THE GOOD:
- Interesting storyline.
- Fun, entertaining gameplay.
- Detailed, atmospheric graphics.

THE BAD:
- Far too short.
- Pretty much linear, aside from secret missions.
- Lack of music.
- No variety in enemies.

SUMMARY:
This is my first ever review, so please bear with me.

Storyline: Basically, you play as Dante - a half demon, half human private investigator of the supernatural. His father rose up long ago to defeat the evil emperor Mundus and his horde of demons, in order to save humankind. Now Mundus is back, and Dante must wield his father's sword as well as his two pistols to defeat Mundus and save humankind from extinction. Of course, it goes deeper than just that, and there are minor plot twists, but they're pretty easy to guess at once you start playing. I think the storyline is a bit lacking personally, and it could've been done better.

Rating: 6/10

Gameplay: Devil May Cry is a third-person hack & slash action game, and you are able to obtain many various weapons to take out your enemies. These weapons range from pistols and grenade launchers to fire gauntlets and alternate swords, which have various moves that you can purchase by obtaining red orbs - dropped by monsters and found at various locations. You may also purchase other items, such as increased maximum life points and extra continues.

As you complete each mission, you are given a rank which is determined by the following:

- How fast you beat the mission
- How much damage you received
- The difficulty level you're playing on
- Fighting style
- How many support items you used
- Secret missions

Yes, there are secret missions in the game and sometimes they're rather hard to find. As for the fighting style, that is determined by combos. Obviously doing more drawn-out combos that give you "Stylish" remarks will result in a better ranking.

Aside from all of that, there is also a "Devil Trigger" gauge which fills up as you attack and lets you transform into demon. In this state, you are able to use special devil trigger-only attacks, regenerate, and gain increased speed and strength. Of course, you remain a demon as long as you still have some power in your devil trigger gauge.

The two problems I had with the gameplay - there isn't much variety in the monsters/bosses you face, and the game is far too short. It can easily be beaten in less than half a day on Normal difficulty.

Rating: 8.5/10

Graphics: There isn't much to say about the graphics. I think they were pretty good. I mean, the environments were not only detailed, but they also captured the atmosphere very well. I have nothing to complain about.

Rating: 9/10

Sound: The soundtrack for the game is somewhat good, but there isn't much background music in the game. Not enough to notice at least. There is voice-acting in this game though, and it's fairly well done. It's better than most other games with voice-acting, in my opinion.

Rating: 5/10

Replay Value: The replay value for this game isn't all that high, but it's not too low either. There are many things you can do in this game after you beat it. Each time you beat the game on a different difficulty aside from Easy Automatic mode, you unlock something. If you beat the game with the Normal difficulty, you unlock Hard mode. Each mode after that unlocks a secret character until you beat the game under the hardest difficulty - Dante Must Die mode. As for what you unlock then, you must find out on your own. Also, you can set challenges for yourself - such as get a S-rank on all missions (which unlocks something), beat the game without using any items, or beating the game without using the devil trigger, for example.

Rating: 7/10

Conclusion: I'd recommend a rental, since you can likely beat the game fairly quick; but if you really like it and want to try the more challenging modes, then buy it. It's a really fun game. It just didn't do much for me.

Overall Rating: 7.1/10

THE GOOD:
Graphics
Action
Combos
Devil Trigger
Bosses
Difficulty

THE BAD:
Camera Angles

SUMMARY:
Dante...A half human half devil dude who's the son of Sparda..the Devil. Extremely cool, calm and collected Dante has the same sex appeal as Fonzie but the fighting technics of an acrobat combined with Arnold Swarznegger.

He wields a sword and 2 Pistols which he uses to slice and dice all foes that encounters him. He pulls of astonishing moves that you won't see in any other game. My personal favorite is when he uppercuts the enemy with his sword and then juggles them in the air with his pistols. Awesome to see and easy and exciting to pull off.
If he kills enough enemies he can turn into a full breed devil known as Devil Trigger. He then becomes stronger, faster, increases health and gains the ability to fly.

The bosses are also astounding and each have an original way of killing them. My personal favorite boss would be Phantom, a huge spider that spits fire. The only way to defeat it is to get on his back and hack and slash at his weak spot.

Basic foes range from what look like Puppets on a string to a Panther. The Puppets are easy to kill and are also the most satisfying to kill as they can be easily juggled in the air with your weapons.

Dante is extremely agile and can jump to high places, do flips, roll on the ground, run up a wall, jump across huge gaps and many other moves.

