Notice: Gears of War for the PC has extra campaign game-play that is not available in Gears of War for the 360. The only reason I said that you might want to pass on this is for its gore. Don't be deterred, Gears of War is sweet.
Today's games are no strangers to violence. GTA, for the longest time, has been the game series that gets squeamish politicians up in arms about violent video games destroying childhoods and increasing violent behavior. It's not surprising when the game series gives you the option of beating someone over the head with a baseball bat just because they owe your computerized employer a bit of cash. Games, however can rarely keep a trend of greatness, or in this case brutal violence, for that long. Gears of War easily dethrones GTA in the violence department, but is a well rounded game that should not be ignored, just because of a little bit of head smashing.
Gears of War, although it looks like a future earth, takes place on the planet Sera(feel free to correct me on the spelling, it's never spelled on the box or in the manual). Gears of War's art style works off of the concept that Epic Games calls "Destroyed Beauty", meaning that what was once a beautiful planet, inhabited by humans, is now a disgusting grub hole infested by hostile, half-bug, half-human invaders. Along the course of the campaign, Delta Squad moves past beautifully rendered monuments, city-halls, and mansions. There is only one Flaw in Gears of War's otherwise perfect graphics. The game has almost a lack of color. At some points, especially in the multiplayer, there isn't too much of a contrast between colors used. You can fix this by tweaking with the brightness on your TV. Despite this, Gears of war really delivers in the graphics department and no one should steer clear of this game for one minor nit pick in a game that otherwise looks perfect.
The graphics in Gears of War quench a fan's thirst for blood, and you need to be a fan of blood to enjoy this game. Where as in most games, if you kill someone with a shotgun, the victim either undergoes a death animation or flies half the way across the map like a rag doll. Gears of war implements a third and more gory way to die. If you shoot someone with a shotgun in Gears of War, they explode and end up as tiny bits of meat scattered across the battleground. That's not all, Gears of war has many more ways of reducing you enemy to a bloody pulp. The player even has the option to cut people in half with a chainsaw that's attached to the end of a rifle. Players who love violence in video games have no excuse for not getting this game, but If you prefer video games with lovable pink bunnies, or your parents forbid you from playing violent games, stay away.
Gears of War's single player is memorable, but not the greatest in gaming history. If the game relied on story alone, it would be a shallow game. You play as Markus Fenix, your typical battle hardened veteran with a past. Your job is to fight of bug people called Locusts with Delta Squad at your command. The main point of the story line is that locusts are bad and there's not much more to it than that. The main bad guy is a locust who's only noticeable difference to other locusts is that he is about an inch taller than average. He only kills one person throughout the entire game. His name is never said throughout the entire game and needs to be looked up if you want to know it. General Raam, as the internet calls him, is a half step away from becoming a minor character. Luckily, the campaign's game-play makes up for its average, action movie type of storyline. The Locust Horde that you fight usually consists of about five or six baddies at a time, leaving the player to say "Horde!? What horde?". Never underestimate, however, the skill of those five or six. They enemy AI in Gears of War is phenomenal. Epic Games has managed to create some of the best AI in gaming history. One more problem in Gears of War is that it's short, but its shortness is made up for in its awesomeness. What campaign game-play there is, is some of the most exciting game-play out there. Perhaps Epic Games' best accomplishment is the fact that there are NO LOADING SCREENS IN THE ENTIRE GAME! Gears of War shouldn't be bought for the single player alone, but the campaign is exceptional, and should not be missed.
The controls are another part of gears of war that is near perfect. Epic Games did a great job at simplifying squad commands, and its a good thing because your teammates are as dumb as a rock. Without commanding your squad correctly, the will get wounded, forcing you to risk safety to go and heal them. If you don't heal them in time, they will die and you will be starting at the games last saved checkpoint. The squad command system is good enough to be able to ignore your AI partners' stupidity, and it's simple enough to feel like second nature. The whole system only occupies three buttons. At first, one may feel that the A button has too many functions. It controls the games sprint system, as well as the cover system. After playing for an hour, however, the A button is easily tamed. For a company that started making games for the PC, Epic games did a great job of making accessible controls for the Xbox 360.
Through its Unreal tournament series, Epic Games knows multiplayer. One big difference between the multiplayer in Unreal Tournament and the multiplayer in Gears of War is that you won't be able to get the 30 person matches that are seen in Unreal Tournament. The most people you will be able to get in a game at one time is eight, but don't let that discourage you. Gears of War's multiplayer is outstanding. The game delivers multiple modes of game-play, but many of them feel the same with some subtle changes. Epic Games scores again when it comes to downloadable content. Epic has released multiple new maps and even a new game-play mode via Xbox Live Marketplace. What's even better about the downloadable content is that it's free, and after a five minute install time, you have more maps to mutilate your friends within. One issue with a game is longevity in the multiplayer. Many fun games eventually have no one playing online. There is no such issue here. At Gears of Wars release in 2006, it became the game to get, and everyone who owned an Xbox 360 owned Gears of War. People still play this, and I don't mean about 5 or six, I mean that Epic Games still has thousands of blood crazed minions to cater to their every whim. A game, however, is not made by how many people play it, but Gears of War is still great.
