SUMMARY:
Spyro the Dragon was released to North America on August 31, 1998. It was one of the very first games I was ever able to play on my playstation back when I was only a little kid. Spyro the Dragon was such a thrilling and adventurous game I would play it almost every day for hours on end. This game was definitely worth the time I spent on it even if it took me not only many hours of on and off game play but almost 9 years to complete it! Spending many years away from my playstation just allowed me to realize how much fun I had with it before. Just like in the past, I had one heck of a time playing this game once again!
The story of Spyro the Dragon begins with Spyro and his fellow dragons living at harmony and peace in their worlds. But this definitely couldn’t last because for one fateful day the monstrous Gnasty Gnorc broke spells apon the dragons turning them all into crystal! Now it’s up to Spyro to save the day! He must rescue his dragon fellows and put an end to the notorious Gnasty Gnorc!
Spyro begins his journey where it all started, in his once peaceful homeland of the Artisans. In time he can move onto five other areas apart the one he started in. These include, in order of appearance, the lands of the Peace Keepers, the majestic world of the Magic Crafters, the shadowy region of the Beast Makers, the wishful kingdom of the Dream Weavers, and the most chilling of them all, the realm of Gnasty Gnorc! Within each of these unsearched areas lies several worlds that Spyro can discover! He can spend his time in these worlds in any way he chooses whether he may want to search for jewels, dragon eggs, or his dragon fellows whatever it may be it’s all up to Spyro in this adventure!
Each area from Spyro’s homeland to Gnasty Gnorc’s realm looks incredibly well done in the sense of graphics. Every world and area looks very detailed, well thought out, and luring to any explorer. In each of the worlds there are several things that will or won’t catch your eye. Most worlds have many parts that hold jewels and dragon lives that are hard to see to the average human eye. If your going to be a true successor of the game Spyro the Dragon you must keep your eyes open. I speak from experience you must make sure to gaze around any worlds you are visiting for the first time for crystallized dragons, jewels, and dragon eggs or there is a chance they won’t be found. Other parts of a world that are quite noticeable to any human eye is the world’s pleasant surroundings such as temples, castles, woodlands, platforms, hills, mountains, lava pools, ponds, and lakes. Each of these things that appear in a worlds environment help to make the game more exciting and thrilling for the player playing.
One thing that can definitely keep you going when playing Spyro the Dragon is the different types of music heard throughout each of the areas and worlds. Not only did the music make each area and the worlds in them much more pleasant the music also kept players calm and relaxed whenever they weren’t finding the dragons or jewels that they desperately needed. I definitely enjoyed the music that was heard throughout the game it surprising wasn’t annoying like music can be for many other games played on the playstation system.
Any average hardcore gamer can spend countless hours playing Spyro the Dragon. This is probably because of the specific goals Spyro must accomplish in order for him to meet and distroy Gnasty Gnorc and also complete the game. There are a total of 80 dragon fellows that Spyro must rescue, he must also recover all of the stolen dragon eggs from the evil foes in blue, and he must collect up to 12,000 of the lost dragon jewels! All of these items can be discovered throughout the areas and worlds in the game you will just need to keep your eyes open and search long and hard for what you must find! It definitely took me a lot of times to find every single thing that Spyro needed to recover but the time was well spent with an even greater reward in the end.
One thing I really disliked about the game Spyro the Dragon was that some worlds became incredibly hard to complete. Trying to find certain crystallized dragons and jewels became an intolerable task that didn’t seem accomplishable. Anyone who is new to this game will definitely have a few troubles, I cannot lie. I definitely had to analyze each and every difficult situation I came in contact with just to make an attempt at completing a world.
Another thing I greatly disliked about Spyro the Dragon was that when a dragon you had just rescued from crystallization would try and give you a tip about something in the game they were always about two steps behind rather then two steps a head of Spyro. Meaning that the tips they gave should have been given minutes before where Spyro had reached in the game. For example in one part of the game Spyro would be kissed by a magic fairy who gave him special dragon breath that allowed him to burn through steel well after the gamer would figure out about Spyro’s new dragon breath when he would go to rescue a dragon the dragon’s tip would be to breath fire on steel after being kissed by a fairy. This definitely made the tip that the dragon gave quite useless. It truly frustrated me to receive awfully overdue tips like those from some of the dragons Spyro saved.
Spyro will have to fight thousands of evil gnasty minions created by Gnasty Gnorc himself. But there are a few cool things that Spyro is able to do when defeating his foes. He can charge them with great speed and knock them dead! Or he can breath his hot flames of death in front of any enemy that gets in his way. Spyro may also come across hills that allow him to gain super speed and fly to new heights or he can choose to glide for minutes on end throughout the narrow platform lands of scary worlds. Whatever you choose for Spyro to do you will always be having fun just watching him in his ferocious action!
All in all, with both the good and bad mentioned Spyro the Dragon turns out to be an excellent game for any playstation gamer. I would recommend this game for anyone who is interested in a nice adventure that can at times boggle your mind but also warm your heart. Anyone who is interested in dragons will definitely enjoy this game! In my own opinion Spyro the Dragon definitely out matched plenty other play station games of it’s time and will continue to do so! So, only if your willing, will you be the next gamer to take a glide with Spyro sometime?
