THE GOOD:Most of the game is amazing to be honest, while it does have several glaring flaws the good outshines the bad.
1. Taking down something big always makes you feel powerful.
2. You can spend 10 minutes just looking at the screen, admiring how cool you look in your armour.
3. Challenging quests.
4. Plenty of armours and weapons to choose from.
5. Many different weapon types such as guns, great swords, and lances.
THE BAD:
Here are the bad parts of the game:
1. Spotty hit detection.
2. Your hunter is slow as hell.
3. Some monsters annoy you to the point of hurling your controller through your screen.
4. You CANNOT pause,AT ALL.
SUMMARY:
Monster Hunter is one of those games that is grossly underrated,, yet has a dedicated fan base that will probably never stop playing it. At first you start off as a total noob, with no armour whatsoever and a crappy sword. However that will soon change, when you fight newer monsters and get to carve off parts you unlock new armour and weapons, some of which look totally awesome and some which will shame you for life. Speaking of which, getting a full set of armour and equipping all the pieces at the same time will give you skills, some of which are crappy and some of which are useful like attack boost.
Now, onto the core of the game... questing and hunting monsters! When you start off the only quests you will be able to do are 1 star quests which are all gathering quests that send you out to find and deliver items. Basically this is a boring tutorial and you just want to get it over with. Don't let it fool you, this game gets fun fast. After a while you start hunting monsters, eventually you will hunt and kill your first wyvern ever and you will feel totally awesome and powerful.
Now it's onto tiny bits of good/bad information about the game. The game has pretty good graphics considering the fact that it's pretty old and that it is on the PS2.
The hit detection is, honestly, shit. The number of times that I have died because of it, and it's either that or I just have bad eye coordination but overall it's a pretty easy problem to deal with.
The difficulty of the game is also astounding, the first time you fight a new wyvern you WILL die, ALOT. It gets frustrating and sometimes you just want to quit, but eventually you will look back and laugh when you fight it again and kill it within 10 minutes.
Speaking of which I forgot to mention the game gives you a time limit for each quest. Some of the harder quests give you much more time to complete them. Sometimes in fact, you can be fighting a wyvern and have only died once only to have the timer hit 0:00. Please note that most quests give you about 55 minutes and you can take your time with them.
There is also a problem with not being able to pause the game. What do I mean by that? I mean you can't, at all. Pressing pause only brings up he option screen.
Another thing I forgot to mention is detailing the types of weapons there are in the game. You can switch from Bowguns, Great swords, Lances, Hammers, Sword and Shield. However you can only bring ONE into a quest. Melee weapons also dull after a while... which decreases their power and can cause your attacks to bounce off so you need to carry ALOT of whetstones to sharpen them. NOTE: guns use bullets not whetstones.
There WAS an online mode to the game, but sadly the company that supported the server went out of business and Capcom would have to have spent ALOT of money to continue so they axed it. This is sad news, but not a big enough reason not to pick up the game.
Not much else to say really, this game is awesome, lengthy, and totally worth whatever you spend on it. Some of you may also be wondering why I rated the game a 5.00 with all the problems I mentioned. Well I gave it that score simply because this game is FUN.