One more noticeable multiplayer feature is that you can take the single player online and play with a friend over Xbox live. This is where the campaign mode really shines. The game can be amazingly challenging on the "Hardcore" and "Insane" difficulty settings, and coop is the only way to have a chance at beating them. And starting these matches couldn't be easier you can either start a public or private match, or go into match making and join a game that someone else is already hosting over Xbox Live. Moreover, joining these matches couldn't be anymore seamless. People can join in the middle of the level without having to reset the game and wait in a lobby. Gears of Wars multiplayer opens up a new realm of possibilities.
Gears of War is now one of the older games that are out for the Xbox 360, but it has aged like fine wine. Now, drawing ever nearer to Gears of War 2's release, Epic Games promises better graphics, more on screen enemies, enhanced AI and more weapons to destroy with. More importantly, Gears of War 2 promises an ending to the cliff hanger left by Gears of War. You will most likely need to experience the first game's campaign to fully enjoy the second's. It's not to late to experience this first iteration in the series. The only reason someone should pass on this game is for its blood and gore. If you pass on it for that reason, however, be mindful that you are missing out. There is no better time to buy Gears of War. |

THE GOOD: Realistic graphics which push the 360 all the way. The cover system is outstanding and very simple to get to grips with. Voice acting is decent along with some nice sound effects. Interesting revival techniques Fun Online play with little lagTHE BAD:
The third person view (over the shoulder) may not suit all gamers. The story is quite short. Only 8 people can be in online matches meaning it may not be as intense. Tactical thinking is required which again may put off some players. Not many weapons to choose from.SUMMARY: When Gears of War hit the scene in November 2006, it took the gaming world by storm. Its innovative cover system won many fans around the globe and it quickly nailed itself down as a Xbox 360 classic. Though the market is dominated by Shoot 'em ups, Gears of War bought something new to the table. The intense fights you find yourself in while playing in the campaign bring a smile to your face and Epic Games have certainly struck gold with this little number.
When you load up Gears of War, you instantly think to yourself it's going to be just another gory shooter with a mediocre storyline and a few explosions thrown into the mix in the small hope you'll still be excited by them. However, you couldn't be more wrong. As soon as you jump into the campaign you instantly recognise that you're playing a very special game. From day one you are thrown in at the deep end with enemies closing in on you. Instantly you have no choice but to dive for cover, which instantly shows Gears of War's greatest feature. In one quick tap of A, you're safely behind cover, ready to take out anything stupid enough to run into you. With a quick jerk of the analogue stick and another tap of A, you dive forward as your previous piece of cover is blasted to a million tiny pieces. This is what makes Gears of War so refreshing and fulfilling. It's so simple but it plays such a key role in Gears of War. Without it, you'd be in a lot of trouble. When in cover you are able to blindfire which is useful when there's a large amount of enemies about or you can pop out and start attacking, providing a lot more accuracy in your shots. But don't start to think Gears of War is just about shooting from the safety of a large piece of rock, far from it actually. Like any other Shooter, Gears of War includes some tasty up close action to give you more to gnaw on. Armed with a menacing Chainsaw, you are able to slice through enemies, making mincemeat of them. This provides a lot of laughs and a bit of variety into the games concept meaning if you do get bored of hiding, there's still the classic option of running in there and hoping for the best. Sadly, the majority of the time, that doesn't work and Gears of War requires you to use your brain in a lot more crafty way. The way you use the cover system can give you one hell of an advantage or one hell of a disadvantage. Sometimes, staying in one place and taking pot shots at the enemy works like a charm but other times, moving about the battlefield, diving for cover and popping out, releasing your magazine at some poor enemy is a better way to go about things. It all depends on the situation. Sometimes you'll die but that's what makes Gears of War so fun.
Teamwork is essential. So is finding some cover. Gears of War's A.I is pretty intelligent. You're allies won't all just charge in getting themselves killed leaving the rest up to you to clean up. No, they'll hang back if an enemy looks to be a bit too strong and they'll use the cover just as much as you will. It's pretty fun watching them finish off the enemies while you grab a quick beer but they aren't invincible. This brings us nicely onto the darker subject of death. When an ally dies, you are still able to bring him back into the fight by running over to him and hitting A, he'll be revived and will be back in the fight. The same goes for co-op and online play, if your friend was too die, you're able to run over to him and revive him. Sadly, if you've been caught out and you are killed in solo play, then your allies won't be there to help you and you'll find yourself starting from the nearest checkpoint, and those are few and far between so dying really isn't an option.
