SUMMARY: If you took Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and made it 10x better, this would be the result.
The Good
Graphics:
The graphics are fantastic; Character movements are fluid, light reflects off cars and there's plenty of neat explosion effects. The character models are well-defined, and actually look solid; it's hard not to imagine working organs under the skins. Each character has his own unique hair style, facial expression and clothes.
The explosion effects are truly magnificent; You'll spend hours blowing up cars just to see what happens.
Sound:
The radio stations offer some nice rap music, and some catchy rock tunes. The weapons actually sound 'powerful'; When you fire a shotgun, you can almost feel the force behind it (and so will your target, when they're launched backwards).
There's lots of "thwack", "crash" and "wallop" sounds too; Pistol whipping an enemy results in an extremely satisfying "smack!" followed by an "aaaagh" from your target.
One problem with the sound is that it seems to fade in and out sometimes; I'll be driving through the street, and the sound'll suddenly cut out, then re-appear seconds later.
Another problem is that your character doesn't seem to have a voice; He doesn't speak often in the cut-scenes, and the most you'll hear from him will be "aaaagh" when he's getting shot.
Longevity:
There's plenty of Activites to get your teeth into. There's Insurance Fraud (throwing yourself infront of traffic to rack up points), Drug Trafficking (protecting a dealer as he drives through the city selling drugs to customers), Snatch (Rescuing hoes from their abusive pimps), Mayhem (causing as much damage as you can within the time limit) and Chopshop (finding rare cars and delivering them back to the warehouse) to name a few.
There's also 30+ story missions, all of which are interesting and fun.
Much like Grand Theft Auto's "Hidden Package" system, there's 60 CDs to find. For each 10 you find, you unlock a new song to listen to as you take over the streets of Stilwater.
Storyline:
Sadly, the storyline's rather predictable; You're in a gang, take over the streets, earn respect etc. There's not much to say about this. I suppose the storyline is well-suited to the game, though.
The Bad
Framerate problems:
When there's a few explosions happening on screen and a few enemies running around, one of Saint's Row's important flaws starts to show.
The framerate will slow down considerably, and you'll feel like you're running through treacle; it's like being stuck in Bullet Time. Fortunately, the slow down will only last for a few seconds, but it's a pain when it does occur.
General Information
:
Much like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, there's a Respect meter. You build up respect by participating in side missions, called Activites. All of the Activites are extremely enjoyable, and completing them earns you some fantastic rewards. For example, completing all of the Snatch Missions earns you the Pimp Cane, which can also be used as an extremely powerful shotgun. Completing Insurance Fraud can unlock "Safety First", which is an ability that decreases the damage inflicted from explosions.
If you gain enough respect, you can recruit more gang members. Unlike San Andreas, the members will be a huge help to you throughout the missions. They know when to take cover, they can steal vehicles and they're good shots. It's like rolling with a version of the A-Team, without the receding hairlines and a look of "We're doing this for the money".
If you're a fan of the GTA series, you must get this game.
