Warhawk is an Online only game. There's no offline mode whatsoever. Don't even contemplate buying the game if you're not online with the PS3 as it would be like buying fuel for your bicycle.
When I first started playing Warhawk I wasn't too impressed. The layout is unusual and everything just seemed odd. However for some strange reason the more you play it the more you love it. It's the kind of game that you'd hate if you just play one or two rounds and leave unsatisfied.
There's also an element of luck involved too. If you're unlucky to be playing your first game with an awful team or even worse a team of Team Killers then you're first impression will be a pretty bad one.
Because the game is online only you pretty much get thrown right in the deep end. It may seem overwhelming and confusing but it's pretty straight forward once you get a few games behind you.
You really have to give it a chance. It WILL grow on you.
The Gameplay is simple. You spawn at a set spawn point with a pistol, knife and 2 grenades and what you do after that is entirely up to you.
You can jump into a plane and take to the skies, you can hop into a tank and destroy everyone in your path or you can grab a jeep to get somewhere fast.
Maybe you prefer to defend your teams base. Well you can get into a Missile Turret and take down approaching planes. The possibilities are endless.
Vehicles are everywhere and there's rarely a time where you have to walk very far to get a ride.
Online play is hectic to say the least. With REAL players trying to win, the competition can get quite fierce. There is never a quite moment unless you purposely look for a place to hide.
Graphics are top notch. Everything looks smooth and detailed. Even the maps are far from bland with trees/rocks and debris everywhere.
The gameplay and controls are ace. Planes are extremely easy to get the hang of and within your first game you could be doing aerial acrobats with ease. On foot and in vehicle is just as impressive. Initially it felt unusual and it took a bit of getting used to. Everything is 3rd person view. Whether you're in a Plane, Tank or Warhawk the camera will always be positioned behind you.
Changing weapon is done by pressing the directional buttons. 8 Weapons on foot and 8 in the air.
The sound is outstanding. Bullets whizz past your ear, explosions tremble the camera if you're close, Warhawks flying overhead make that satisfying whoosh sound and overhead Warhawk kills rain debris down on top of you. It's like experiencing real war.
The replay value is excellent too. There are 100s of rewards and collectibles in the form of Medals, Ribbons and Badges. All of which can be received though playing the game till your thumbs bleed.
As for the bad stuff, well unfortunately there is quite a few. Bugs and glitches are common and can sometimes irritate. The ranking system isn't working properly. People Team Killing is still a problem. Communication with the mic is flawed if you're using NAT 3 (like me). There is no lobby, you jump straight into a game.
However updates are due very soon so I suspect those errors to be fixed by then.
Edit: 24/12/07
All the above mention cons have been fixed with a recent update. Rankings now work perfect and all the bugs have been fixed. Team Killers are also rare these days.
Now Warhawk plays like a dream. All in all Warhawk is a very fast pace, high octane, hectic online game. With all the bugs now fixed Warhawk has become the best online game of this Generation. It's a truly outstanding game.
Tired of Resistance? Get this. You won't be disappointed.
