THE GOOD: - Mindblowing graphics - Tons of fun racing tracks - Makes full use of sound effects and music - Fun to play single player, and also with friends - Tons of fun and nice cars - You get hooked instantly - THE ultimate driving simulatorTHE BAD: Maybe you'll get bored of it if you beat it a million times and then a couple more.. maybe. SUMMARY: When i first played this game, I was shocked. Knowing the Gran Turismo series and knowing that this game was going to come sooner or later, I was expecting something great. Fortunately, it was a lot more than that when I finally got into it (which was immediately).
Okay first of all, the graphics. I just want to take the time right now to say that the graphics look real like no other game. It seriously does push PS2's graphics to a totally new level, because not that many games will have these kind of graphics in them for time to come. Other than that graphics, the sound is amazing. The music while you're racing really puts you in the mood for racing, and its fun to listen to anyways. Next we move on to the gameplay. Like the last Gran Turismo game, this one also features a lot of cars. If memory serves me correctly, then I believe its over 700 cars or something of the sort. That says how much fun it is going to be just to collect the cars and actually get the chance to race them all. GT4 promises lots and lots of hours of trying to finish all the races, since there are also quite a LOT of races that you have to complete; some from GT3, and some new ones as well for more fun. If you're a loner and you're used to playing games by yourself, or even if you play a lot with your friends, this is the game for you, no doubt about it. Its hard to find something wrong with this game since the wait we had tow ait for it seems to prove that the wait was worth it, because its just flawless.
Wether you're a racing fan or not, I really suggest that you get this game as soon as possible, because its just the complete package. The best racing game I've ever played in my life.

The Drive of Your Life | 4.6 0 comments |

A game that bills itself as "The Real Driving Simulator" has a lot to live up to and boy does it.
Intro
Gran Turismo 4 is, without a doubt, the most realistic driving game available to buy at the moment on any platform. The way in which the cars handle and behave is identical to how they would in real life. Polyphony digital recreates superbly the feeling of a car's tires gripping the road. You'll be seriously un-nerved when you hear your car's tires squealing as you fly round the Nurburgring Nordschliefe, you'll turn in your seat as you try to force your car round the corkscrew bend at Laguna Seca, and you'll clench your butt cheeks as you try to drift round the tight hair-pin bend at Monte-Carlo. The handling of cars really is incredibly realistic, there are dirt, snow and wet races, all of which dramatically affect the way the car handles, as they would in real life. Gran Turismo 4 puts you in the driver's seat, for real. You will never experience a more realistic driving experience. At least not until Gran Turismo 5.
Graphics
Moving away from driving realism, which is perfect, a lot has to be said for the graphics. I have not seen graphics as good as this on the PS2 before. You'll notice impressive reflections on your car which move as the environment around you changes. You'll screw up your eyes as you go through the straight at Trial Mountain as the sun beams at you realistically through the treetops. You'll be amazed the first time you see the snow and ice circuits which look truly amazing. The detail on all the cars is painstakingly accurate. Gran Turismo 4 pushes the PS2 to its graphical limits.
Gameplay
The gameplay is nothing short of excellent. As previously mentioned, the driving physics are fantastic and will keep you coming back. But the main thing that will keep you coming back for more is the simple fact that there is just so much to do. There are so many races to win and so many cars to collect. There are over 700 cars, with the only noticeable absentees being Ferrari and Lamborghini. Porsche are in the game, but only as RUF, a German tuning company which modifies Porsche's. There is a lot of diversity in Gran Turismo 4 as well, it is not as repetitive as previous installments. There are the challenging snow and ice races to go with the rally and wet races in the Special Conditions hall. There is also photo shoot mode which is an interesting change. You can take any of your cars to a breathtaking location and photograph it from any angle. You can also pause any of your saved replays and take photos. If you have an X-port or Maxdrive, you can transfer your photos onto PC and show everyone at neoseeker if you so wish. Another impressive thing is the number of real circuits from around the world which have been added for this game. These include the terrifying Nurburgring Nordschliefe, but not as it is in Project Gotham Racing 2. This is the proper Nurburgring. This is the track which hundreds of people have died on. All 12 miles of it. It is narrow and uneven, just like in real life (and unlike in PGR2). It has been perfectly recreated in all its glory for your pleasure (or terror). Other real tracks are: Circuit de la Sarthe (the circuit which stages the annual 24h race which is world famous), Laguna Seca, Cote d'Azur (the famous Monaco grand prix circuit), Tsukuba circuit, Fuji Speedway, Twin Ring Motegi, Infineon Raceway and Suzuka Circuit (the track where the Japanese Grand Prix takes place). All of the tracks from Gran Turismo 3 make a welcome return too. Hate them or love them, the license tests also return. They are a little different this time though. There are 16 tests for each license and they are all slightly easier than before. Some of them will still have you pulling your hair out. It's relatively difficult to get all bronze on each test but if you are going for all golds then you are definitely in for a tough ride.
A few things are still wrong with Gran Turismo 4 though. There is still no car damage, meaning you can fly into a wall at 230 mph and carry on racing. Or you can use the walls to help you round the circuit too, safe in the knowledge that it won’t matter if you’re the rear end of your car smacks into the wall. The AI has not really improved either. The computer-controlled cars seem to follow the same line all the time and they’re also pretty stupid, they act is if you are not there, dopily shunting you from behind. This starts to get annoying if you’ve slowed down for a hairpin and a stupid driver speeds into you from behind causing you to go skidding off into the gravel.
Sound
Gran Turismo has very impressive sounds, you will hear real engine sounds, each sound unique to the car from which it came and the same as it would be in real life. The level of detail Polyphony Digital have gone to is incredible. There is also a good soundtrack, which despite not being very varied, is still quite enjoyable. Rock and Indy fans will love it, but others would probably rather listen to a CD. The soundtrack includes artists such as [i]Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs, Feeder and The Hives. The music during the game menu is the traditional "Gran Turismo Style" piano jazz which has become the norm for Gran Turismo games.
Summary
An excellent game. There are a few things still wrong with it, but you will forget all that when you first start racing. This really is an awesome game. My advice: Go out and buy it now.

