THE GOOD: Beautifully rendered backdrops, frightening atmospheric noises, challenging gameplay. THE BAD: Frequent backtracking. SUMMARY: The Alone in the Dark series was the first to break the mold of the Survival Horror genre, and it shows. The fourth installment, The New Nightmare, takes the thrill of playing a horror game and beats you over the head with it until you want to cry. This is a great game for people who love to have to occasionally put their controller down because their hands are shaking. Alone in the Dark has great backgrounds that mesh perfectly with the music, sound effects and atmosphere. Gameplay is a bit erratic, but it makes up for that with a brilliant plot and challenging puzzles. Combat is balanced with problem solving, and the enemy monsters are a mix of classical and outlandish. And if the strange noises in the background don't creep you out sufficiently, they've thrown in plenty of cheap scares to make you jump. This game is a must-have for the first slot of any Playstation video game library. |

THE GOOD: Graphics, sound, characters, storyline...everything!!!THE BAD: Nothing SUMMARY: This game is both exciting and fun.
PERFECT! 5 out of 5!!!
Fantastic graphics and sounds are blended together to make a recipe for the greatest game I have ever played! The storyline is one of the best I have ever seen and it just sends a shiver down your spine. You tingle with anticipation wondering what is around the next corner. Friend or foe? There is such a great variety of items and armery to choose from that is hidden in various places around the games location. Finding them and finding your way provide4s a good chanlenge with in the game and it really makes you realise the perils of being 'Alone In The Dark'!

THE GOOD: The storyline, the illumination system, the walkie-talkie use, and the cameras and scenariosTHE BAD: The monsters´design could be better, they are more funny than scary, except the scorpions and the bosses SUMMARY: I recommend this game to everyone who calls itself a gamer, and likes adventure games. The two different scenarios add lot of playability: if you like story and puzzles, play as Aline Cedrac, but if you like blood, action and shots, play as Edward Carnby. |

THE GOOD: Light switches, miles of corridors, cool guns and darkness.THE BAD: after playing through with Carnby I was little dissapointed not to recieve any in-game cheats for my next play through. However that doesnt hurt this games abit. SUMMARY: Horror fans, dont miss this one, its a beauty. Anyone who likes a good mystery and doesnt mind a little fright should give this a try. theres something very sweet and satisfing about this game... Its the first game ive played in a while that really justified its price. |

| Well, this game is quite great, i guess ...... Because I don't really like the graphics..... actually I like the background graphics, but the graphics for the moving things like the character that we're using, the objects that in our inventory, and many more !! But the things I like about this game is that we can use the torchlight and the weapons are quite great!!But, I think it's still need some work ........... |

Now that I've finished the game with Carnby and the initial excitement has died down, I can write a fuller review of this game.
First the good: The music and sound effects are excellent, you have the spooky, eerie effects as in Resident Evil, but some really dark and menacing music with a lot of bass guitar as in Silent Hill, both go together well. As for the sound effects, well let's just say that on more than one occasion, a piercing human scream or the blood-curdling roar of a nearby demon really does shit you up! Next the graphics, backgrounds are nice as you'd expect, I wouldn't say that they are better or worse than those of R.Evil 3, just the same. The torch is nice, but due to the Playstation's limitations and the fact that the ojects onscreen are'nt 3D they don't cast real time shadows, but it's not a problem really. Characters and monsters are fine, if alittle blocky, but then all graphics on the PS don't look as sharp now that the PS2 is out. Storyline is great, it has a real air of mystery which keeps you in the dark (!) throughout the game, infact once you play this to the end you'll find it's more adult a game than Silent Hill was, I'll say moreon the story later. If you've played any survival horror game before then you know what to expect from the controls.
Now the bad: Bugs. Towards the end of the game I ran into quite a few and even thought they don't spoil the gameplay, they are obvious. For example near the end you have to lift yourself up a step and then down again on the other side, I found a point where you could climb down INTO the rock and walk around half in the scenary half out of it! But apart from that I only have one other thing which is worth mentioning in this bad section, and it contains slight spoilers, nothing to do with the storyline directly...this game has one of the most disapointing endings ever. The final boss is nothing compared to some of the things seen in the Res. Evil games, infact, I didn't even know it was the final boss it was that bad. The whole storyline seems to just die during the last hour or so and it really sticks in your mind after the rest of the game is so good. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy the game, I'd say it is better than any other survival horror game out there it just gets let down by the poor last hour. 4.5 up to the last hour. 2.0 for the last hour.

THE GOOD: Scariest game ever!(After only twenty minutes of play)THE BAD: Some of the voice-overs slightly cheesy (Although far, far better than any of the Resident Evils!) SUMMARY: So I bought the game on the day of it's release, that being the 18th May over in the UK. Hoorah! we get a game before America! I've only played twenty minutes of it so far but I just had to stop to write this. After only twenty minutes I can say it's better than any Resident Evil game out there! We have blood, rain, extremely spooky music and sound effects, a great torch light thingy, much better voice overs than the other survival horrors, and what seems to be a far better storyline than the "Whole place has been turned into zombies" routine. I'm scoring this a 4.5/5 after only a short amount of time, so you know it's gonna be a 5 by the time I've played it through. Well worth the wait! |
