THE GOOD:Looks like a Pixar Movie
Large variety of weapons
Clank levels are an improvement from previous games
The best of the Ratchet and Clank games so far
THE BAD:
Spaceship battle levels can be frustrating when getting the skill points/gold bolt
Gold bolts can only buy skins
An ageing structure
SUMMARY:
Without spoiling too much, the main aim of this game is to stop Emperor Percival Tachyon, a Cragmite, and the dictator of the Polaris Galaxy. Along the way you will also run into Space Pirates and other enemies. Entering a new Galaxy, the weapons are no longer supplied by Gagetron, Megacorp or Pox Industries, but they are now supplied by GrummelNet. The only Gagetron weapon in the game is the standard super-weapon, the R.Y.N.O. This time however, instead of spending ages grinding millions of bolts to buy one, you have to collect 13 Holo-Plans on the various planets, and during the course of the game you will meet a character who can make the R.Y.N.O for you, provided you give him the Holo-Plans of course.
The standard of storyline has improved, and the witty dialogue has got wittier. The visuals are stunning, and whilst newer games look better, for 2007 it is a brilliant visual achievement. The sometimes poor weapon aiming in the PS2 games has vanished for good with a great strafing system that locks onto an enemy if you hold down L2. This game has the best weapons of any Ratchet game. One of my personal favourites is Mr Zurkon, similar to the Synthoids of R&C2 and the Agents of Dread from UYA and SM, this robot is one of the new devices in the game, he will aid you in combat by shooting your enemies for extra damage. Unlike previous versions though, he will shout out funny one-liners at every opportunity. Another of the higlights is the Groovitron, another of the new devices, when thrown out this makes all enemies within range spontaneously dance, which gives you an opportunity to stick some lead/laser into them. Every enemy has a different dance, and even bosses cannot resist the power of the Groove.
The main complaint I had with the game is that there is a large variant in difficulty. In the first ten planets if you have played a ratchet game before there will not be a large challenge. After that, I found that the enemies got twice as hard, and found myself dieing numerous times before beating a planet, which brings me onto my next complaint. There are only a few checkpoints on each planet, so you may find yourself doing the same part of a planet numerous times. For one of the clank levels I found there was not a single checkpoint so I found myself doing the same thing each time I died. My final negative point is that Ratchet and Clank games have been coming out since 2002, and when this game was released there were seven ratchet and clank games, and in essence we have being playing nearly the same game for 7 years. Of course if you love the games this will not be a problem for you.
Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is simply the best Ratchet and Clank game out there at the moment. If you are looking for a 3D platformer then this is definitely your best option.
