THE GOOD:- The graphics and visuals in Resistance: Fall of Man are stunning, to say the very least. It utilizes the PS3s hardware very effectively in this way.
- The sound effects and music featured in the game aren't annoying and don't seem to get old. Everything fits and sounds as you would imagine it to ((other than the sound it makes when you hit corpses. That's just strange)).
- Replay value is quite high for it. There are three original difficulties, and you can unlock a fourth if you beat the hard mode. After beating the game once, you unlock new weapons and some online content. Plus, it keeps track of how many times you've beaten the game; that's a good way to build bragging rights.
THE BAD:
- If you're just picking up this game, expect to be behind by quite a bit in your online gaming. The people there have been playing since the launch of the game and tend to be relentless. You're almost required to play hundreds of unranked games before tapping into the ranked ones, unless you don't care about your rank being extremely low.
SUMMARY:
This game is a phenomenal example of how well the PS3 can perform. Resistance: Fall of Man has so many strong points ranging from the massively expansive levels to boasting NO drops in the frame rate. All in all, it's a very solid game.
If you're not much of an FPS gamer, you'll need to start a campaign on Easy mode if you don't want to put yourself through too much strain. Going through the game once on Easy is more than enough to give you a good feel for the game and should prepare you to jump into the campaign again at a higher difficulty.
Something nice about the campaign is the length, as well. It provides an interesting story that doesn't seem to get old as you're following it, so you don't have to work through a boring or dry game. Half the time, you may find yourself completing a level to see what happens next in the story! Following a normal gamer's pace and playing for an hour or two every night or so, this game can easily give you a week's worth of gameplay in the campaign alone. For players who want more than the kill-or-be-killed aspect of the game, there are skill points you can acquire for doing unique things during the game. For example, you get a skill point for crouching over 15 chimera corpses and another for lighting at least 8 of them on fire within 20 seconds. These are fun goals to work towards if you've already completed the game but missed some of the extras.
The online portion of the game provides some fun of its own. Just as there are skill points you can acquire in the single player game, you can get ribbons and medals to mark your achievements during your online gameplay. However, you may find yourself frustrated if you're a perfectionist as some of the medals require a LOT of time and effort, such as getting 2000 defensive kills. Nevertheless, everything is attainable if you work at it, as you'll find.
Overall, I gave this game a 4/5 because at some times it can be extremely frustrating between difficult campaign levels and uber pwners in online games. However, this does sometimes add to the game as it gives a challenge to work through. It is certainly a game worth picking up.
