SUMMARY:
Chrono Trigger was, without a doubt, the best game of its time and continues to remain a classic hit which can be found in the library of any hardcore RPG fan. But you don't even have to be into RPGs to like this game. Its overall playability, awesome storyline, and the New Game + feature is enough to motivate anyone to play this game through and enjoy it.

In this day of high quality 256-bit graphics, it might be easy to get turned off by this game's graphics. However, in the 3 years that I've owned this game, I've enjoyed the graphics despite eye candy like Final Fantasy X and Xenosaga: Episode I around. They're very colorful and captivating, which makes the overall gaming experience all the more enjoyable.

The music is great, in my opinion. Battle music is fast and upbeat, and I found myself humming it constantly because it would get stuck in my head a lot. Outside of battle, the music fits the environment and brough out the aura, whether lighthearted or dark and gloomy.

The battle system is nothing new, but is very enjoyable regardless. In battle, every character had a gauge. When the gauge fills, the character gets a turn to execute any action they please. Depending on whether you set the battle option to "Active" or "Wait," your enemeies may or may not attack you while you choose an action. Levels are gained traditionally through the EXP system. Your characters also learn new techs, or special atttacks, inlcuding magic, when they get enough tech points. Double and Triple techs are an awesome part of the battle system. Several of these can be learned. Basically, two or more characters in the same party can combine techs to use a special, more powerful attack. Overall, the battle system was fun and enjoyable.

The storyline of this game was better through most. At the beginning, the characters accidently stumble across a time portal. Soon afterwards, the scientifical genius, Lucca, invents a "Gate Key," allowing the characters to use this time portal freely. They discover several more as the game progresses, and travel through time to change history as they learn of their ultimate quest to save the world. It may sound cheesy as you read this, but it's very complex and original, and there's several twists, which are all too good to spoil. Along the way, you meet several new and interesting characters that join you in your quest.

The final thing I enjoyed was the fact that the game was long and fun to play. Nearing the end of the game, there were several hours of sidequests for you to undertake to get unique items, accesories, and the character's ultimate weapons.

Even nowadays with all the new RPGs with enhanced graphics, this game remains high on my list. I've still seen only a few games that can compare to this one.