But what exactly is the point of Gears of War? You're Marcus Fenix, fresh from the prisons and your humanities last hope of salvation from the evil of the Locust. It's a classic and sadly it's not got too much variety. Let's just say, it's exactly what you'd expect but every now and again, something will pop up that'll make you sit up and take note. The games campaign can be played by yourself or with a friend. Obviously, playing with a friend is a lot easier but playing Solo is certainly a lot more rewarding. The enemies are not necessarily hard (on any difficulty) but without some common sense and have your wits about you, you'll find yourself dead before you can say "This game is actually the greatest game of all time. Gimmie more!". As with most games, you'll come across the bosses but they themselves are also not terribly hard to finish off, it's just about being patient and hitting them where it hurts - literally. Gears of War also throws in a bit of puzzle work for you to work out. One part in the campaign sees yourself trying to make your way across a street however; the trick is you must always be walking in a lighted area. Again, this small little inclusion just adds so much to Gears of War's variety and fun factor. But, the campaign feels slightly short and towards the end, a bit rushed. It could probably be wrapped up in a good few days and the fact it is so short means you feel cheated as it was so good. It's a shame but like they say, all good things must come to an end.
The Locust are bent on destruction and you're assigned the job to stop them. Luckily, the campaign is only half the story. Make your way online and that's where the fun really lies. Gears of War prides itself on a fun multiplayer and with some very fun maps to play on, it can become quite addicting. Epic Games have also released 2 map packs for Gears of War, which are now free, so the fun can continue. Multiplayer, like campaign, focuses a lot on the tactical side of things so the best bet is to hang back for a bit. Games consist of 4 against 4 which seems slightly small at first but the maps aren't huge so you're never too far away from the action. Never the less, it does lose that intense heat of the moment feeling which gets the heart pumping. The variety of weapons you have isn't too great either. You basically have an arsenal ranging from a shotgun, a sniper, a few machine guns and a pistol to choose from. The lack of weapons can be a blessing in disguise as it'll rely more on skill rather than stupidly powerful weapons but as you can guess, most players will make a dash for the nearest sniper and jump camp with it.
Gears of War's maps have been given so much detail. A game such as Gears of War doesn't come about often at all and it has set a new standard in video games. No longer can we expect to see cheap, tacky shooters anymore when they have to rival Gears of War. It truly is a remarkable game; it really is like a breath of fresh air. But, do I smell hints of Timesplitters? Whatever the answer, you need this game as soon as possible. |

Gears of War: Epic Wins | 4.9 0 comments |
by iamjoe56 from kansas city, KS, USA | Mar 21, 2008 |
THE GOOD: The Graphics are incredible. Only surpassed by the Likes of COD4 and Bioshock.
Game play is immensely fun and addictive. I am on my 3rd straight play through.
Co-op is intense, and fun and is just plain awesome.
The game has a freaking Chainsaw Bayonet, what else you want!?
THE BAD: Very little.
Sometimes the characters refuse to take cover and all you do is Jump forward into cover. This can lead to horrible deaths, bouts of cussing and general anger. Though these are few and extremely far between.
Sometimes your Teammates make Brash decisions, like running into an Exploding arrow, or charging a turret.
lastly, if you are not an experienced gamer, the controls can feel, awkward for a time
SUMMARY: Gears of War has to be one of the Best games in Existence. it gives you visuals never surpassed until three years later, by titles like Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock. It has one of the simplest and most useful cover systems in gaming. Using only one button, which simplifies things greatly.
The sound design is full, rich, and riveting. you will be hard pressed to find a aural experience so tantalizing as this. From grunts, groans and screams of Locust and Gears alike, it is all there. All full of detail, and tone and Definition. Nowhere is this more evident than in the enemies known as "wretches".
This small creature screams, but with the sound design in this game, it can give you a headache. The pitch is perfect, tones and Nuances give it an Ethereal level of sound that has your ears ringing instantly and keeps you hearing it for ten minutes.
This same rich detail carries over into the sounds of battle, and even the sounds in the environment. you can hear the floor boards creaking, unseen Cockroaches and rats skittering behind walls, and the creek of old, broken and blasted houses in the dead of night.
The guns sound full and real, at a distance they have a muffled quality which lends perfectly to the Incredible Aural tapestry that Epic has Woven. grenades have a big, sharp blast with a throaty after wave of sound and a rumble as it reverberates off walls and out of alley ways.
But, Sounds are nothing without the visuals to compliment them. Once again, Epic has delivered a feast of truly awesome Proportions. From the grimy posters from before E-day, to the dust ushering forth from Bullets striking the walls, ground, bushes, anything.
The texturing is amazing and animations are some of the most fluid and believable I have seen. The Camera placement adds to the experience. Never robbing you of a kill, never making it hard to see, not once will it become a hindrance.
