THE GOOD:Another awesome adventure with Mario, in which you have to save Princess Peach...again...
Ride through the game with a great companion: Yoshi. He will become an invaluable part of your team.
Plenty of levels to get through, including secret levels, which means you will be entertained for quite a while.
The controls are simple so that any person can instantly pick up the controller and play.
The replay value is awesome. You can play through this game again and again without getting bored.
THE BAD:
I didn't find anything completely bad with the game, though it is a bit easy.
SUMMARY:
Intro
Welcome to my review of Super Mario World for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System!
In this game, you play as Mario as he gets through many worlds to get back Princess Peach, who was kidnapped by, you guessed it, Bowser. As you start your adventure, you come across a little dinosaur by the name of Yoshi, who agrees to help you on your quest. Together you two embark on a quest to save Princess Peach and restore order to the Kingdom. And so the journey begins...
Sound
Well it isn't really an important factor in my case, but I figured I should write about it anyway.
The music is great and classic, just like you'd expect from a Mario game. Though sometimes it gets a bit redundant, it's easy on the ears and is not distracting, like some games. The sound is also just as great and clear, with nice effects for stomping Koopas or Sky Bombing the ground. Though it's a bit kiddish, it's awesome.
Graphics
Even today, I think the graphics are crisp and beautiful for a SNES game. It has a variety of colors, that of which are not blinding to the eyes. Well maybe a little bit, or I think it's just me.
Each level has all kinds of designs and patterns in either the background, the level itself, or both. The enemies themselves are well designed with matching colors, as well as Mario himself. Even the World Map is completely well designed, which shows that the developers put hard work into the graphics department.
Controls
The controls are nice, responsive, and really simple, which means you can immediately pick up and play the game without much worry as to which button does what, which is what I like about this game. You won't have to worry about accidentally falling over the cliff or in the lava anymore, because Mario immediately stops as soon as you stop pressing the directional button. The controls are also simple when you are riding atop Yoshi.
Gameplay Aspects
Now here is the important part of any game.
Yoshi
When you first start the game, you'll meet up with a little dino named Yoshi, who was trapped within an egg by a spell casted by Bowser. Since you freed him from his prison, he agrees to help you in your journey to rescue Princess Peach.
Yoshi makes a great companion, for he can swallow most enemies, as well as take a hit for you, though you'll have to run after him or he'll disappear. There are also berries that he can eat that'll make him lay eggs, which contain many different items, like a Mushroom or a coin-giving cloud.
Not only that, but there are also special Yoshis that can be unlocked once you find them. Now the normal one is green, and doesn't have any special powers, but the special ones have colors that correspond to their power. The red one can spit flames to get rid of any enemies close by, the yellow one can create sand clouds by stomping, which also damage nearby enemies, and the blue one can fly, which can be useful for certain situations. But in order for them to use this power, they must consume a Koopa first.
Items
Mario can't complete his mission without some power-ups, I'm sure everyone knows that.
I hope.
Anyway, all the old items have returned, as well as some new ones. You still have the Mushrooms, Fire Flowers and Stars, but now instead of the Raccoon thingy, you now have the Feather.
With the Feather, you can fly, as well as a few extra things. You can float in the sky to get a few extra coins or just to avoid the enemies below, or you can do a Sky Dive and pound the ground below, which causes an earthquake that renders all enemies unconscious.
Now there's blocks that have many different purposes. One you can hit and then be able to go through it, another can extend from one block to five blocks, and more. There's also special colored blocks that you must unlock first to have as advantages for certain levels.
That's pretty much all there is about items.
Worlds and Levels
Of course, Mario has to travel through many worlds and levels to reach his final destination. The level designs were stepped up since the last game, with more detail included in each, and there are a LOT of levels to go through. You travel through normal levels, ghost houses, underwater levels, and a whole lot more, and at the end of each are field goals and you earn points for touching the rising/descending meter. The higher the meter, the higher the points and when you collect 100 points, then you get to go to a bonus stage in which you collect 1-ups. Also there are an abundance of secret levels to travel to, and they count as part of your game completion as well. With the sheer amount of levels and worlds in the game, you'll be entertained for a long while.
Final Thoughts
This game was truly a great game for its time, with all the levels to beat and such. You could even play with a friend if you wanted. Overall this game was awesome and definitely deserves the score I gave it. Even now I would recommend buying this game.