THE GOOD: The attention to detail is fantastic, 700 cars, 50 tracks. Graphics and gameplay are fantastic.THE BAD: Once again no car damage and I find it leass of a challenge this time. SUMMARY: When GT3 was released in 2001, a few months later speculation was already gathering for the imminent GT4. Rumours and expectations were flung from all directions. 3 years on it was to be finally released but then delay after delay came until 11 days ago on March 9 it finally graced the gaming shelves of Britain. GT fanatics lept with joy as they were finally given the ability to take it's little white case to their local spotty shop assistant and redeem it. Well, has it lived up to it's expectation. Yes!. But for one or two emissions or mistakes here and there, this is driving heaven. With 700 cars it offers such a vast choice that no one can fail to find a car they love. From RUF to Daihatsu, the roster of over 80 manufacturers is quite mind-blowing. Add to that 50 tracks ranging from city courses, world circuits, original (made up) circuits and dirt and snow tracks. The player will find teriffic realism as they drive round perfect replications of real circuits such as Laguna Seca, Nurburgring, Suzuka and Monaco. Welcome to i'm sure for GT2 fans is the return of the high-speed ring and autumn ring tracks. As usual the game offers a licence centre where drivers can hone the skills with tests designed to test the most experienced driver. New to the game is "photo mode" where you can take a car from your garage and take a picture of it in a location of your choice. Locations range from the seventh wonder of the world- the grand Canyon to Times Square. Once you've taken your pic you can print them off using a USB cable. The other new mode is B-spec where you can direct a race with such actions like overtaking, pit stops, stratigis etc. This will help you in the challenge of an endurance race where you may not want to race the entire thing yourself. Of course though, in such a huge game there has to be one or two bad things. For one your a-spec points tally is completely worthless. It seems to be only for pride sake. Polophony Digital appear to have made an emission with this mdoe and have forgot to add in a purpose for earning these points. Another is the usual factor of car damage. It is still not there although to the happiness of many fans, the makers have been saying it will be in GT5, but how long will we have to wait for that. But let's not let these minor errors take away from a still fantastic game which betters GT3 by a country mile. A truly incredible game which needs to grace anyone's game collection. Buy it. |

THE GOOD: There isnt anything GOOD about this game. Its absolutely amazing.THE BAD: Your kidding arent you? SUMMARY: Absolutely 110% astounding.I bought the game last week after waiting what seems like a lifetime for it to be released.Other driving games eg Underground-need for speed are just awful compared to this.If you dont buy this game then you are missing out on the treat of a lifetime. It takes 750 characters to describe this game, its simply 749 to many. The attention to detail the cars, the whole experience is so far brilliant.GT4 is a driving simulator for those of us who like to become involved in the experience. Its simply not enough to just simply steer your vehicle and go for it,Underground was a silly arcade game which was easy.GT4 requires you to have cars that are specifically tuned and customised to win individual races after having studed racing lines ,tracks etc.Without doing all this you simply wont win races. An example of this was a championship i completed yesterday. In one race i didnt think to change the tyre type from racing to sport.6 laps into the race, and leading the field, my rear tyres gave out and i ended the race in last place |

