be correctly inputted, but with enough determination on your part, you can easily make a fantastic game. The program is for both beginners and experts alike. It's only sixty dollars, which makes this quite a wonderful deal.

THE GOOD:
Vast resources.
An excellent Add-On to the already awesome RPG Maker line-up.
Simple to use interface.
Good results.

THE BAD:
Costs a fair bit of money.
Relys on Scripts alot, not many peoples favourite thing there.

SUMMARY:
RPG Maker XP allows the simplest of people make a perhaps vast and exciting Role-Playing Game within an hour.

As soon as you open it up, there are millions of possibilities available to you, enough resources to keep you happy for a while, a large amount of pre-installed scripts to you don't need to add any unless you choose too and a dead-simple interface that even the common fool could manage!

RPG Maker XP is the direct sequel to RPG Maker 03, and it's everything but worse than it. It's better, contains easier functions, better and bigger possibilities and quite frankly, awesome.

At the price of $60 USD and Ł34 in the UK, this is an extraordinary deal. Bearing in mind if you use your own resources and everything you use to make the game is your, you have legal permissions to sell the game worldwide! But that, unfortunatly, would take years to do, so remember to practice!

The simple layout of features and the interface allows you to do work, and have fun at the same time, its even possible to make your game online!

There are many outside things that work with RPG Maker XP, you can get scripts that allow your KeyBoard and Mouse to work in the game, you can as said earlier, put it online and many more.

THE GOOD:
Much better graphics than previous versions. Smoother game-play on finished projects. Has some features the old versions couldn't handle because of new technology. I like how easy it is to post the games made with this program onto the Internet for others to play. The new Final Fantasy type battle system is great and very well put together. I'm pretty sure that there are more characters and enemies (heroes, civilians, monsters so on and so forth.)

THE BAD:
Much less options than previous versions. Relies more heavily on scripting. More difficult to create a game EXACTLY as you want it.In other words the game is a little harder to use. The program would be a little better if you could just make a 1000x1000 size map and use all of the scenery in the software on that map to create sort of like a GBA game.

SUMMARY:
Overall good but it has its fair share of downsides and turnaways. I'd say it's a good buy. I am having some trouble with this version because I am horrible at scripting and with a game making program relying so heavily on scripting I would definitely have problems. My favorite thing about the RPG maker series is that overall it does not rely too heavily on scripting, heck in the other versions you couldn't even access the script. Most of the RPG maker games out there such as Sphere require you to be a master scripter just to create the most basic games. The scripting feature however is usefull. I have too many scripts in my game so now whenever you try to play the game it says failed to load scripts. like 4000 lines or so in the game debug area.

THE GOOD:
-Better Graphics than previous versions
-New Features can be added through RGSS (a scripting language based on Ruby)

THE BAD:
-Some features from previous versions removed
-Games created have a resolution of 640x480 (but can be expanded by scripting)

SUMMARY:
Here's a brief introduction for someone who has never heard of the RPG Maker series before:

RPG Maker is a program which you can use to make Final Fantasy style RPGs.
Here are some of the tools in RPG Maker XP:

-Character Editor
-Item Editor
-Map Editor
-Monster Editor
-Monster Group/Battle Editor
-Animation Editor
-Status Effects Editor
-Resource Editor for importing your own graphics and music

The graphics have also greatly improved since the previous versions, and there are alot more tilesets to choose from.

RPG Maker XP features also has a script editor (further information below) for creating scripts. But it's possible to make a game without ever even needing to add/changing a script. Therefore even people that don't have any programming experience can make RPGs with RPG Maker XP. RPG Maker 2003 (the previous version) did have more options for non-coders though.

A great new addition to the series is the abilty to change the core systems with the use of a scripting language called RGSS (Ruby Game Scripting System) which is based on the programming language used to create RPG Maker XP itself, therefore many changes can be made to the system.

The only drawback is that RGSS can be hard to learn, since there's only a small amount of english documentation. This is because RPG Maker XP was never officialy released outside of Japan. (Even though illegal translations are available for download.)

Conclusion
RPG Maker XP is a great tool for anyone wanting to make his/her own RPG and RGSS makes the possibilities almost endless. The only real flaw is the removal of some features that were present in previous versions.

THE GOOD:
It has vastly improved graphics over previous RPG Makers and the animations couldn't be smoother. A scripting engine is also included, which is good for people who can code, you can also import .JPG and .mp3 files now.
You can now have rolling fog and clouds over your environments.

THE BAD:
It doesn't have a many features as RPG Maker 2003, you have to code them into the engine, You can no longer use facesets without coding it into the engine.
There aren't that many resources available for it yet.

SUMMARY:
Overall, it's a great buy and it looks great, but it relies to heavily on scripting and this may make RPG Maker 2003 look a better option for non coders, however, if you can code with RGSS (the coding language for RPG Maker XP) the possibilities of what you can do with your RPG are virtually endless.