The graphics are pretty good too for it's time, however DMC uses the usual fixed camera which is kinda annoying when trying to jump gaps cos you can't see where he's jumping to.
It does have stunning locations. All feel very Gothic with grand architecture.

It's not a very long game, however it can be difficult for the novice gamers, especially near the end.

All in all DMC is a game that can be enjoyed by all, whether you like action games or not, you're bound to love this.

THE GOOD:
- good graphics
- great sound
- finally. something that didn't take eight minutes to make.
- I found this for £5! Bargain! It's worth £50! Well... it should be.

THE BAD:
-Running around for one thing when I realised I already had it. 1 hour wasted.
- Bit annoying that enemies respawn.
- Nightmare... say no more.
- Mundus. cool but it should of been harder.

SUMMARY:
Worth buying, but short, very short. Some more detailed explanation would be nice. I didn't find out that Nelo Angelo was

*SPOILER*

Vergil, Dante's brother

*END SPOILER*

until 2 years passed. But... VERY GOOD while it lasts. The Phantom was good, and I enjoyed battling Nelo Angelo a lot. The Griffin was annoying though, and the swimming sections... well I'll save it for parties shall I? *doggy paddle, and well... he could go a bit bloody faster. He is a bloody devil after all*

I give it 9/10.

or 94/100.

or 4.7/5.

PS2  Outstanding first outing for Dante 4.8

THE GOOD:
Cool weapons and moves
Dante Must Die mode provides an excellent challenge
Good replay value
Dante’s cool and cocky attitude
Classic game

THE BAD:
Might be too difficult for the casual gamer
That’s it really

SUMMARY:
This game originally started out life as Resident Evil 4 but was changed into the game that we all know and love. This game is probably one of the best ones on the PS2 to date. The main character, Dante, is a half-devil and is the son of a legendary dark knight called Sparda. 2000 years ago Sparda defeated the evil demon ruler Mundus and locked him away. But now Mundus is back and it is up to Dante to stop him.

The whole game has a Gothic feel to it with the buildings and interiors coming across as older and grand. The visuals in this game are not the best in the world, but they are plenty good enough to convey what it’s trying to get across. There are 24 levels to the game and involves solving numerous puzzles and riddles as well as killing all the monsters in your path.

All in all there are only 9 different weapons in this game and not the largest variety of moves but that impacts little on the actual game. You start off only with a simple sword and 2 trusty pistols but you gain access to more powerful guns and swords as well as a pair of fiery gauntlets. These are far more powerful than the weapons you start off with. But the real power of Dante starts to show at the end of level 2 when you get the Alastor sword. (How you get it is unique in itself!) This weapon puts 3 runes at the top of your screen. As you attack enemies the runes will light up. When all 3 are lit you will be able to turn into your demon form (commonly referred to as devil trigger) which will cause you to deal more damage, use special techniques and slowly regain health. Mastering the techniques available only in devil trigger is the key to beating a lot of bosses and certainly in the harder modes.

Throughout the game and at the end of each level you have the opportunity to buy techniques and items. The currency in this game is red orbs. You can obtain these by destroying enemies and breaking certain objects. In a level when you come across a Statue of Time, this is the place to spend the orbs. If you don’t find any, don’t panic as you can spend them at the end of every level whether you find a Statue of Time or not. Examples of items are ones that increase the number of devil trigger runes, increase your maximum health and one that allows you to continue when you get killed.

Another thing that adds to the character of the game is the stylish ranking. When you attack an enemy a word will appear in the top left on screen. If you can carry on the attack then your ranking will get higher and higher ending with a red “Stylish.” If you can kill an enemy with a high style ranking then you will get more red orbs from them. It isn’t a major part of the game, but one that bears mentioning.

If you manage to beat the game on the Dante Must Die mode you will be rewarded with Super Dante. This is basically Dante but with infinite devil trigger. This is one of the best rewards I’ve ever seen in a game and this allowed me to use attacks I’d never bothered with before because I judged them a waste of devil trigger. But beating Dante Must Die mode is a major task in itself and will take longer than the previous two difficulties put together. The variety of enemies you fight range from agile panther-like creatures to a giant fiery spider. Each enemy has a weakness which, on the harder modes, you will need to learn how to exploit.

This game does get exceptionally tough at times and on Dante Must Die mode you can be required to fight for up to 10 minutes flawlessly making only one or two mistakes in that time. Therefore this game might be a bit too hard for the casual gamer. That is really the only criticism I can think to make of this game because it is that damn good. Also if you aren’t a fan of violent action games this will also not be for you.