In the end, this all comes together in a nearly Flawless package, leaving you wanting more, even after you have beaten it. And with a robust multiplayer mode that never gets old, you'll be coming back for months.
But, single player is an Important part of any game. In this very important category, Gears of War does not fail. While the story is simplistic and shallow. You are given enough information to make sense of it all. But story is never everything in a game. What about the game play? In Gears, it is godly. The truly easy to use Cover system makes fore fights survivable, but just barely. This is due to the games killer AI. The AI uses cover, blind fires, uses grenades and flank you. On the lower difficulties it takes more direct out in the open approaches, usually ending up in there demise. However, on Hardcore, and later Insane the AI becomes dangerous. Using cover and waiting until you are reloading to charge you. It uses grenades to astounding effect, flanking and rushing are both used to terrifying effect. The end result being intense firefights, with bodies dropping all around, grenades exploding in your face and in some truly unfortunate happenings, exploding on you.
But none of this chaos and wanton destruction can happen without weaponry, right? Gears of War once again delivers. Keeping things simple with the Standard Machine guns, turrets, grenades and Shotguns and Sniper rifles. But things have been changed up a bit. For one, the Chainsaw Bayonet has to be the most fun to use Melee tactic in a game. It also produces a gory experience that is both thrilling, and at times, can make you sick with Adrenalin. Another non-standard weapon is the Hammer of dawn, basically a giant laser pointer with a twist. It calls down a orange beam of doom from the heavens, level Locust ground troops in pieces and larger locust reeling in pain. Finally the Torque Bow. This weapon has to be the most evil in the game, firing an Explosive arrow, that can embed itself within an enemy, it has a truly satisfying after effect.
So in the end, Gears Of War is a truly satisfying game. Combining Superb visual and Aural components with weapons that may not break the mold, but are just damn fun to use and AI that makes fire fights feel fresh each time, never doing the same thing twice. Epic has created a Master piece. I just wish I had gotten it earlier.

Gears of War - Almost Perfect Gore | 4.5 0 comments |
by Zephyr from dumb ass land, , fag | Sep 6, 2007 |
THE GOOD: Gears of War or GOW is an amazingly entertaining and addictive game for the XBOX360. The storyline is great, a sci-fi/war plot, and with that there comes plenty of action. The graphics are top notch and the third person perspective/view makes for some intense action. Weapon choice is similar to Halo, not too many different things to add to your arsenal, but more than enough diverse ones to fit any given situation. Of course, XBL [XBOX Live] for this is incredible. The multiplayer death matches are ingenious to this title, and never get boring. And the audio isn't fuzzy, so no more turning up the volume just to hear the voices. THE BAD: All that good, how can there be any bad? Well there are two things that ruin this game, or just make it boring if you get involved with either. Hackers/Glitchers... really gets old trying to shoot someone who glitches and does the "back flip/hover" glitch to get to a really high spot. Then a sniper is all you need to finish a round. And of course both of those things are found in almost every online/XBL game, and even though it gets annoying the game is still amazing. SUMMARY: Overall GOW gets a solid 4.5 on Neo and in my opinion. It's a great game that you should really check out, unless you are a bit squeamish when there are mass loads of gore and body chunks flying around. I have never really been bothered by glitchers since most are extremely hard to pull off when there is a shot gun breathing down your throat. I guess it all depends on how you plan on playing.
Some things that are really annoying though -
Laggers - Whether it be on purpose or just a bad connection they are extremely annoying. I boot them out of my matches because it isn't fair to miss getting sniped all the time because your "connection" is bad, or you are doing it on purpose to win unfairly.
And the most annoying thing ever - Lancer squads. One on one against a Lancer you can easily win. Since they aren't the best guns in the game they are fairly underused. However, when there are two or more [ideally three] in a squad of Lancers it gets rather annoying because they can down you really fast and continue to do that until you just die. Or even worse is when a snotty player downs you a couple times with his Lancer and his buddies, then leaves and waits for some random player to come along and kill you off.
Now less about the gameplay itself and more about the game and it's story. You start off as a guy named Markus [with a kick ass attitude] inside of a Locust Prison. You gather up some members of your "squad" like Dom, and begin actually fighting to destroy the Locust army. You play through chapters of the main story that'll have you on the edge of your seats. The game itself is more diverse than just a 3rd person shooter, there will be times when you'll need to use commands to group your squad and give them orders for battle. You also have opportunities to use turrets and other large weaponry throughout the game. And of course you can't forget the part where you must drive the vehicle with the spot light on the roof, through the ravaged city while trying to keep the Krill from devouring you and your partners.
Like I mentioned before somewhere in this long review, this game has great graphics. Some of the best I have ever seen on any console. What really amazes me is the fact that there is no lag or glitching when you complete rapid 360 degree spins. The game kind of blurs the environment out so it gives you a more realistic feel of spinning in circles.
