THE GOOD:
- A cool, fun Sonic racing game
- Nice looking environments, with more than one part of travel (shortcuts, etc); loops and springs are fun; level exploration is fun when you feel like doing so
- A few fun characters to race as
- Some characters can use their speeding up turbo attack, where they curl into a call, spin, and launch forward
- A few items to use
- Various things to do in the races, other than just race the other characters, such as collect rings and emeralds
- One unlockable map and a few unlockable characters; collecting special coins unlock character races, and collecting all the emeralds unlocks Super Sonic (my favorite part of the game)
- Changing weather is pretty cool, and has different effects
- Controls are alright
- You can run into other characters and even run the course backwards
- You sink in water, which is realistic; it is good to see that you cannot stand or run across it
- The game came as a package with a few other Sonic games, for a low price

THE BAD:
- Not enough maps to race on (4 at first, 5 total)
- No story pretty much, though that makes sense I guess
- Not really any differences between characters, or at least not much of noticeable differences
- Too easy
- Game is way too short (only a few hours to beat 100%)
- A few more characters would have been cool
- Character turbos do not last very long
- Takes awhile to get to the darn menu to save the game
- Occasional lag
- Racing gameplay too slow
- Not enough modes of gameplay

SUMMARY:
Like my title, the game is fun for about an hour or two, but then it is over because there really isn't anything to do. There are a few game modes to play, the main one being the actual racing mode. You basically just run around the course with your character, which will not last long because all the courses are really small, and try to win. The environments are somewhat cool and can be explored, and weather affects them all in different ways, but there are just not enough maps to race on. 5 in total.

There are not that many characters to use, but the amount we get seems fitting. Some are fun to use, but they really do not differ much from one another, other than appearance.

There are a few unlockables, such as a few characters and one map. These are obtained by getting 1st place in all the races, collecting all the hidden emeralds, and collecting all the Sonic coins (and when winning the challenge races).

The hardest part of the game is the character unlocking races. You need to use every shortcut in each races to beat the challenger and unlock them for use.

All in all, the game is kinda fun for a short amount of time.

THE GOOD:
Great Graphics.
Awesome Maps.
A Great Character (Super Sonic).
Cool Secrets
Decent Controls.

THE BAD:
Eh... Having problems running it on Windows 2000! Bummer. (I/O Addressing Issues or something like that)

Too many dumb characters. (Kinda trivial to me though)

SUMMARY:
This game is a great example of a racing game for the PC with every-body's favorite character... SONIC! Definately better then the SEGA Saturn version. I guess, after looking at other reviews by different people, they must have a bad taste in their mouths from the Saturn version. I think the PC version is more cleaned up. : )

I take it that SEGA had some good tricks up their sleeves with this game. The Super Sonic character is the best character with great traction AND speed. Ok... you have to unlock him though, but it's sure hell worth the trouble! ; )

It certainly is worth digging in a bargain bin for to play... however you may need to play it on an older system or on Windows XP with a special Sonic R workaround in order to play it at all. It seems strange to me, but I'll let it pass despite such a limitation. My rating is based on game-play and not the compatibility.

Thanks SEGA for a good game!

P.S. I think Tails Doll is freaky to me.

THE GOOD:
Different style of gampelay compared to other Sonic titles. Good variety of racetracks. Excellent music & sound effects. 2 player option. Hidden characters to unlock.

THE BAD:
Poor graphics. Very bad performance on slower PCs.

SUMMARY:
A totally different Sonic game than others, this one attempts to make a racing game out of the franchise. It actually is quite good, with several different tracks and a variety of familliar (and not so familiar) characters.
The graphics here are, for a PC title, exceptionally poor, especially if you have to run the game on low-res mode. The pixelization is just horrible and there's virtually no detail-everything appears blurry. If you're running a PC with anything faster than a 300 processor, this is not an issue but if you're stuck with something like a 150 or so, you'll be unable to run high-res or it'll be ultra-slow. The sounds & music are pretty good-each song has it's own rock song complete with vocals, and the sound effects come right out of other Sonic titles. Turn the music off if you've got a slow PC, though, because it does affect the game's performance.
The controls are more like a racer than a Sonic title-each character has different strengths & weaknesses and simply going fast will not always win races. They're also a bit more complex than other Sonic titles-you can use a joystick but the keyboard is highly recommended. 2 player play on the same keyboard is possible but a real workout. Gameplay is also enhanced by hidden characters plus having to find Chaos Emeralds to complete the game and unlock the secrets, plus ring collecting to get in-race shortcuts.
If you've got anything but a bare-bones PC that just makes minimum requirements to run this game, it's a good pickup if you're a Sonic fan. If you've got the minimum, you'll have to make some compromises but it won't prevent you from giving this a try. Another decent bargain bin pickup.