But even if you are only remotely interested in action games I’d recommend you get this one.

THE GOOD:
Everything from the graphics to the storyline. The engine is easy to use. The combs are killer. Hell even the music is alluring. I honestly don'y see much wrong with this game.

THE BAD:
Only thing that bothers is the fact the all the missions are in the castle but i understand that it's essential for the storyline so it's acceptable.

SUMMARY:
From the beginning to end this game just captures you. All it's elements produce a great game. A lot of people have complained about the difficulty but it's the challenge that makes it all worth it. I think the storyline and the characters are what most contribute to the whole experience. Capcom has started a saga that will live on for a long time. I must say the graphics are dazzling, smooth animation and movement. The engine itself is sick not to mention Dante's various combos, each with their own element.

PS2  Austin never Cries...baby 3.9

THE GOOD:
Gameplay is addictive, scenery is effin' gorgeous

THE BAD:
Story had potential that went nowhere, dialogue sucks, voice acting is mediocre, enemies only look cool later in the game.

SUMMARY:
AGH. I now have learned to hate the Devil May Cry series, based on its cheasiness and ability to overwhelm so many simple minds and make Capcom that much more wealthy. In any case, I am forced to recognize that the abilities players will have to kick the crap out of animate and inanimate objects is one to reckon with, something the sequel seemed to take a notch down. As far as graphics go, DMC has some great backgrounds and architectural designs going for it. As with most Capcom games, some textures on the ground or other areas will appear a bit blotchy and pixelated in bulk, but there are also a lot of textures in the game that are flat, and rely on environment lighting which works really well given the scenarios.

Story had a lot going for it, but in the end DMC hams up too much of the simple things, and totally ignores what could have been finer points, that would have distinguished the series as something as more of a twisted take Vampire Hunter D, meets Resident Evil, meets Castlevania, instead of the Resident Danger Powers D it ended up as. (As for the Austin Powers Connection, put it this way. Dante's connection with his women are a sad mockery of James Bond films, and of course, S ranking everything will unlock the cheesy line, "Yeah, Devil May Cry, Baby!"- something totally NOT worth the hours and hours I spend hoarding items to play the insanely difficult DANTE MUST DIE, DIE I SAY, DIE! mode.

Learning curve is about fifteen seconds. You CAN mash buttons, can't you? However, it is safe to say that those of you that are not so aesthetically pleased by simple button mashing effects, can create some really [i]groovy[/] mayhem and chaos using Dante's arse... hehehehehe... senal. (sorry, too much DMC caused this brain to shrink a bit)

At some points the music is cheap and generic, at other points it takes itself seriously and you can't help but think at that point in time, that the game is more than it really is. (Until it's over of course)

Still, a classic nontheless, even if only because it was better than it's sequel, and also is fun for those that adore violence, as well as being the one game responsible for the new 3rd person hack and slash genre that went as far to inspire games like Drakengard, and Castlevania.

PS2  Devil May Cry 4.8

THE GOOD:
- Incredible gameplay, very fluid mix of sword and gunplay, with some acrobatics thrown in aswell.
- Good graphics, somewhat lagging now, but still one of the better looking games on PS2 by a long way.
- Excellent enemy design and animation.
- Excellent range of moves and attacks, ranging from sword uppercuts to hurling fireballs.
- Dante: the badassest game character ever.
- A genuinely challenging game.
- Great soundtrack with a nice mixture of gothic and haunting classical and rock.

THE BAD:
- Cheesy voice acting.
- The camera can make things tough for you.
- Somewhat short.

