Review - Dissidia : Final Fantasy

First of all, I don't know how to read Japanese, so take this as the thoughts of a non-Japanese player about the game.

Dissidia : Final Fantasy is unlike any other Final Fantasy game. This game is the ultimate FF crossover that links the first 10 FF games. And unlike the other games which are mainly RPGs, this one is a one-on-one fighter. But surprisingly, this, combined with RPG elements, works quite well, and provides quite an enjoyable gaming experience.

When you first load up the game, you are greeted with the start screen which is thankfully in English.

The start screen of Dissidia : Final Fantasy, thankfully in English.

Here, you see a big difference to other games. That is, there is a "DATA INSTALL" option that you probably have never seen in a PSP game before. This is a pretty handy feature that lets you install the game to your Memory Stick to reduce load times. You can select an install size from 200+MB, 300+MB or 500+MB depending on your Memory Stick size.

Once the saved game is loaded, or a new save is created, you will come across the Main Menu which is in Japanese.

Main Menu of Dissidia : Final Fantasy, I knew I should've learned Japanese as a foreign language.

But, this menu is pretty much easy to figure out. The first option is Story Mode, the second option is Quick Battle and the third option is Multiplayer and so on...

The Story Mode functions a bit differently to story modes of other games. In this, there are 11 different interconnecting storylines that can be played seperately. Each character has a storyline. (The Warrior Of Light from Final Fantasy I has 2 storylines if you count the prologue.)

Zidane Tribal from Final Fantasy IX : Go, monkey boy!

Once you pick a character's storyline, you're transported to a board-game like grid. Here, what you're going to do is upto you. You can either battle the minimum number of enemies and rush forward to complete the storyline or take your time beating everyone and improving the strength of your character via special treasure chest icons found around the grid.

Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII : Best hero, IMO.

Quick Battle and Overall Gameplay:

The Quick Battle Menu of Dissidia : Where could you pit Sephiroth against Squall Leonhart if not for Dissidia?

Once you select Quick Battle, you can pit any of your favourite heroes/villains against each other. You can even pit two alternate models of the same character together!
Traditional Final Fantasy RPG elements mean you can customize your character by equipping better accesories etc.

Character customization screen : Sephiroth's already badass! What more could you want?

Pick a map and AI difficulty, and you're good to go.

The battle system is pretty cool and innovative. It's like no other fighting game. The two characters in battle spawn in close range of each other in a wide map. Both characters have 3 meters. A health bar, a BRAVE meter, and an EX bar.

The attacking system is what is really innovative. The circle button can be used to perform combos which will deplete the enemy's BRAVE meter and fill up the player's meter. The amount of BRAVE points you have is the amount of damage you can dish out to your opponent. Hit the enemy with some combos and you will be prompted to press X. If you press X in the split second provided, a slow motion attack will be initiated. With proper timing, you can chain together such attacks to deplete the enemy's BRAVE meter to 0. This will put him/her into a BRAVE BREAK stage in which the player's points will skyrocket while the opponent cannot cause any damage at all.

Slow motion attack : You show 'em Sephy!

But you gotta be really careful because your opponent can do the same thing to you. But once again, you can press X with proper timing to dodge a slow motion attack from your opponent.

A slow motion attack initiated by the opponent : Uh, oh... Squall's on a rampage!

A great way to stay alive and win a battle is to make sure that your BRAVE points don't go down to zero. Because you going into a BRAVE BREAK is a massive advantage to your opponent.

Result of letting yourself fall into a BRAVE BREAK : Sephiroth's supposed to be the uber-villain! I don't understand how Squall could beat him! :3

Even platforming elements have been added to the game. You can run along basically any wall like some kind of a freaky superhero. It may sound bad when put that way, but it's really cool. Just press triangle at a wall and you're on!

Wall running : Dear Sephiroth, please make sure your cloak doesn't fall off. We don't want any fangirls fainting.

Graphics and Sound :

Played Crisis Core? Then you know what Square Enix can offer on the PSP. You could say this game has even better graphics than Crisis Core. At least Sephiroth's design is much better up close, IMO.

More in-game graphics : What are you waiting for, idiot? Give me your best shot!

The game features music tracks themed after all previous games. And the music somehow suits the battles. Though I still think the character selection screen music track is the best.

Unlockables :

Throughout the game, you gather points known as PP and money in the standard currency GIL. You can use these to unlock certain things. Even the villains are unlocked for quick battle via the shop menu.

Unlockable villains : Sephiroth better not be a waste of 500 PP!

Finally, all I can say is : This game is great. I just can't wait for the English release!
