At the time, these graphics were the best you could ask for. It rivals many, many games on the PSX.
The story is absoultely gripping, interesting from the first CODEC call to the last. Humor, Love, Tragedy and Drama are rolled up into one huge cinema.
Characters are richly diverse, each carries his or her own unique personality, faults, trademarks, talents in battle, whether it be a boss or a comrade.
Speaking of the Bosses, you face FOX-HOUND units in this game, in some of the best boss battles I have ever experienced in my life. Your confrontations against Sniper Wolf, Metal Gear Rex, Vulcan Raven and Liquid Snake among the notables will leave pleasure in your heart forver.
The music is extremely gripping, each song suits it's environment. Low, depressing music for Mantis's tragic plight, high-paced for most of the boss battles. A musical triumph!
Endings are excellent.
THE BAD:
NO FPS! I am writing this in 2005, over 7 years after the game was first released, but I don't care! The lack of FPS make this a truly difficult game if you're not dedicated enough to see it through completion! If you have a GameCube, get Twin Snakes, you'll thank yourself later. If you have a PS2 only, such as I, then tough it out! You'll get there eventually!
Mei Ling can be annoying at times, with those stupid chinest proverbs.
SUMMARY: The nuclear weapons disposal facility on Shadow Moses island in Alaska's Fox Archipelago is attacked and captured by Next Generation Special Forces led by members of FOX-HOUND. The terrorists have secured hundreds of nuclear warheads and they're demanding that the government turn over the remains of Big Boss. They warn that is their demands are not met within 24 hours, they'll launch a nuclear weapon. Solid Snake is once again called back to duty in a top-secret mission to deal with the greatest terrorists threat the world has ever seen. First, he must single-handedly infiltrate the nuclear weapons disposal site and rescue two hostages, DARPA Chief Donald Anderson and the President of ArmsTech, Kenneth Baker, and then eliminate the terrorists threat and prevent a nuclear launch. The clock is ticking. Once again, Snake heads into battle...alone.
A game such as Metal Gear Solid comes once in a lifetime. In my entire career, I've never played such an enthralling game that demands every single whim of your attention such as this one. It demands that you beat the game. It wants it, it feels it. For someone who has already tried and conquered Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, that's saying a lot. I just felt the need to complete the trilogy, as a MGS fan I promised myself I wouldn't give up. This game can be insanely hard if you're not careful, I was playing on Normal Mode. Easy may be easier for the weakling, but I assure you anyone who has played Normal in 2 or 3 should be able to have no problems in the original. Don't be afraid of filling the story. In my case, I found it loads more interesting than Metal Gear Solid 2. MGS2 did bore me at times, especially in the Plant stage. MGS kept me listening from start to end, with full-attention. The things that happen are going to shock you, even if you already know them from events in future installments. The story is perfect, no flaws at all.
The music, though it repeats for Boss Battles, you'll never get sick of it, I assure you. The music has a very uncanny way of fitting the environment it serves, and that's what makes it so harmonious. What else..the characters are insane. Some actually are. COUGH Liquid COUGH, anyway, the characters, good and bad will certainly leave an impression on you. You feel sorry for Psycho Mantis and Sniper Wolf, you feel like Vulcan Raven is your "friend", in a battlish kind of way, Liquid Snake is cursed to hell.
In conclusion, if you have not played this, go do it. Especially if you've done the other two. You will not regret it.
