"While the simple structure makes it compulsive, it also leaves it unsophisticated. While theres a few variants, most fights take place in the same few arenas and feature the same objectives, i.e. kill everyone with your sword in a crowd-pleasing manner. That your financial rewards are linked to how much you show off length of combos, number of dodges is the closest that Colosseum gets to another Good Point."

"Colosseum has a few fun moments, but they're mired in dull hack-and-slash gameplay that isn't compelling or rewarding enough to make the game worth playing."

"Colosseum: Road to Freedom works diligently at recreating its own version of Rome and the gladiatorial lifestyle, but when it comes down to the action itself it underdelivers. The fighting can be deep, but it can also be very awkward and frustrating. With some better graphics as well as a more fluid and intuitive system, this would've been a much more interesting title. As it stands, most of the elements remain as good ideas that could've been, but didn't."
