PS2  Resident Evil: Code Veronica X Review by MLD 5.0

This is the first Resident Evil game for the PS2. And it was the first game for me to play on my PS2. I wanted a good game to come out to provoke me into buying a PS2 and this game was it. I wanted a great horror game, and I loved the earlier Resident Evil games for the PS1, and I knew that this game wouldn't let me down.

There is plenty of action and scary moments in this game. You need to be smart and plan your attack wisely. The puzzles are fun to do, and not too hard to figure out. The bosses are unique and can be hard unless you have the right weapon/ammo. There was only one small complaint in the game and that would be the character Steve. He's the kid in the game who thinks that he's Mr. Badass. But he isn't. Let's just say that what happens to him in the end of the game was funny to me.

I have a love for the Resident Evil games that goes back to my Playstation 1. When I bought my Playstation 1, my first game was Resident Evil 2. After playing that, I bought the first Resident Evil and every other game after that. So, when I need to kill some zombies I can pop in this game and go to town. That is until Resident Evil: Online comes out.

Presentation
This chapter of the Resident Evil series stars two characters that would be familiar to fans of the series. Chris and Claire Redfield. And the setting is outside the town of Raccoon City, which is a fresh start for a new game. There are zombies, and dogs from the earlier games, but there are also some new interesting bad guys to fight too. Even a character from an earlier game, (I'm not going to say who, but once you see him……..you will be shocked.) makes an appearance as a boss. The entire story from start to finish was great to play. I just hope that the next Resident Evil game is as fun as this one was. 10/10

Graphics
The levels look very clean and the sections that are in the dark look nice as well. The zombies look scary and the rest of the creatures are impressive to look at too. There isn't any lagging in the flow of the movements, which is good. Even where there are several zombies onscreen. 10/10

Sound
The music sets the mood greatly. The sound effects from the weapons puts you in the mood for killing zombies! Or maybe it's just me. I really love weapon sound effects. And the groaning from the zombies makes your skin crawl. Even the small detailed sounds like footsteps and doors opening are cool to hear. 10/10

Gameplay
It's like your basic Resident Evil game. The controls are easy to learn. And the weapons are fun to use. There isn't a ton of ammo or health so you have to be conservative with them. Which makes the game more challenging. You can't just waste ammo and get caught by zombies and not worry. You have to make your shots count and not get cornered. 10/10

Lasting Appeal
For me, this Resident Evil game felt like the longest game in the series to finish. It just felt like a long game. When I thought the game was over in the airplane fighting the boss, it wasn't. I still had several sections still to finish. And I liked that. I wanted a long zombie game to play and this one delivered. After playing it through once I wanted to play it again since the story was so interesting, and funny in some parts. 10/10

THE GOOD:
Excellent crisp graphics, atmospheric and eerie locations, and pretty damn scary monsters.

THE BAD:
Sometimes confusing, and Steve Goddamn Burnside(for the first part, anyway)

SUMMARY:
In-Depth Review: Graphics:4.9/5 Easy scorer. The graphics are incredible. They're extremely crisp and easy-to-see. Such a shame this game didn't have a PAL/NTSC selector, because the whole full-screen would have suited it a lot. Controls:2/5 Very frustrating at most times, especially in the first encounter with the Bandersnatch monster, where if you needed to turn around, he would hurt you dangerously before you could face him. I give them a two, however, simply because they're easy to get used to, especially if this is the first Resi game you've played. Characters: 2.5/5 Bad, but not awful. Claire Redfield is a little shallow and seems to be cold and robot-like, when they could have made her a little better, or at least changed somehow. And so we come to him. Steve F***ing Burnside. I wanted to turn those Lugers around and shoot him with them when he stole them from the palace. However, my opinion of him completely changed when that sequence during the Bandersnatch battle played, and he executed a (very very Matrixesque) jump through glass to kill the monster. His voice acting reminds me of Shadow Of Memories' Hugo Wagner, and I hated Hugo's voice. Music: 4/5 I'm giving it a 4 because what I paid attention to was very haunting and creepy, and I keep coming back to the Bandersnatch's first battle, but especially your fight with him. The violin effects are good. What I say about paying attention-it's because I was too fixed on the puzzles of Resi, another strong point. Puzzles/Gameplay: 5/5 Frustrating, but games like this aren't supposed to be easy. People who complain about difficult puzzles shouldn't play games like this, because it's obvious from the outset that there will be puzzles. It's part of RE. You can't have Resident Evil without the difficult puzzles. People expecting this should turn away now and find another game to play, perhaps Die Hard or something similarly boring. And Finally... Story: 4/5 Haunting and strange. The relationship between Alfred and Alexia was obvious from the outset, from where the movie played of them with their faces dangerously close together. One thing got me, though-Alexia said she wanted to be 'like a dragonfly'-well why is Alfred pulling the wings off the dragonfly? Maybe it's a metaphor...meh. I don't know. Anyway my overall score is 4.8, and if you disagree then tough.

THE GOOD:
Fairly good graphics
Not too long not too short
cool storyline
Claire owns
Challenging unlike most games
Addictive

THE BAD:
Some crappy camera angels especially if a monster is in the corner
Shortage of amo
not much though this game owns!

SUMMARY:
When I first got this game it took me a while to get used to the controls but once you get the hang of what your doing its addictive. I ran through most of the game in a breeze except for a couple parts where I had to go through and do it again since I was attacked by a hoard of enemies at once and there was nowhere to run. Also the amo problem is okay IF you learn to master the combat knife..the trick is to slash the zombies on the knees and get them to fall down and then once they are down slash them like theres no tommorow so they won't get up. Its either a hit or a miss...if you've never played residents evil before or arent a fan of horror games you might not like it.

THE GOOD:
Good graphics, a great variety of monsters/enemies, a good deal of bosses, cool weapons, and nice character designs.

THE BAD:
Some bad camara angles, holes in the story line, and too much puzzles.

SUMMARY:
Well, it looks like that Capcom had introduced another great RE title. Resident Evil: Code Veronica X has a good amount of monsters/enemies, from the well-known zombies, dogs, and hunters to new monsters like the albinoid, super zombies, and new tyrants.
There, however, always the bad side, which include a few holes in the story line (it doesn't affect the grand scheme of thing), a few bad camara angles (like the one in the Ashford Mansion where I can't even see the zombie), and way too much of those annoying puzzles. Still, as I said, with all the faults, this is still a great RE title on the PS2, a must buy for RE fans.

THE GOOD:
The Graphics are amazing, the story is good.

THE BAD:
The enemies are to easy, Final boss Alexia was easier than anything.

SUMMARY:
From the start this game seemed very hard, but as you carry on it gets easier. The graphics are brilliant, the enemies were well created the Bandersnatch was the best, but to easy. Overall this is the perfect game for anyone who thinks there good at all of the other Resident Evils, this will test you.

THE GOOD:
Good graphics, good gameplay and a nice variety of weapons

THE BAD:
As with other resident evil games the controls are dodgy, just not as good as resident evil for the game cube and it can be very tricky at times.

SUMMARY:
This is a good game in the resi series but not the best. Eeverything about it is pretty bog standard resi and while this isn't a bad thing it tends to make it very unoriginal.

My advice is to go buy resident evil for the gamecube.
