PS2  Evil Dead: A Fistful of Boomstick Review by MLD 5.0

You can call this 'Evil Dead 4' if you like. Since the game has a great movie style to it. It could easily be set up to go after 'Army of Darkness' if you used the movie without Ash going to far into the future. We see Ash talking to an old man about his situation (You understand who the old man is in the end) and then we see Ash in a bar having a drink. Metal hand, boomstick, and the clothes are right from 'Army of Darkness'. On the TV is the Professor and a newswoman (Sorry, can't remember their names). And the Professor begins to read from the Necronomicon, and if you are an 'Evil Dead' fan you know what happens next.

The town is now taken over with Deadites. And Ash is the only one to save the people and the town itself. But it's not going to be easy. He'll have to find different items and artifacts in order to complete his mission. And traveling through time will also make things difficult for our hero. But when the battle is finally over we see Ash in a place we really wouldn't expect. Unless you are a fan of the movies then it seems logical. The ending to this game is great! And it sets up another game to continue from it. I just hope they decide to make another 'Evil Dead' game for the fans of the movies and for horror game fans.

Presentation
You really can't be bored with this game. There is plenty to do. And if you are a fan of 'Evil Dead' this game is perfect. If you are a fan of horror games and don't know what 'Evil Dead' is about, then I'd say this. First rent the three movies (Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness) and then rent or buy this game. You can appreciate the game more if you understand the plot and know the character a bit better.

It has a 'Resident Evil' feel to the game. Going to place to place, needing to find an item to use in order to proceed to the next area. But there are a lot more Deadites in this game than Zombies in any 'Resident Evil' game that I've played. Health isn't an issue if you use it wisely. And ammo isn't a problem either. But if you use your health or ammo a lot in the game you can just kill some Deadites and they will drop health/ammo for you to use. And there are spots in the levels with these items as well.

I think the time travel aspect of the game makes it interesting. Since you get to see the town where you start from in different time periods. You see it from the start, in two different older time periods, and then in an apocalyptic future. Sure they might seem the same, but you'll have to find out where to go on each new area. Since they are not mapped out the same way for each time period. 10/10

Graphics
For having so many enemies on screen without no slow down is great. And some levels can have a lot of enemies. Like around 50 or so in one of the Arcade levels. To me the levels and the characters seem very clean. No jagged lines, or cheesy looking creatures. They look like they should for an 'Evil Dead' game. Even Ash looks very well for his image. And they sure like to use blood in the game, especially the weapon that uses blood for ammo. It can get messy in some fights. And the Chainsaw impale is awesome to use and to watch! 10/10

Sound
To be able to hear Ash say tons of 'One Liners' is pure sweetness! Bruce Campbell is a funny guy and when he's in his character from the 'Evil Dead' movies he the best. I actually wrote up a list of all the 'One Liners' that I heard in the game. I think that it's a complete list, since I played the game a lot. Just to hear him make fun of the Deadites makes this game worth it. Also, the weapons have a cool sound to them. And Ash has several weapons to use in the game. I like the screams that the Deadites give when you kill them. 10/10

Gameplay
This game is really easy to play. It won't take you hours to understand the controls, which I enjoy. Just load the game and start taking out Deadites. You travel through time chasing after the Professor and his Deadites. You get to meet some of Ash's relatives which is cool. And you get to know a little more about Ash in the game. But being able to kill a ton of Deadites is the games funniest moments. Especially using the 'Boomstick'. My favorite move is the behind the shoulder boomstick kill. I laugh all the time when I see that move. It is my favorite scene in 'Army of Darkness'. Anyone who loves the 'Evil Dead' films must have this game. And trust me……It's a lot better then "Hail to the King" for the PS1. 10/10

Lasting Appeal
After playing the game once, you really don't need to play it again. Unless you are a huge 'Evil Dead' fan like me and decide to play it four times. And that's in one week! But of course I made my 'One Liner' list from the last two times playing the game. Also there is the Arcade mode which has 30 levels to play. You get grades for finishing the level in the amount of time allotted. I have 29/30 levels with a 'A' ranking. For the life of me I can't get an 'A' for one level. I can't do it fast enough! And the "making of" video is funny to watch. 10/10

THE GOOD:
Great game, nice weapons too. Cool landscape in levels. Love the dark gimmy feeling.

THE BAD:
nothing

SUMMARY:
As a fan of FPS or FPF games, this game is pretty fun. It's got a lot of violence and blood in it.

The graphics of this game is relatively good.

The game control. Camera swings out of controla bit but nothing too harmful.

The sound is alright. An okay soundtrack.

The levels are kinda long and some of them are really hard to figure out.

The Good:
great enemy lock-on system great weapons, behind the back shots, cool combos, just like state of emergency but with a story, a better combat system, and one-liners spouted off by the main character.

The Bad:
no jumping, crouching or diving(while not really needed, it would feel better if you could). I would also like some double pistol action for fast killing.

Definitely worth the $20 when compared to non-greatest hits $20 games. If you remotely like state of emergency or really like Onimusha(it's really like a combination of the 2) you'll like this (and it's theme is of a non-serious resident evil-type game). the game is a lot harder than I've heard, and once you get into some real constant action late in the first level, this game is really, really fun. I'm looking forward to Ashes to Ashes(the sequel coming in Nov. 03) especially if it's $20 I'll buy that sight unseen right away if it retains the same game engine(or a slightly improved one). and go rent evildead 2 or army of darkness if you haven't seen it, it's the best horror-cheese movie made to date.

THE GOOD:
good looking cinemas, challenging at times, alot of weapons(that are upgradeable)very fun lock on system

THE BAD:
graphics could be a lil better, repetive enemy movement and camera is alil shaky at times

SUMMARY:
its not a bad game,it feels alot like state of emergency but polished, its rele alot of fun 2 rip into enemies and the game can get extremely hard at times.the camera can get ya a lil frustrated as well, especially with multiple enemies or in corners but fans of the movies will eat this one up and anybody else will have fun with the missions that make ya think as well as hack n slash into deadites lol.there are a few extra modes in the game like, arcade and there are galleries 2 unlock as well,so this game has moderate playability.this game is pretty damn new and i bought it for 20 bucks brand spankin new,and i think it was way worth it