Last but not least is the impressive audio of GOW. The sound isn't something I pay much attention too as long as the game is good, but now I might start to think about that again. GOW has absolutely no fuzzy sounds or laggin voices even under heavy stress in the game [facing hordes of Locust and spinning in those famous circles]. It really helps when trying to actually listen to the story not to hear that kshhhhhhh sound in the background [because let's face it, the 360 makes enough noise as it is while running].
In conclusion, this game takes Microsoft's Favorite console to a whole new level of gameplay and expectation. Shooters will never really be the same on the 360 if Microsoft and their affiliates can continue to produce spectacular games like Gears of War in the future. Looking forward to a GOW2... PAYCE ~
Graphics - 5/5 Amazing and not glitchy, PS3 ain't got anything on this.
Sound - 4.5/5 Clear, crisp and perfect for poppin' some heads.
gameplay - 4.5/5 Good story and multiplayer is phenomenal.
Overall - 4.5/5 great game and really worth that 50 or so dollars to pick up.

GOW Sets The Standards. | 4.7 0 comments |
by Dance Floor Killah from Knox-Vegas, TN, USA | Jul 14, 2007 |
THE GOOD: Absolutely gorgeous graphics, very lively, detailed environments that capture the destructive beauty of Gears of War, multiplayer fun that keeps you awake and your heart racing for that sweet action, weapons are very creative, not a hero game; you get support from three other guys or just one at certain duet moments, easy interface with the environments, gory but still friendly enough with a majority of people, futuristic look and feel, the game challenges you as you raise the difficulty level/experience level, General RAAM and Berserker are actual ENEMIES and not just pansies, rewards for many different things in the game.THE BAD: Storyline is a bit chopped up. How come you can't be a woman? That should be included! A.I. sometimes screws up a little too bad, especially making obvious mistakes that make no sense at all. Otherwise the game is extensively great. SUMMARY: Ahhh... Gears of War. The first game I ever bought along with a brand new premium X360. I blame my cousin for getting me hooked, especially when he invited me to play as a guest on GOW [sorry to anyone who lost their match because I sucked].
The graphics on GOW are absolutely stunningly gorgeous, no questions asked. Sometimes the mesh layer pops up when the system doesn't load things fast enough, but other than that, everything looks real.
The gameplay is simplified and addresses one problem with a lot of first-person shooters: cover. On GOW, you only have to press one button and you're protected. Then if you stay in cover, just by moving the left control stick, there's a variety of ways to move around, staying in cover or rolling out.
GOW also has a nice array of various weapons you can use to grind your way through the game. The best part I would say, is using the Lancer with a chainsaw attached to slice your enemies in to pieces. Or you could use the torquebow to blow an enemy apart. It's your choice, and you can carry two main weapons, a pistol, and grenades.
The problems of GOW? The storyline is a bit choppy and not so full, but any player could instantly catch up with it.
Even though the A.I. is very well done, sometimes, you just want to punch dumbass-Dom for running in front of troikas, or other friendlies walking right up to the enemy and getting beat down.
But overall, Gears of War is definitely a keeper and something you should buy. I'd say that anyone who is interested into shooters or alien-like games would probably love playing this because I know I sure do and many, many other folks do too. |

Gears of War | 4.8 0 comments |
by think of something from , , | Feb 27, 2007 |
The increasingly big developer Epic has finally brought us this piece of pure 3rd Person Shooter heaven to the Xbox 360 entitled Gears of War.
The amazing complicated game yet amazingly simple controls really shine through for the experience of the game, since it branches off what your doing, take blind fire for example, shooting a enemy with much of your body hidden, sounds a bit hard, but can be accomplished easily, by tapping A to stand next to a Wall, shuffling to the side of the wall a pressing the shoot button, simple indeed.
The Weapons in this game arent like many shooters, it's not full of an arsenal spread over the game, like Call of Duty for example, but Gears of Wars' weapons are simple yet used to great affect, like sniper, their may only be one, but it can lead to a very nice, yet gory headshot. Now as soon as you see Gears of War, you'll probably think "Chainsaw Bayonet? Great!" but it's not as simple as just running up to an enemy, revving your saw and cutting strait through one, if you get shot, you will have no choice but to lower it, even though this makes many people frustrated, I believe it's a great logic, I mean the game would get boring if you could just saw anyone.
Now A.I, well you play against a Dino-type creature called Locust meaning 'Infestation', these creatures have risen up through Emergence Holes, and are really set around the difficulty you choose at the beginning of the game, if you choose casual, their tactics are very much like running at the enemy hoping to kill you, which can be easily controlled and finished of with a quick saw or some shells from the shotgun. On Hardcore, they don't run at you as much, but they hide more, which can get a bit annoying as they are harder to shoot, but it makes the game much harder and takes more time. On insane its much like Casual, they run at you a lot, but hiding a lot on the way, and seeing as they can finish you off with a quick beat down of the shotgun, it makes the game quite tricky.