SUMMARY:
Gameplay:
This is where the game is at its most ridiculously flamboyant best. Acrobatic double jumps and rolls, lethal sword play and brutal fist fighting all balanced out with a good dose of shooting and blowing things up. The control system makes the gameplay very easy and enjoyable, as it is very intuitive and easy to pick up. The combat is undoubtedly the high point of this game, and the excellent 'Devil Trigger', where Dante's half demon persona is unleashed with furious thunder or fire elemental attacks is sublime. Hugely enjoyable and exciting. Also, the enemies are genuinely challenging and will push your skill to the limit, especially on the extremely hard 'Dante Must Die' difficulty level.
It's also nice that the intense combat is divided by esploration of a lavish castle surrounding and a small amount of 'puzzling'. Though its not going to push your IQ to the limit as it is mostly just simply finding a key, or a soul, or a sword (or something similarly creepy) and unlocking the door with it, its a nice break from the intensity of the combat, and it keeps the battles fresh and exciting.
Graphics:
Very nice visuals in this game, that at the time o release (nigh on 2 and a half years ago) were amoung the best. Still visually stunning, but compared to its sequel and many other games on the market the graphics have been surpassed. Nevertheless, the elemental attacks are accompanied with stunning lighting and visual effects. Also, this game still showcases one of the most effective rain scenes and really gives you a sense of the environment you are battling through. The lighting effects are very good, and are demonstrated when nightfall comes and the gloomy passages are illuminated by the strange rock you have found. The bright light washing over the walls as you run around is very cool.
Story/Characters:
Seemingly a matter of personal opinion, as many people I have spoken to think the storyline is utter trash, but I think its really cool. True its the cliched Good vs. Evil battle, but on such an epic and gradeur scale as the Legendary Battle between Dante and his nemesis Mundus - who cares?
Dante is (as mentioned above) the badassest character ever, and have a very cocky attitude and very cheesy dialogue, though it just adds to the flamboyant nature of the game. Other significant characters are the mysterious Trish, the woman who invites you to Mallet Island where the action of the game takes place, who bears a haunting resembalance to Dante's mother. Also there is the chief of Evil, the prince of Hell; Mundus, who you are seeking out throughout the whole game, wiping out each of his four Generals one by one, which eventually culminates in an epic battle in the depths of Hell.

Overall:
Overall this is a fantastic game, that will genuinely push your gaming skill to the limit, as the hardest difficulty is immensely hard. The gameplay is exciting, fast paced and addictive, and the visuals are still impressive for such an old game. The only real shortfalls I can think of are that the game is quite short, and unless you are really devoted its not that likely you will push yourself to completing Dante Must Die mode, so unless you are a gamer who relishes a challenge, you may struggle to get your moneys worth.
But anyway, in conclusion; if you don't already own this game go buy it now!

THE GOOD:
Great graphics, the coolest main demonic character ever, pretty cool music too, ranging from the super cool eerie hall music to the battle themes!! Great adventuring space too.

THE BAD:
It took me a while to complete, but maybe its a bit of a short game?

SUMMARY:
Dante, a man with demonic blood and son of Sparda runs a business, in which he takes on jobs. One day, a mysterious woman named Trish confronts him...one job may just save the world from an army of darkness...

Devil May Cry is one of THE best action games I have ever played.
The game is set in a nice dark and lonely castle, infested with devils and monsters. More fun for us...^_~ One of the beautiful parts of this game is the controlling. Its so easy and fun, you get used to the buttons and weapon combo attacks in no time!

Which reminds me...the weapons. Oh, the wonderful, violent, blood-sheding weapons. There are two types, Devil Arms (which vary from swords to things like Ifrit Gloves) and...guns. However, this is one of the few games with guns I actually enjoy handling!!
There are also a ton of upgrades (attacks) you can buy for Dante's weapons. The currency is 'Red Orbs', which you get for kickin' devil BUTT!!

The atmosphere in this game is one I have only ever experienced with the game 'Shadow Hearts' however, the feeling for this game is slightly different...can't quite put my finger on it, but....Gothic games just seem to put a warm, fuzzy feeling in your murdering, twisted soul dont they?

Anyhoo, the setting in this game couldn't be better. A lonely island far from civilisation, with a big lonely castle, a colisseum of darkness and more...you feel right at home. ^_~

And so, if you love gothic games, beating the evil heck outta things, and a nice, simple but touching storyline, Dante wants you! XD *shows picture of Dante in Uncle Sam pose*

THE GOOD:
Good graphics. Plenty of diffulty modes to unlock.

THE BAD:
The camera it ruins the game

SUMMARY:
I bought this game after a friend recommended it. I was really disappointed. Whats wrong with this game is simple: the camera. It swings around annoyingly when you move around, its unstable and as a result the combat in the game suffers as a result. Boss battles highlight this problem. You could be fighting an enemy without it even being in view cause the camera is so naff. This means you may often be fighting blindly. The controls feel unresponsive at times but this may a result of the camera. It would be much better if you were able to correct the camera using the right analogue stick to show you what you actually want to see. The camera problems annoy me to such a state I dont rate this as a great game. Which is a shame because it could have potentially been one if not for its problems. Chaos Legion is a similar game which comes to mind to compare this with and if Devil May Cry had similar camera controls to Chaos Legion (which albeit has its own problems) it would be a better game. Bottom line is it doesn't
