Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is a very clever game that sends you off on a journey to save your fellow alien looking slaves from lifelong misery. You are Abe, a funny looking green guy who has to solve puzzles, outrun multiple different guards and simultaneously speak to your people so that they follow you to freedom.
GAMEPLAY 8/10
The controls in Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee are relatively simple to get used to and include to usual actions such as run, jump, crouch etc. The real breakthrough here is the ability to use several character voice commands such as ''Hello, Wait, Follow Me'' etc which you will need to use as you try to help your fellow mudokons out of harms way and to freedom. The gameplay consists of you navigating Abe through multiple levels filled with traps, enemies, objectives and puzzles that need to be solved in order for you to be able to advance. Throughout each level you will find numerous mudokons that you need to rescue in order to complete the game.
GRAPHICS 9/10
The graphics are very well done and much attention has been paid to the details in the backgrounds. The levels are lush with colors and give a very mystical and often magical looking appearance. The characters are nicely designed and look very unique overall. Truthfully there is not much that one can find fault with in this regard.
CAMERA 8/10
The camera is stationary from a fixed 2D perspective but feels comfortable since the entire game is set in 2D anyway. Depending on your position on the screen you might find yourself in the foreground or in the background which adds depth to the overall experience.
SFX and FMV's 10/10
The SFX are very cool in the sense that the developers paid attention to the most minute details including footsteps, creature sounds and most notably in your ability to control your characters dialogue in order to communicate with your fellow slave Mudokons. The FMV's are also incredibly well thought out and executed. The animation is beautifully rendered and the graphics lush in every aspect. This category is perfect.
REPLAY VALUE 7/10
Sadly the replay value is not that high due to the fact that once you've beaten the game it is likely that you do not want to go through the arduous task of doing all that hard work again. Mind you, the game is extremely fun and challenging but for most folks one time through will be enough. There are also no side games so the story mode is all there is. However, you may find yourself picking up the game again months later to attempt another trip through the mayhem.
OVERALL 9/10
All in all I rate Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee a 9 mainly because it is so worth going through the entire game even though it might only be one time. The game is highly challenging at times but overall it is filled with fun and the elements that comprise the entire game are all top tier. I would recommend buying the game since a rental period may not be enough time to beat the entire game but that is just my view. I bought it and I never regretted the purchase.
THE GOOD: This game has wicked graphics, The backgrounds are great, the concept is fun. Its nearly good enough to kill for!
THE BAD: Nearly! The game is very Hard! I found that the second Oddworld game was easier than the first.
SUMMARY: Well, it goes a bit like this. You're this ugly fella called Abe. Youre job is to save youre fellow friends (Mudukuns) The bad guys (Glukkons, Sligs) are going to make you into FOOD! So this is all explained in the starting movie, You try to save you friends while ducking bullets, dodging bombs, and chanting into the others! Pretty simple. HUH!!!!!!!!!!!!