Co-op I think is extremely over rated in this game like in many others, this may be my own opinion, but I notice there is no change in the difficulty when playing with someone, which I believe is wrong, the game should be harder if you have 2 people playing its basic logic, and levels for a good gaming experience.
The story isnt as good as you think as you think. It's very clich which looses some of the feel of Gears of War, 'Unstoppable enemies come up from the ground, humans get backed into a corner, humans make their last stand.' so as I said it's very, very clich. Plus the dialogue is incredibly cheesy, like it's from a bad War movies or something, you hear lines such as "Now I'm pissed" and "How much can they take?" which sort of blends in with the game, but is sometimes off putting.
Online mode in amazing, one of the top high lights of the game, you'll hear a lot of people complain about how many people can play, but in the end, it's really based around that with the weapon set ups and the map sizes, I mean, I couldn't see about 16 inside a small map with only a few weapons, I just really don't see why people complain.
All in all, Gears of War is an excellent game and a definite buy for the 360 if you have one. Bring on Gears of War 2. |

GoW - Ready, set, CHAINSAW! | 4.5 0 comments |
by Chronic Apathy
| Feb 11, 2007 |
Gears of War is the highly anticipated third person shooter for Xbox 360 from Epic Games. It features some of the best graphics, sound, and gameplay on any game on any console to date. But did it live up to all the hype? Did it live up to what Epic promised it would? Did it deserve the numerous "Game of the Year" awards? Yes, yes, and yes. It delivered everything Epic promised and much, much more. In this review you'll find out what really makes this one of (if not the) best next-gen game out today.
The gameplay in this game is, with all due respect, the best I personally have ever seen. The cover system works excellently, providing cover to leap to at almost any point during the game. The AI in this game was excellent, the enemies and allies use the same set of controls and physics to combat each other. There's not much of a difference between Campaign and versus mode due to this, which in my opinion is an extremely good thing. Online co-op is an extremely nice touch, allowing you and a friend to beat the entire game on any difficulty.
The two complaints I have are simple: Because running, rolling, and leaping into cover have the same button, it's sometimes hard to retreat when necessary, as you're constantly slamming into walls as opposed to getting the hell out of there. The second complaint is the character models for the CoG and Locust teams are almost the same, which means you sometimes find yourself shooting at your teammates, and sometimes you ignore the enemy. However, despite these flaws, versus is still extremely fun.
The graphics were a bit hard to give a score to, mostly because half of them work extremely well, and the other half look a bit tacky. The half that's done poorly is the characters themselves. They often look (dare-I-say-it) shiny and unrealistic, really taking away from the value of cutscenes. The rest of the game however, is unbelievable. The vistas, buildings, and scenery are amazingly good. Epic wanted to give off the impression that the planet of Sera has been nearly destroyed, and they pulled that off very, very well.
The audio in this game is superb. Gunshots hitting metal, wood, and flesh is extremely well done, as is the shouts to flank the enemy, or regroup. The main complaint is voice acting in cutscenes seems to be a bit off. They pause in the middle of sentences for no real reason, and they don't seem to get into the character much. This problem isn't during gameplay however. The stress of battle really comes alive when you hear a teammate cry out to be revived. The Locust voices match their personality perfectly. Scratchy and scary, exactly what you'd expect.
The controls in this game are simple, and for the most part revolve around the "A" button, which allows you to jump over cover, jump into cover, and roll from one piece of cover into another. The "A" button also allows you to roll, and by holding it in, to "roady run". This is one of the first games of its kind to get use from the "D Pad". By hitting a direction, you select a different weapon to equip. Other than that, the controls are consistent with a classic FPS (First Person Shooter), "R" is fire, "B" is melee, and "L" is aim.
This game has the most replayibility of any game....ever (in my opinion). Online co-op with the most fun multiplayer of any game I've ever played allows for a fun experience. Throw in a lot of multiplayer maps for variability, along with the option to swap weapon spawns in offline means there's thousands of different ways to play versus.
Overall this game is a masterpiece. It took Epic nearly three years to perfect it, and when you play, you can tell that they working every second of those three years. The main drawbacks are the strong language and gore, which some adults might find "sick" and therefore wouldn't play it. But as the hardcore veterans of the game will tell you, this game just isn't complete without them. For those of you that are delaying buying this game because of those reasons, you can be happy that you can switch them off, allowing for a better experience.
Gameplay - 4.5/5 Graphics - 3.5/5 Audio - 4/5 Controls - 4.5/5 Replayibility - 5/5 Overall - 4.5/5 |

A gorgeous, fun shooter | 4.3 0 comments |

THE GOOD: - The best graphics seen in any game so far - Easy controls - Nice storyline - The levels ooze with quality - Excellent multiplayer - superb co-op - amazingly little lag online
THE BAD: - Short campaign - Some people spoil online mode - Needs some balancing - only eight people online modes SUMMARY: Gears of war, the biggest game to hit 360 last year, the hype has been tremendous, so does it live up to it? In short, yes.
