Here's another long one from your pal, SOZF.

Madden 2001

You might ask why I’m doing a review for ’01 and not ’02, or ‘03. Well, I’ll tell you why. I don’t have ’02 or ’03 I have ’01. Also, the two aren’t very different. Anyways, this game comes from the folks at EA Sports (it’s in the game). And…you’ll find out more about it below.

Graphics

This game has some pretty nice graphics. If you slow down stuff, you might see the occasional pass through and stuff. Not too bad. The faces look pretty good. This isn’t like FFX F.M.V.s or anything, but it’s still nice graphics.

Sound

Well, we’ve got commentary from John and Pat as usual, which, as usual, can get on your nerves after a while. But guess what? You can turn the commentary off! YAY!!! Yeah, you can adjust the game sounds (ugh I just got tackled!), the commentary (boom, he went right in there!), and the crowd noise (boooo, bad call, ref!). There’s a little rap kinda song at the intro. Not good, not bad. It can be pretty brief. EA did well again.

Gameplay

Okay, this game is obviously a football game; getting its name from the former coach and current football announcer John Madden, with his sidekick Pat Sumeral. There’s a whole bunch of plays, and different plays for different teams, e.g. West Coast offenses have a different set of plays then umm…other offenses. You can access plays two different ways: 1. Pick a formation, then a play from that formation 2. Pick plays by whose special play it is, if it is designed to go to a certain receiver, it will be under that player’s name. The rules are just like the rules for football like they were in 2001. Yeah. New to the series is the instant replay challenge thingy, which basically sucks. You can’t just challenge a play, the only time you can ever challenge a play is if the player is really close to stepping out of bounds, then you get the option to challenge it or not. Just basically, the challenge thing is better off not there. No plus, no minus. There are 4 different difficulties to chose from: Rookie, Pro, All Pro, and All Madden. Rookie is what it sounds like, just do it when you’re starting off. One thing that I don’t like, which only really happens in All Pro and All Madden mode, is that a wide receiver with both of his hands out will miss the ball when it is thrown right to him, while a cornerback or safety will dive and catch the ball with one hand. But, hey, it’s the harder levels; it’s supposed to be hard.

There are various things to do for Gameplay. You can just practice plays over and over again, go through a season, have an exhibition game, or do career mode (where you can draft college players and stuff. Fun times). There is of course, a nice create a player mode.

Madden has also got these cards now. Yeah, I guess Pokemon influenced everything. Anyways, you get these Madden Points for doing stuff in games, the harder stuff you do and higher difficulty it is, the more points you get. When you get 100 points, you can buy a pack of Madden cards. Some cards will boost the stats of players for a little while; others kind of let you cheat. Like, giving you a 5th down or them only 3. You can also get cards that unlock teams from years ago. Super Bowl teams from certain years.

Control

Basic. While the game is loading, it’ll show you some of the controls. The controls are pretty straightforward; you’ll learn them fast. And you can always pause the game and access the controls from the menu. Nice feature. I can’t exactly list all of the controls, but as I said they’re pretty easy to learn.

Overall Recap thingy mo-bober (is that a word…?)

Graphics- Good, not spectacular, not horrible, just good. 8.5/10
Gameplay- Fun times. Lots of stuff to do. You can play coach in career mode, drill your plays, and lots of good stuff. 9.0/10
Sound- Isn’t perfect, but isn’t horrible or anything. Got all the options so you can’t really complain. 8.5/10
Control- Easy to learn, easy to do, blah blah blah, 8.7/10

Average- 8.675/10, about a B+

Overall grade- 8.8/10 B+ Great game. And stuff. I’ve already recapped.

Recommendation to fan of genre- If Madden ’03 or ’02 are looking a bit too expensive, get this and you’ll be pleased. It’s a great game.9.0/10

Recommendation to non fan of genre- Well, if you don’t like the genre then that’s probably because you don’t like football. So, you probably wouldn’t want to get it.

THE GOOD:
Amazing graphics, real plays, wicked soundtrack, loads of players, teams and stats. Perfect in every department, except...

THE BAD:
...Madden's commentary. Sure the game might be named after him, but come on, just listen to him, or don't as the case may be, some of the stuff he says is already obvious.

SUMMARY:
Amazing game altogether especially when you add in the Madden challenges and Madden cards, which make the gameplay even more fun. But as I already said Madden's commentary does leave a lot to be desired (he's great in real life but on the game he says things that are already obvious).I.e he says "the reciever dropped it there" about 5 seconds after the reciever has just dropped the ball. But apart from that the game is perfect in every way. I'm English and like a typical Englishman I didn't understand anything about American Football, but thanks to Madden I could explain most of the rules of American Football to my stupid Soccer obsessed classmates. ( No offense to soccer fans, as long as they like other sports)

Overall an amazing game with a classy look. Definetly worth the £18.99 it costs in England.

THE GOOD:
WHOOO-HOO!This football game has great graphics, great gameplay, great everything!

THE BAD:
What? You're asking me for the downside?Uhm...not really,no.Hey,did you see that Sixers/Lakers game the other night?

SUMMARY:
UNE-DAH-BAAAAH!Perfection!Beauty!People getting shoved head first into astro-turf!I'm telling you, when I first played this game,in real-life,I fell out of my chair with the first tackle.I thought I was REALLY being tackled!Oh my god!Read "The Good",above. That pretty much sums it up.Chose your teams, and go at it!Franchise mode kicks it.season mode kicks it.You get those funny little Madden cards that unlock special teams(Like the Mummies, the Monsters, the Sugarbuzz) that are really goofy looking and fun to play. Now,if we could just get John Madden to quit saying the obvious to us in the game,we'd be set."The quarterback got it there!""And the reciever dropped it!"Thank you, john,I can see quiet well that Marvin Harrison dropped that pass...

THE GOOD:
Madden2001 for PS2 has great game play and an extensive playbook selection. The replays are unmatched, which is great because the animation is fantastic.

THE BAD:
Not many things are wrong with the game aside from occasional BSP and bounding box issues. Even those are barely noticable.

SUMMARY:
A good buy. Even better if you recieve it as a gift.

THE GOOD:
Graphics, gameplay. Almost like watching a real game of football.

THE BAD:
Madden makes some stupid comments while playing. Other than that he does a good job.

SUMMARY:
Gang tackle. Grass in helmets. Emotions. This game has it all. They even talk trash. Must buy for the sports fanatic. Music by Xzibit, Beatnuts, and others makes the game that much more fun.