THE GOOD: Everything about the game is amazing.THE BAD: The wait times and delayed releases other than that pure perfection. SUMMARY: Cars, cars and more cars. Their is so many different car brands to chose from and with the addition of "classic" cars to the list makes for an incredible game. Including the addition of trucks finally!!! Not to mention the increased detail of the tracks. The tracks from the old game look spectacular, I didn't realize that they were the same thing. The added time it took for the game to be released was worth it overall. The way of buying cars creates a synthetic sense of going to the car dealer and buying it. I also like how you must buy a used car which is accurate in real life. This game is 10x better than the last one and I really am not to fond of racing titles my self. But this game, I think, hits perfection. Go out and rent it at least if not buy it. |

GT4 US Version | 4.0 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Graphic, Physics, Drive Force Pro support, lots of classic cars from around the world. Prize cars with Bronze medal licenses... This is a huge game, should last for month!!THE BAD: Some bugs for example, the screen jumps once in a while. No qualifying or testing with in the specific race menu. Useless things like B spec and Photo Mode, should have been better to add qualifying or testing to it. SUMMARY: My first impression of the game is that the physics resemble the actual physics of a real car even more than with previous games. I noticed that hard to drive cars are more drivable, and good handling cars are not as good compare to GT3. The difference in handling from a front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and 4 wheel drive can be notice but you can adapt real quick to them (front wheel drives have more understeer than before, but respond much better to braking, while rear wheel drives have less oversteer).
One thing I noticed with the braking is that is more sensitive than before and you do noticed when you are braking to hard.
Using the Drive Force Pro is a blast, the wheel respond incredible to the Force Feed back. Drive driving through the LeMans straight at 230 MPH you can feel the pain...! Every bump on the road...! That part only worth at least 30 of the 50 bucks that I pay for the game.
On the down side, I don't understand what is the idea of the photo mode. You can take photos and all, but I don't see a point. There is no relation to the game play at all. Unlike NFP U2 that the photos for the magazines need to be earned.
The same applies for the B-Mode. I tried once and the car came up last, way last, and on a race that I won twice with the same car...
My biggest disappointment has been finding BUGS... After a year and change... The game has BUGS...
Once in a while the screen shudder. You can't remove the USB connection for the DFP because the game crashes. The same happens with the Memory Card. May be is my PS2... but never happened with any other game that I have.
My overall impression is that it is a great Driving/Racing simulation. Most have in your PS2 Collection and Most have if you are serious about racing simulations.
And lastly, the overall experience is indeed enhanced by the Drive Force Pro wheel. Even with the known issue with the issue with the Pedals, the 900 degree turn ratio of the wheel do add to the challenge and to the overall feeling of this simulation.

Gran Turismo 4 (Japanese version game review) | 4.9 0 comments |
by tediboyv from Hayward, CA, United States | Feb 2, 2005 |
THE GOOD: - 700+ cars in one game! - Excellent graphicsTHE BAD: - Ferrari & Lamborghini aren't represented here. - As in previous GT's, there's no car damage. - No online mode. SUMMARY: Whew! I was finally able to play this awesome title. Imagine, I waited almost two years to be able to play this game! The opening FMV is really beautiful, but I'm pretty sure that the U.S./U.K. version will have a different sequence, as seen with their previous Gran Turismos.
The following is my preliminary review since I still haven't unlocked any goodies out of this baby yet. I'll revise this review as I get through with the game.
Concept: 5/5 Who would argue with the game's concept? 700+ cars in a driving game is a racer's gaming heaven.
Gameplay: 5/5 The best driving/racing game on the PS2 (and the envy of other consoles) just got even better. The controls have been tweaked to an almost perfect level. It's really surprising what Polyphony could come up with. One of my previous faults of previous Gran Turismos is the "bump-them" overtaking techniques. Not any more, overtaking takes a a lot more planning than ever, thus super concentration.
Graphics: 5/5 The car models are as gorgeous as ever, each car now with 4,000 polygons apiece! The excellent broadcast-quality replay mode has also been beefed-up and will have you checking the TV trying to convince you that what you see on screen are the real thing. It is also noticeable that there's a greater amount of detail in some of the courses without sacrificing the quality of the car models.
Audio: 4/5 The sounds of the cars are as detailed as ever. I played this game connected to an average Hi-Fi system, and it sounded great. For this Japanese release though, I'd have to give it a rating of 4. The U.S./U.K. version could replace some of the so-so music tracks here. Good thing the most of the licensed music tracks are very good.
Value: 5/5 You'd be playing this game for months to come. 'Nuff said. Cool
Overall: 5/5 No doubt about it. It's the mother of driving/racing games (with or without the car damage or on-line mode). Buying an original copy is really worth it.
Well, I gotta play this game again.
If only I could understand the Japanese text... Well, the U.S. release is coming, and boy am I still excited! |