As expected the graphics are absolutley gorgeous, arguably better than any other game on any system currently on sale. So the graphics rock, but waht about the gameplay? multiplayer? story?
GOW is a third person Sci-fi shooter, with an element of sqaud based action. It is set not too far in the future, the evil locust are trying to take over earth and the human race is on the brink of destruction. You control Marcus, a battle hardened soldier who has been taken from jail to rejoin the desperate fight. The main objective is to wipe out the locust threat with your sqaud faced against massive odds. The game sees you in many different situations, and the levels have an excellent variety to them, with amazing detail and quality. In each level you usually need to travel to a certain point, gunning locusts as you go, which isn't as simple as it sounds. Locust are intelligent, tough and mean creatures. They come in a variety of types, the drone is the average soldier, usualy armed with a semi automatic gun, they are rather tough but their aim is a bit off. But you will encounter much bigger stronger enemies than drones, such as theron guard, extremely skilled enemies that take even more shots than you! As you would expect each enemy has its weaknesses, drones are easily taken from a distance, while theron guard can be shotgunned easily enough etc. The weapons are very nice to, although there are not many of them as one might like. However, each one takes many hours to master.
Gears of war doesn't have an entirely original form of gameplay, but theres some interesting ideas in there. The basic strategy is cover and shoot. Taking cover is absolutely essential since characters die fairly fast on this game, but if you quickly hide or take cover while your health is low you will rergenerate. Takinfg cover is context sensetive, meaning that it uses a button (A) to do things other than taking cover. I would say taking cover is more useful in single player than multiplayer, although you will still use it online it can be a hindrance at times, especially if someone tries to flank you with shotgun, as you will not have time to leave the cover and survive the attack. You can blind fire when behind cover, this is fairly inaccurate with the machinegun, but if used on close-up-enemies with the shotgun it can be devastating. The reload system is pretty cool, its based on timing, you press the RB button to begin the reload animation, and a bar appears with a grey line going across it, when you press RB it stops the grey line, if it stops on the dark part of the bar then you get a bad reload, if stopped on the white part of the bar (Harder to get on than the grey) then you get a fast reload, if stopped on the glowing part you get a damage bonus as well as fast reload.
My complaint with campaign is how short it is, I went on hardcore first time and finished it in under five hours. So you definitely don't get your moneys worth from the campaign, so hows the multi player? Its brilliant at times, and absolutely frustrating on other occasions. The weapons are in need of balance, as some people can forget about having fun and just try and win, there are three easy ways to do this that involve little skill, firstly grenade tagging, this is when a player melee attacks while holding a grenade, this sticks the grenade to the enemy and kills them in seconds when the grenade detonates. Surprisingly this is possible over about an eight feet distance, making it very hard to counter. Secondly the primary machine gun (the lancer) has a chainsaw attached, this can be revved up and used as a melee weapon, but again it has a longer range than it should, and if you touch an opponent with it then instantly a mini cut scene initiates showing you getting sawed in half, while doing this the chain sawer is invulnerable to all fire. Lastly the hammer of dawn is another cheap weapon, when used it calls down a massive beam of death from satellites in the sky, killing any opponents in one second, if it touches them. The hammer can be directed around the players view for about 5 seconds, making it an easy way of racking up kills. Apart from this the multi player is excellent, although it could do with some more options.
Overall Gears is an absolute must have for any gamer with Xbox live, for anyone else they should consider their purchase carefully. |

A pretty good game, not forever though.(campaign review) | 4.0 0 comments |

THE GOOD: - Cover mechanics work very well in this game. - Chainsaw bayounet is a blast to use. - Addicting gameplay for some time. - New features of health and reloading. - Berseeker fights are a blast. - best graphics of any game yet.THE BAD: - story is uneventful and seems like if the creators didn't put effort into it. - diologue is pure stupid at times. - they try to make something different but fail with the horrendous UV turrent part. - The 2 bosses are way to easy. - Gets lame after the storied fall down. SUMMARY: Positive: Concept- pretty much you're a tough guy called Marcus Fenix(or Santiago in co-op.) Locust Horde have almost taken over the world, now you're suppose to kill them..shoot them, shoot until they're all dead, it's really enjoyable.
Gameplay- cover/ shoot mechanics of these game are one of a kind. It's even more fun in co-op, as you and your buddy are helping each other out, and going to different paths to complete the mission. You could reload in a completely different way than on other games, you have to press the bumper of the control twice, once so that the dash line starts moving, and second to stop it, if you stop it right in the white line, you have a perfect reload. It allows you to reload faster and get back to the action. You should really give the chainsaw a try as well, get near your enemy and hold B and cut off heads!
