SUMMARY:
Classic Tetris is back! It is hard to believe that such a simple game could be improved. Even though Tetris is built on a simple concept, it is very entertaining, and becomes more challenging as one improves. Tetris Worlds offers six variations of the classic game, so, if you ever become bored with playing classic Tetris, there are five other modes to ease your discontent.
Even though Tetris focuses on game play instead of graphics, the graphics in Tetris Worlds are quite nice. Improvements lie not in the blocks, but in the special effects and the backgrounds, which change as the player reaches new ranks. There is also a cute, little, cubical character, called a Mino, that reacts to the game play. Moreover, the Mino is fully customizable, with additional features being unlocked as the player progresses through the game. The sound effects in the game are done well. The most notable of which is the whispering female voice that informs you of game statistics during play.
If you like the sounds of techno, then this game will suit you, but for those of us that are not, the music is an utter annoyance. Tetris is a game that requires extreme concentration, the techno tends to break that concentration, and give one a headache from the constant pounding of the beat, or the mind shattering noise, which is constantly repeated. Perhaps the developers of this game could have put in the old tunes from the Nintendo version, such as Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the other Russian tunes. Those tunes fit the puzzle-like atmosphere of the game, and seemed to aid the concentration of the player. Aside from the techno, another minor detriment comes to mind, sometimes the pieces are hard to see, but this may be more a matter of ambient lighting in the room, or minor adjustments to the television. Or it could be the fact that I am blind as a bat, and wear Coke bottles for glasses. In any case, this is only a minor defect and should not turn anybody away from such a fun game.
So, if you ever want to unwind after a long, hard day of work or school, and just want to veg-out, Tetris Worlds is the way to do it. And for those of whom the Nintendo raised, and who grew up in the '80s, this should make you feel nostalgic, and remind you of the carefree days of childhood.
