THE GOOD:
Unique battle system, terrifying atmosphere, personal photo albums, realistic ghosts, terrific storyline.

THE BAD:
Character running speed & maneuverability.

SUMMARY:
By far, Fatal Frame is one of the tops for Scariest Game Ever right alongside Silent Hill and Alone In The Dark.

First, it has the most unique battle technique I've ever seen. I've heard some people complain that a camera is a "stupid weapon", but there's a limit to the entertainment value of firearms when used in frequent repetition. I've not seen a game like this that uses something as original as a camera with spirit powers. You've got completely 3D first-person POV control of it, not to mention the ability to create your own photo album showcasing your favorite shots. It also adds to the terror of battling ghosts, because it's like you're seeing the action through your own eyes. The controller for the shutter is realistic too, because it's used with the R1 button, which is where the switch on a real camera would be.

Second, the graphics are very crisp and the animation on ghosts and live characters alike are great. The sound quality is even better because all the ambient noises will keep you on your toes. The most terrifying noise in the game is the cinema-style thump thump thump when an attacking ghost is hot on your trail. The background detail is also nothing to sneeze at, and every tiny movement will make you wonder what may be coming at you.

Third, the story is enthralling, and based on a true tale from a mysterious mansion in Tokyo. The story FMV's are brutally graphic, making you itch for more as the story progresses.

Other than Miku's painfully slow running speed and the occasionally aggravating lack of maneuvering space, this game is an asbolute gem. This title belongs in any survival horror fan's library and is worth every penny.