Graphics- the textures and effects in this game are also very attracting. The smoke and explosion visuals are somethings to behold. The raining effects are so realistic, this game's graphics are the best. Sound- the music in the background while fighting is pretty good, other than that..ererr...
Entertainment- the first times through you won't even want to put the controller down! It's addicting for a while and you'll spend HOURS playing it through. Enemies/ health system- This Health System is much better than other games, if you get hit, A skull outline will start forming, if you get hit too much, the skull will complete and you'll die. The good thing is that you could actually recover very fast form a bad health condition. You just have to cover and let the outline of the skull go away! Drones and Locust are a blast to play with, they also use guns and are smart.
Now, this is NOT the best game ever(as you could tell by my 4.0 score) Here's the negatives-
Concept- Now, the story of this game is kinda wierd as well. The Loust Horde coming and not stopping with killing might be a bit dumb for all I'm saying. It never really goes anywhere.
Gameplay- The cover Mechanics thrills don't last forever, after a while you won't be as in to it as you were when you first started playing this campaign. Also there's times when you have to stop and walk SO slow because you're speaking to your adviser(whcih is annoying)
Graphics- No flaws really. Sound- A lot of the lines of this game are very bad, especially the ones that the characters say to each other. One character called Cole says a lot of useless things that also make you walk slow when you're talking by your walky talky.
Entertainment- Like I've said, the thrills in this game don't last for too long. The game is short but too long for its own good, after the resonator bummer, the game effortlessly creates another event that makes you play more..It sadly effects the gameplay near the end, the game gets somewhat-lame. But, I have to say that not all of the cons effect it too much- It's a good game but I'm afraid to say it's widely overated.

Halo What? | 5.0 0 comments |
by Darknet from Indiana, , USA | Dec 6, 2006 |
I and a buddy are playing co-op together in a mansion. My partner gets caught from behind and knocked out by a Locust. I run to my friend in order to try and revive him but the Locust who just took him out guards his helpless body. While stuck trying to kill this Locust, two more Locust come up from behind and surround me. At that point, my only option was to get my friend back up or die. The Locust that stood between me and my buddy started to reload his weapon and that was my only chance. I revved up my chainsaw and dashed toward the Locust, screaming, ready to cut the son of a bitch in half until I see him reload his gun and fire at me. Who lives and who dies?
For many shooters, there are different factors that make them good. Some has multiple factors and some having only one, such factors being intense moments, fun game play, strategy, or just being pure awesome. Gears of Wars has all of these rolled into one game that no casual or hardcore gamer should miss.
The game is about a man by the name of Marcus Fenix: a rough badass soldier who is in prison because he defied orders and attempted to rescue his father. After failing to change do so, Marcus is sent to prison for forty years...at least until the Locust attacked. Now Marcus is called back to arms against and brought back into a slowly failing war with against the evil Locust. While the story doesnt sound all that great and epic from reading this review, the entire story is epic, well told, and able to compete with any game out there. I can say that this story is able to compete with stories such as Halo or any other epic game.
The gameplay is far different from any other shooter with the cover and shoot system. While there are some games with this feature such as Perfect Dark Zero or kill.switch, Gears of War is far more superior and great. In fact, it is so great that you can expect this type of shooting to be copied for years to come. While taking cover in a shooter is somewhat odd in the video game world, the gameplay of it is able to make Gears of War rise above nearly all other shooters. With this new type of gameplay, the emphasis on strategy, teamwork, and well thought out plans is critical to success. For the first time I can honestly say there is a shooter game out there that makes you think.
One of the great things about this game is the ability to create intense situations, like the one I said in the beginning of this review. Many times you'll find yourself desperate, frantic, and feeling like you're in a real war. I could have sworn I felt like I was in a real war. This is thanks to the advanced A.I. in the game. The games A.I., whether friend or foe, is the best Ive seen for a shooter and one of the best Ive seen for any game. The enemy will react to flanking change and or other strategic moves you take. On top of that, your friends are somewhat helpful. Though they do get killed and do stupid things once in a while it is still a pretty damn good A.I. for such a game.
Then there is the thing that will keep this game going for years to come: the multiplayer. While playing, I and my team actually talked about what our strategy should be. We actually talked about what our attack should be in a shooter online match! That has never happened before! Though the online is for only eight people and has only three online modes, the multiplayer is never lacking. The multiplayer is built to create a great emphasis on trying to survive. While other multiplayer games say Oh, if you die youll respawn. No problem. Gears of War brings a great emphasis on staying alive and killing your opponent. That, by far, makes Gears of War great alone.
No matter how you see it, Gears of War is the new Grand Theft Auto. Its an awesome game that will be copied throughout the rest of video game history. Its fast, its new, add and its fun as hell. Gears of War is a must buy and is well worth buying the 360 alone. Be sure to get Gears of War as soon as possible!
